Now days it would be a quick window smash and grab! Me and a couple friends of mine would always carry are guns in the truck to high school in ‘72-73 so as soon as we got out, we were on are way to dove, quail or duck hunting or the strip pits for target practice. Several folks had them displayed in the rear window gun rack as you stated! Sad days now!

Here in Australia, we can't have a truck gun: 1. We aren't allowed a semi auto; 2. Rifles must be carried in a locked case and only carried directly to or from a range of hunting area; 3. Ammo must be locked in a separate container (not the glove box) 4. If you don't obey the mask mandates and other government edicts you risk losing your longarm licence for not being a "fit and proper person" 5. Longarms are registered so the government knows where to come and take them. Just saying. I hope you value the 2A. Defend it. You are the "light on the hill".

@@garythornbury9793 I used to be the same way but they do make etched reticle scopes that take batteries but work the same as a regular scope without batteries but do light up when turned on which helps in low light and other situations where a standard black reticle is difficult to pick up. With the power off you have the standard black reticle so you get the best of both worlds.

I'm a contractor and a gun builder. I'm very selective about anything that goes in or on my gun. I carry an 11.5 with a rugged shake awake ranging dot on top. I cover it in the truck with "camouflage" and it goes IN and OUT of the truck every morning and evening. It's just another thing that gets loaded in and out every day.

I've carried truck guns (also trunk guns) since as long as I could remember. I have had a Keltec SU-16CA that folds in half to about 25". I've stored it under my seats in my trucks and in the trunk of my cars. Right now, it is in a molle bag hanging from the back of my passenger front seat. I live in CA and never had an issue doing this. It saved me twice in the same night back in 1992 when I was just a few miles from where the LA Riots started. Some gangbangers were approaching me just as I was taking it out in order to drive home. They stopped when they saw me unfold it and drop a 30-round mag in it, then they went the other way. The second was a couple of blocks away when a car blocked the intersection just before the freeway. There were three guys in there. They started pointing at me and walking my way. Even though I was the first car in the lane, I was blocked on either side. I wanted to go straight to get on the freeway. I didn't think they would be able to tell that I was pointing a rifle at them, so I held it up so they could see it from the side. They stopped, but just stood there. I put the barrel out of the window, turned slightly right to go around their vehicle, and barely got by them before getting onto the on ramp. Needless to say, I quit that job and have hated Los Angeles ever since.

Good info! I carry the Glock 20 10mm and I have the TNW aero survival rifle in 10mm. The rifle takes glock magazines. If your thinking it's only a 10mm.... look at the velocities of the Underwood Penetrator rounds thru a 16" rifle barrel. 1 ammo and 2 cohesive platforms because of the magazines!

Hard to break, easy to use, stays zeroed after a fall or in my case after getting jostled around in an MRAP that hit a back laid IED. Used to live out in Montana from 1987 to 1992. We all ran around with the rifle racks mounted on the back window of her pickup trucks. I always kept the 30 odd 6 and a 22 both of them chambered. Back in those days even have to worry about locking your doors.

just in case what? you encounter something you can't solve with a pistol? in which case, you need a rifle, not a pcc. truck guns are an incredibly stupid idea. what is the purpose of leaving the gun in your truck? just take it inside when you get home. pcc are a scam. carry a proper compact or full size pistol, and then have a rifle stowed in your vehicle whenever you leave your house. take the rifle with you into your house.

A pcc isn’t a scam. One of the main reasons of having a long gun in the truck is being able to engage more comfortably at range and most of these calibers are accurate up to 200 yards. Granted storing a gun in your vehicle could be thought of as I’ll advised and variables should be considered before doing so but it could be a viable option.

Shotguns tend to be on the less expensive side while being highly effective. Though their capacity is less, you'll probably end the fight quicker with one. Keep some buckshot for anti-personnel or normal size animals. Keep some slugs on hand in case there are angry bear or vicious Sasquatches around. ;) The slugs can also come in handy for longer range shots.

I just wanted to add that an optic with an etched reticle might be a way to go instead of iron sights since you can still function well without a battery. That will drive your cost up but it’s something to consider.

The primary arms cyclops gen 2 runs about $280, has great clear glass, an etched version of the awesome ACSS reticle which has a bunch of little ranging features that serve double duty as precision holdovers for various close shots (5yd/10yd/15yd all fall on an easily recognizable piece of the reticle), it gets 33k hours of battery life on a setting that’s bright enough to see on a white background with a white light shining on it, yet doesn’t starburst into unusable glare in total darkness. It has auto off/ shake awake, and it fits mini ACOG quick detach mounts such as from ADM. For $300-$400 depending on if you go for the mount or not, it’s a phenomenal bargain, and I sometimes find myself putting it on my “nice” rifles because I just really really love it. That said, I always run a fixed front sight and a rear sight that’s fixed or folding depending on what I have laying around. Even with a fixed rear, the sights still only go to a lower 1/3 cowitness and don’t impede your use of the optic, but if something happened you could rip that thing off (one could say you could detach it, quickly), and use the proper irons. A set of good irons is more than capable, but I always find that a single point of aim, IE a dot, etched or otherwise, is just faster and more accurate. Great video and great info. Another consideration for a truck gun that I’ve messed with is a pistol light on the support hand side; it’s easily turned on with the thumb, and something like the surefire x300 turbo now is putting out high candela that lets you get quite a bit of range while being extremely rugged. That being said, this is kind of an idea for someone who may already have one of these style pistol lights sitting around and is contemplating building a truck gun. Buying one new is coming pretty close to buying a full blown duty grade rifle optic in price ( they’re a hair over $300 when I see them - if buying new? Consider a surefire TLR-1 for half the money, but also much less performance). Again, real cool content and good ideas.

I really like the Inforce lights. I’m using Anderson lower, with PSA upper with flip up Magpul sights and older vortex prism with a quick detachment mount and Inforce light. Keep 20 round Magpul magazines with dust covers in my front doors. The (1) black magazine are loaded with fmj and the (3) fde are loaded with soft points. In the arm rest center console is my quick detach sling, if I’ve got to walk my fence line. My biggest problem is coyotes going after my calves. And starting to have problems with wild hogs, probably bigger problem than I realized or seen. Great video that I feel I can totally relate to. Thanks for everything you have done and doing.

I too am a fan of iron sights. Carried the M14 and M16 in Viet Nam. Always had iron sights on my hunting rifles even though they were equipped with scopes. Have you ever noticed that big game Rifles in Africa always have iron sights? They don’t fail when you need them. I’m a retired Master Gunnery Sergeant and was amazed when talking lately to a young Marine to find out that in boot camp they use ACOG scopes to qualify with their weapon. When I ask him about battle zeroing his iron sights he had no clue what I was talking about. Heaven help them if the ACOG fails!

I have also though about this, bring a pack back in after coming home every day seems like the only option. I don't like leaving a blaster in a vehicle overnight without being secure. Maybe a long box to lock up but then does the vehicle have the space. I do like the idea of folding pistol carbine or folding ar pistol. Things are getting crazy out there !

Im in the woods as well and go to town often. I normaly carry a glock 19 gen 3. I found the perfect carbine for me and thats the ruger pc 9mm carbine whick as we all know will take glock 9mm magazines. I keep my AR 15 M4 at home in my bedroom most of the time when i lay down for the night. I love how the ruger carbine breaks down so i can stash and hide it when im not in my truck.

My truck gun is a good old Hungarian AMD 65 with an ultimak railed gas tube and red dot, that way I have a co witness with my irons. The rifle folds up nicely and tucks behind the seat with a 20 round mag and a bandolier with 3 more 20 round magazines. All loaded with HP brown bear 7.62x39 👍🏻

I carry a G3C, I've been thinking of just keeping an MCK conversion kit in the car. After some practice with it, it does everything I would want a rifle to do in an emergency. Super accurate, and I really love the idea of only having to worry about 1 type of ammo and 1 type of magazine for both. Most people normally only carry 1 extra magazine, tops. This way I can keep 5 or 6 magazines in my car and I have that much ammo in rifle mode, but I also have that much ammo for my carry pistol. So this setup would add lots of mags to my carry when I'm around my car, and it would add scope, accuracy and distance to my carry if I convert it at the car, and I can still use all the ammo for both. You can also run +P for a little extra oomph. I don't know how much it actually helps, but you are getting about 10% higher pressure and an increase in speed, so it's at least a little more power than a regular 9mm

Too funny . My setup is almost identical. I'm using Colt LE6921 14.5 With Pinned F.H. I'm using Vortex Prism Optic . I figured why not have an etched reticle. I have Strealight TLR1HL and Proctor Sling . I run 3 mags in my Truck gun KIT.

Great video. I like the fixed A1 stock for many of the same reasons that you like iron sights. No need to mess with it it’s always ready. Even though A1 stock is bigger it’s also slick less to catch etc.

I carry a M&P 15 in mine. I live on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. I have found that taking it out and cleaning and oiling the crap out of it about every other month is a must. I’m also looking at a locking mount to keep it secured when I’m away from the vehicle. Great Video sir!

I never considered cost before, however that is a very valid concern and I value the iron sight as a "keep it simple" option. I recommend a ruger mini 14 with the short barrel. Very sturdy, fast handling, crazy reliable. A great grab and go gun. Way better than an AR for this purpose. Not a lot of stuff sticking out everywhere, won't catch on anything.

Good points. I tend to run a higher end with bells and whistles but then I don't rock a "truck gun" unless I'm specifically traveling or headed to the mountains. Around here the places you'd be most likely to have someone break in and steal the rifle are exactly the places that would come after you legally, or try to. They'd also be the kind of places to go after you if you used a rifle like this. As such, it's mostly not worth carrying one as a daily thing and I reserve having one for specific excursions. For slings snagging on things I find rubber bands to be a good option. They keep the sling snug to the rifle so it won't get caught on things in the vehicle but if you want to use the sling you can either undo the bands or just slide in a finger and pull on the sling, breaking the bands.

PSA AKV with triangle folding brace. I am also back and forth about a sling, but as of now I do opt for a standard AK sling. It just works. The gun is 19” folded and can be deployed quickly. 35 round mags of 9mm. I would prefer a rifle round, but this should get me out of most tight spots here in Ga. Iron sights for me as well. As much as I love a red dot. For something like this I use a low power variable optic. The primary arms ones run about $300 so not very expensive, and they have an etched reticle if your batteries go out. Then you have something close to a red dot, some zoom too. Not quite as durable as the fixed irons but I’d say it’s tough enough for some light tossing around.

Holo suns aren’t bad on price point. The solar panel and the shake awake system it has is why I love them. Let’s be honest. Things happen in milliseconds. Taking time to turn an optic on if you’re truly in the shit is a liability.

Great video. In my opinion, the best point was a gun you are confident and comfortable with. I am not a gun guy by any means. I have a Springfield XD40 and a Remington 1187 premium and that's it. I've owned both for years and know that without fail, in any situation, I can shoot the shit out of both of these weapons and am as comfortable with them as grabbing a fork at the dinner table. Again, in my opinion, being familiar and confident with your weapon is critical. More important than what type it is. Love the videos. Please keep em' coming ✊🏼

Right now it is illegal for me to carry a long gun in my vehicle. I will be leaving this Hell Hole (CA) soon. When I get back to my free state I plan on having an 8 inch AR pistol suppressed in 300 blackout on a roof rack that is lockable. 🤙🏼 Great video.

Same truck or Toyota 4 Runner in my case, gun. M4 A1 Colt Carbine. 1/7 twist M/P tested. 30 round magazines loaded with green tip 5.56 NATO ammo. Never go anywhere without it. My truck pistol is my HK .45 C loaded with G2 Research .45 ACP +P. With this set up I feel safe and well protected against pretty much any threat. I also have my Sig 365 XL with a Streamlight light,and a Romeo red dot in my glove box as backup just in case. I feel well prepared with this setup.

I agree with your rational. I have a different setup because I assembled a truck gun with spare parts I've had for years. For example I have aim point comp M2 in a Larue mount I've had for almost 20 years, LMT fixed sights I'd never use, and I have an old surefire m600 scout that has a much lower output than they are now. Lastly I keep USGI mags in the truck since they won't degrade over time.

You're pretty smart for a sailor, I run almost the exact same weapon, I just prefer the Colt A3's that I grew up with in the early 80s Marine Corps. Always shot expert from 200, 300 and 500 meters with iron sights (what's an ACOG?) Longer barrel, increased velocity, and longer sight radius makes a big difference with our longer shots and having to dope the always present wind out here in the West. Good advice and a pretty good channel so far. Keep up the good work, sailor.

You hit at 500 because that B-mod black is 20” wide by 40” tall. That’s a big damn stationary target. When we moved to the RCO (ACOG) and 14.5” barrels, Marines routinely hit 10/10 shots at the 500. Unheard of scores for the POG non-grunt masses in the iron sights days. Optics make the rifleman more lethal, by increasing hit rate and accuracy potential. There ain’t no fighting it brother, Semper Fi. (Edited to add that backup irons are always required, and 20” is a big damn stick for a vehicle gun - 16” hits just about as hard and can be had in dissipator length full rifle sight radius. Check out BallisticsByTheInch for some hard data on what .223 or 5.56 NATO does and doesn’t do from longer barrels. It may surprise you to see the diminishing returns after 16-18”. M16 A3 wasn’t around in the 80’s - that’s a flattop receiver that lacks a built-in carry handle. M16 A2 came in around the early to mid 80’s. If your rear sight required a tool for adjustment, then you had a M16A1 and not an A2 or A3.

Good selection and almost exactly what I run. I've got a cheaper foregrip, I left the front hand guard as factory and put a small rail to it for my light and I have bushmaster instead of Colt otherwise an identical setup. Having said that if I had a M1A in carbine length that's likely what I'd run just because as familiar as I am with the AR platforms, when I was in the fleet we were still using the M14 for most everything to do with a rifle. It stayed that way til just a couple years before I got out. The only time I wouldn't change for a carbine M1A is my patrol rifle for work and that's because we've all got ARs, so magazines interchange but I still like the 308. My patrol rifle is a bit more set up though too. Great video

I was raised on a farm back in the 50 ties and 60 ties, and lived there thru the late 90 ties. A rifle was in the gun rack in the back window till the mid 80 ties. We always had a gun in the truck, Now I have my M4 style that has a folding stock. I have it mounted on the ceiling right on the back side of the sun shade. One in the chamber with safe on. Barrel towards the drive side door. I can look like I have my hands up I want no trouble, if a threat looks like they are coming towards me. I pity the fool ( A TEAM ) Love your content. Capt. I don't carry a truck gun yet just an every day carry pistol but if we get to the point where I think I need one it will likely be a simple setup as you described. As of right now the way I see it the downside of having it stolen slightly outweighs the up side of having a long gun just in case. If the odds go up that a long gun might be needed that will change but in most cases shit is over by the time you would be able to grab your long gun. I did carry one during the Ferguson riot period when living in St. louis county though.

I keep a sling on my truck gun. I use two velcro staps on it so I can deploy it when I need it. I strap the body of the sling over the left side so it is out of the way of of the trigger ejection port charging handle and forward assist so if I need it quick I can still fire it without inducing a malfunction.

I keep one in the door pocket. I use QD attachments so it only takes a few seconds to put it on the gun. I experimented with leaving it attached at the front and tying it around the handguard, but I found that it’s quicker to just leave it off and reattach it when needed than it is to untie it.

If you solely rely on a long gun and don’t conceal carry or at least have a pistol on your person or in your console/glovebox, then your not playing self defense right. I’ve been on the highway north of ATL heading back to Ft Campbell and BoweLMovement decided to have a protest on 75 and as I was approaching the stopped traffic the police had broken up the group and they were leaving. At that point I grabbed my .300 blk from the trunk and sat it upright in my passenger seat with a blanket over it. A group of young men were approaching the group of vehicles that I was near and one of them pointed at me and said “white boy looks scared.” At that point they started to surround my car so I pulled the blanket off my AR and they just walked away without saying a word. I was cc’ing my Walther but my AR was available if needed but I would’ve used my Walther first since their attention was in my rifle and not necessarily on me. Surprise mudafuka!!!

I just picked up an Anderson Manufacturing AR for my car. They are made in KY, forged aluminum receiver. Really great value for $600. And you can even pick them up used for less. I would still be a little bummed if I had a Colt stolen, so I went that route.

Simple is good - only thing I would change for my setup is I would swap out the irons for a 1-4 with an illuminated dot. I like having the dot but the scope is still usable if the batteries die.

Great points. I agree. Straight up iron sights are the best, especially in this situation. I’ve put two 5.56 rounds through the same hole at 50yards, with the third only an eighth to a quarter inch away. We’re good with that. 😉I do keep a red dot on mine with lots of extra batteries around, but will ditch that in a heartbeat and go to the irons when required; without hesitation. Batteries are my nemesis, I don’t rely on them ever. The flashlight is a great asset at night in real life. In general, I think you’re right. Don’t keep anything expensive in your vehicle. Be prepared, but be prepared to lose that weapon, until you fight your way back to your primary. Great content, keep it coming.

I get the decision to skip the sling in the truck, too much to get hung on when deploying. However, I personally would HAVE a QD sling in the truck, so if I needed to take it on the leather I could sling the rifle. Having a long gun in the vehicle has always been a thing where I live. It’s like 4wd, better to have and not need than need and not have.

I would really like to hear how you secure this rifle when you are not in the truck. Car thefts and break-ins happen, and I certainly don't want to give a criminal another firearm! Also, if you often have a bunch of stuff rolling around in your truck, eventually something WILL get stuck in or around your rifle. Very bad plan, there.

I work for myself so I'm able to constantly be armed. Most people won't have that luxury. Being I wear a holster that's my fastest go to. Having a cheap but reliable rifle stashed in a vehicle is my plan b. People wonder why I wear my gun in the house. The gun doesn't annoy me for the most part but one thing that is more annoying is taking it off and on and putting it in and out of the safe constantly. Kinda defeats the purpose of having it. Having a pistol thats somewhere in a vehicle is better than nothing but slows you down. Then you have the risk of someone else getting there hands on it. If your gun is secure in you car put it on as soon as you get back to the car. Wear it while traveling and going in stores. People have arrived home to find criminals in the house. If you left a gun unsecure in there you could very well be shot with your own weapon. That would really suck.

I def appreciate this video and thought you put into your choices. I use to share the same concern and ran a cheap AK on me, but in time I realized I didn’t want to fight with that gun. Also I spend at least as much or more time away from my home then do at my home due to work and time spent shopping and eating out. I finally concluded I wanted to have a setup with me that I fully trusted for any task and would want to use for battle or any situation. While the financial sting would hurt if stolen, the sting of needing my fully kitted out nice rifle and not having it would be worse. Also I’ve done the most training with certain guns with dots and slings so that’s how I prefer to have all mine.
