I'm just an Army grunt, but I have very close to the same 5 core weapons. Only difference is my go-to AR is chambered in .308 and the reason I went that route is being a remote mountain dweller, with more big critter threat than 2 legged threat and rolling solo, I want my primary weapon to pack a heavier punch at a better range than 5.56 offers. That being said if I were urban/suburban with more potential people threats in much closer ranges, I would deff be going for the 5.56 as my primary fighting weapon. Evaluate your environment/threats/needs and adjust accordingly.

How much 308 can you carry compared to 556?
@darkgardener9577
@darkgardener9577 2 жыл бұрын
@Brooklyn Boi Good thing I don't think that. If you read what I posted you'll see that I think for being alone in mountainous terrain where longer range engagements are more likely the 308 is a better option than the 5.56/223 and for suburban/urban the 5.56 is where it's at. I would rather have a squad of joes myself, but for personal security out here in the mountains of nowhereville that would be well beyond my budget.

I would always add a decent air rifle, particularly a pump type that does not require c02 cartridges. You can keep tens of thousands of bb's for almost no cost and be able to hunt lots of small game anywhere without making nearly any sound at all.
@guardiandevil3

I 100% agree and I'm looking for an air rifle that's good for it myself. The biggest thing I've run into is the bigger ones with CO2 can take out anything, the smaller pump ones can take out small game and the compact one's won't do anything. The added weight and bulk of the big and mid one's can be negated by a .22 lr rifle so it's just the best option in my book. Plus with a henry AR 7 they take up no space.

Good video. No nonsense. That's pretty much the same advice I give to every "new" person I meet. Don't get a gun you don't need, or that has exotic ammo, and don't start modifying it before you learn to shoot it well just the way it came from the factory. Like others have said, a .22LR or Mag revolver is the only other on my list. They're great for teaching people how to shoot.

I found out from having to evacuate during Hurricane Florence that weight and concealment are a premium. In emergency disaster areas there are also, restrictions to carry that make it difficult to comply with the letter of the law versus protecting your family. We evacuated by boat with the Coast Guard flying above us. I was able to grab my BOB and a bag of food with my wife and kids carrying duffel bags with bare minimum clothes. The Northeast Cape Fear went 9' above our front yard and stayed up for over 14 days. We evacuated to my parents house about a mile from us but, were completely cut off from town due to flooding. We were surrounded by water for two weeks and running low on food. We ate out of the food trucks once the water dropped low enough to drive through into town. I developed a nasty staff infection from fire ant bites while walking in the flood water. I was treated at the emergency hospital tent they had setup in town. The Doctor said I had one of the nastiest infections she had seen as the back of my leg looked like hamburger meat. I share this as something for everyone to think about because it has changed how I prepare if we need to evacuate in the future.

I had plinked around with some 22s in the past but pretty much went right into center fire calibers when I first started to build my collection, but I found a stainless 10/22 takedown model on sale at my local gun shop one day that I absolutely could not pass up for the price. And that thing is an absolute blast to shoot, has helped me acclimate several people to shooting and has more accessories available than you can shake a stick at. Deputy Fatally Shot Off Duty Officer ( WHO IS THE HOME OWNER THE CAR-JACKER AND HOME INVADER CAME TO ) - THE SHERIFF SHOOTS GOOD GUY DEAD !!! Clark County sheriff's Office Jan 29-2022 kzbin.info/www/bejne/npiYmWd_lstlZ9E Vancouver, Clark County, Washington --- On Saturday, January 29, 2022 around 2014 hours police responded to Chevron, 9810 NE 117th Avenue, Vancouver, for an armed robbery that just occurred. The caller reported a 23-24YOA white male reportedly produced a handgun, pointed the firearm at the clerk’s chest and demanded money. The suspect fled the scene in a stolen dark-colored Mercedes passenger car with several hundred dollars. Twelve minutes later, the armed robbery suspect was intercepted by police traveling northbound on I-205. The robbery suspect failed to stop for police and the suspect eluded officer’s apprehension attempts. The robbery suspect eluded officers for several miles and eventually exited I5 toward the City of Battle Ground, Washington where assisting officers successfully deployed spike strips to immobilize the vehicle. The robbery suspect then exited the vehicle and fled on foot to avoid apprehension. As assisting officers established containment, a resident in the Battle Ground area called 911 reporting a lone male, coincidentally matching the description of the robbery suspect, was pounding on their front door asking for assistance because he had just been involved in a collision. The female caller told emergency dispatch her husband was an armed off-duty Vancouver Police Officer and had exited their residence onto the driveway in front of their home in an attempt to detain the suspect for responding officers. The suspect then became aggressive and engaged in a physical fight with the off-duty officer while the female caller was still on the phone with emergency dispatch. The off-duty officer lost control of his firearm and suffered several stab wounds during the struggle with the suspect. The suspect broke free from the struggle and ran toward the officer’s residence which was occupied by the officer’s wife, who was still on the phone with emergency dispatch. The off-duty officer was able to recover his firearm that he lost control of during the struggle then ran after the suspect who was attempting to enter his home while still in possession of the instrument used to stab him. Within seconds of responding law enforcement officers arriving on scene, one Clark County Deputy Sheriff fired several rounds from a rifle striking the off-duty officer. The off-duty officer/homeowner collapsed on his front porch before responding officers were able to determine he was the homeowner and not the alleged robbery suspect. The suspect surrendered to police moments later and was taken into custody without incident. Officers attempted to provide emergency trauma care to the off-duty officer, but they were unable to stabilize him. The deceased off-duty Vancouver Police Officer has been identified as 52YOA Donald Sahota.

I swear it's one of those guns that just never quits on a guy. I will admit to having a 14" 870 as a backup backup in the bedroom closet, but so far I'd rather have the luxury of just an astounding amount of semi auto firepower at my fingertips when there's no time to be fumbling around with a pump. Your video is spot on, with your comments and choices practical. Your comment about the Mossberg safety location relative to the 870’s - I learned that from dad 50 years ago, and glad to see that logicality still applies today (though I love my 870’s!). The G19. the 700, the Mossberg, the 10/22 - all super solid choices!

Totally agree with the selections and caliber/gauge based upon logistics. All reside in my safe except there's 870's in lieu of Mossbergs. The preference for the Mossberg tang safety surprised me coming from a 10/22 advocate. 10/22 safety is forward of the trigger knocked off with the index finger like the 870's, which is just behind the trigger. If I could only have 5. The only other deviation is swapping the 700 for a AR 10/AR 308 solely due to our current political climate...

12 ga. shotties trump all in this regard. As long as you can get primers (or make them) then you can use all sorts of crap as propellant, and use anything and everything as projectiles. Rusty old nuts and bolts, nails, ball bearings, hell-even rock salt! You can use match heads as propellant. Barbecue charcoal and tree stump remover (potassium nitrate) can be used as propellant as well. Reliable primers are the difficult part, but shotguns have EVERYTHING else going for them because when you're all out of ammo and nobody will sell you any (or nobody has any) then you can always improvise!

Pump Action shot guns are by far the most versatile of the guns. Short range to mid range. You can pretty much put anything in projectile wise in the case ranging from salt, bb's, slugs, rubber pellets to incendiary rounds. A round for most situations.

I take a different but similar twist on the handgun. I chose a Glock 23, in .40s&w. With that gun, and a coversion barrel from Wolf, I can now shoot .40 and 9mm depending on what is available. A little more capability in the same sized package. Great video all around!

It is extremely accurate and has never failed to function flawlessly. Presently laser sighted and sporting a 25 round mag; a concession to living in condo. Note: the big capacity mags from Ruger need altering to be reliable. I also have a 1951 Winchester Model 12 loaded with No, 6 birdshot (holds 6 in the tube). Your selection is functionally perfect. I am no Seal but am a gunsmith. I agree with your 5 gun arsenal. If I was the last guy on the planet and could only have one gun it would be a Ruger stainless M77 Mark II all weather in 30-06 with sights. Preferably the model with the skeletonised synthetic stock also known as the canoe paddle. I would want a scope preferably a Leupold 3-9x40 scope. If the scope fails I can remove the scope with a pocket knife and go back to open sights. The Ruger has the least moving parts and all those parts are very robust. The firing pin can be removed with anything that will fit through the hole above the sear on the bolt. Even a piece of beach grass or small twig. The rings are bomb proof as well as being quick detachable in case the scope went out of service. A Leupold 3-9 would allow me to engage game out to 500 yards. My one gun arsenal for wilderness survival. The 30-06 has the power and ammo available that is suitable for small varmints to elephants. The only thing it really needs to prepare it is the rings lapped straight and round. For me I would give it a 2 pound trigger job but it is still very usable as it comes out of the box.

@@Anninukichild For availability, 5.56 is King in the U.S. Virtually every law enforcement agency uses it, as does military and a large number of civilian shooters.

@@flyoverkid55 amen...I was born in 83 but I always heard the old timers either old vets, bikers, or cowboys always had the same story "I used to buy crates of Aks or SKSs for 150-500 bucks" just depending on who the story came from lol...mabey now 5.56 but when I was younger everything was 7.62 before everyone started buying ARs...but Ars and ammo have always been more expensive I'm from a pretty poor state..

One you should add is a multi pump air rifle. They are great for varmints and you can stockpile a lot of ammo dirt cheap.

Bear with me - but a coach length double barrel 12g is a gem. Breaks down into two packable pieces - easy to clean- can shoot virtually any ammo option available - bird/buck/slug - it’s just so versatile and reliable

That is an excellent lineup for hunting and defense in depth. You are smart to consider cost of ammunition and availability. I went slightly different with 7mm Rem Mag, Ruger .556, Ruger 10/22, Henry lever action 45/70, Mossberg 590 Retrograde 12 guage, and Taurus .357 wheel guns (4 inch and 3 inch). I have several 9mms and a 45. My training/operating costs are higher with the 7mm rem mag, 45/70, and .357, but those rounds will do the job with one well placed round.

Honorable mention would be a pcc or AR chambered in 9mm, specifically one that accepts the same mags as your pistol. Magazine and ammo compatibility can really save your ass and your wallet. Great video!

I personally don't see the point in a pcc in 9mm if it's only semi auto. You get more accuracy and or capacity but that is a weak round to carry in a larger platform. What's your intended use? in all sincerity, I'm curious. Nothing but love

@futuremlbplayer10 He gave one of the primary reasons, which is ammunuion affordability. You can get decent quality 9mm for as low as 25 cents a round, whereas decent 556 ammo would cost 3 times as much. Also if your primary weapon (rifle) goes down, you're not sitting there with a bunch of ammo you can't use.

Another consideration is that a PCC makes an effective home defense weapon.

@@faitaccompli5878 This is something a lot of preppers do not think about--redundancy. There is a principle that 2 is 1 and 1 is 0. I have 2 ruger 10/22 rifles and an AR-15 conversion .22lr kit for my AR-15. So if one or more of my .22lr firearms breaks, I still have backups. Otherwise, I have a ton of worthless ammo. I actually think having a 9mm kit for an AR-15 is smart. I didn't even know you could do that...lol
@faitaccompli5878

@@polletpower I agree, I'm partial to 9mm though, it's a very versatile round. If you have a 9mm carbine, 9mm sidearm, and a 9mm backup (ankle or back carry) you're good to go.

Not everyone can afford to be redundant, but two of each is a luxury worth striving for, but I sustain these choices if you can achieve this goal of five guns. The AK-47 would have been a consideration , but ammo availability fluctuates, used to be more plentiful (7.62x39). I still have AK and SKS, just because I bought back when they were cheap. thanks for creating this video and the important work you do. Be prepared.

Unless you're sitting on mountain of 7.62x39 right now pre war. I think that caliber will have to be on the back burner for a couple of years.

Late to the party, but I'll chime in. Reduced my go to's down to 4, about 8 years ago, it was the same 5 you described,, then a friend brought a FN/ FNAR out to the range one day. That thing was MOA all day. Has 20 round round mags, reasonable weight and recoil, fell in love and bought one with the heavy barrel the next day. Great bagging bucks, and a very lethal pig killer. Even one shotted a damn bear trying to tear up my chickens from over a hundred yards. Wound up selling my bolt 30.06, kept the 470 though. Enjoyed the back and forth and the fun you and your brother were having. Keep being you Hoss.

I can narrow it down to 1. A single shot 12 or 20 Guage. There are multiple people who make and sell adapters for both gauges online. Due to their simple nature, single shot shotguns are very easy to maintain and transport. Adaptors come in rimfire, pistol, rifle and can even convert it to a muzzleloader. My H&R 12 gauge can shoot 12 different calibers and all the adapters fit in a shell carrier on the stock. As for accuracy, you can hold a 5 inch pattern at 50 yards, so while not great is good enough to take game or defend yourself. Also shotgun cartridges are the only round that can be reloaded without any equipment.

I’m have 38/357s as a go to. Revolvers and lever actions. I reload and cast ammo so I have enough supplies to load at least 75k rounds. I believe reloading is or perhaps was the key. Since ammo and reloading supplies disappeared at the same time and came back slowly at highly inflated prices I don’t know anymore.
