I sure hope they get done with that expansion before the snows hit. I have a feeling this could be a very cold winter. Also, switch to using sawdust instead of sand, that gets rid of the problem completely

We get three cutting off our alfalfa last year almost four but didn’t risk it. Same with hay and straw . We plant field corn a lot of it and soybeans , wheat ., rye , canola plant . Sometime we let our land go to goverment to help with bills but still put manure on the fields but can’t till or disc for one year.Does your sisters haul manure or just feed calves and red cows and open gates and milk.Your new barn is looking really good hope you don’t run into the walls.

I have a nursery and we literally build beds to root cuttings in in the field and we cover the top with 2 inches of sand and work it in every year. It took about 6-7 years before the soils got sandy. We didn’t mind because it actually is beneficial for us to have sandy soil rooting cuttings. But the amount you are spreading will not affect your ground for years and years. Maybe like 20 years+

Jan, I don't think sand in those quantities is going to be a problem for your soil. Topsoil is just sand mixed with organic materials anyway; you're spreading a whole lot of organic material along with the sand.
@deshaunjackson81883 жыл бұрын
It really just depends. From what I have heard the top soil on Jan's fields are pretty sandy as is. I am pretty sure their is a service that collects soil samples from different points in all your fields and gives you a comprehensive soil report. It isn't "cheap" per say but can easily pay for itself in increased crop yields. Something to think about. To much sand can be bad and might require deep ripping, which is really expensive (so i gather) my friend's family provides the service here in the central valley of California and they are doing very well. From what I have heard the deep ripping here has more to do with the dissolved salts from the water, that have built up in the soil over time.
I like your videos very informative. And you give good explanation.

Yep. Every pen has a boss cow or heifer. Once you take the bossy one out, someone else always fills in
@timothymbonham44533 жыл бұрын
In horses, they definitely have a boss -- 'alpha mare' is in charge, and others have an order below her. A new animal in the herd will generally move into about the same position in the pecking order as she was in the herd she came from. Problems occur when the new one was the boss in her old herd -- there will be serious conflict between her and the current boss of this herd, until one of them comes out on top.
@randallmidgley75893 жыл бұрын
Oh yes there is a pecking order it's incredible to watch, same cows first into parlor, and if they are outside and you put a pile of dirt, lots of josling to see who is the top cow.

that new pack barn is gonna be nice, but I am concerned about the water in the middle of the buildings and isn't that the same area where you had the problem with freezing water lines last winter, how are you going to access that area if you have to

Will all the cows be in the barns when this barn is finished, or will some still be outside in the corrals? Love the “Ladies”!
@timothymbonham44533 жыл бұрын
I think they are increasing the milking herd to fill the added barn space. Only the milking cows, those about to give birth, the weanling calves, and the sick/special needs cows are inside. Still staying outside are the milk cows during their 2 month 'vacation', the young heifers not yet at milking age, and the steers being raised for meat.
@warehouseman63253 жыл бұрын
Love the new addition. Why did you leave so much open space between the barns. Isn't that gonna be wasted real-estate

I'm inclined to agree with some of the comments. The amount of sand in the manure is very small I doubt if it will make much difference. Except maybe in your Lucerne paddocks where the sand could prove use full when sowing small seeds like Lucerne and clovers.

Jan are you going to build up the ground between the two buildings and slope it to the drain. I think it was a good decision to cut the alfalfa since your short foliage for the cows. Are you going to put the bales under plastic if it doesn't get rained on ? Your new building addition looks like it's coming along nicely, looks great. Always love drone footage of the farm. Have you filled up the sand pile in the building yet cuz last time it was pretty wet out to get at it to fill up the building. Waiting for the next video to come out as I love your milking videos and what it takes to keep it running and I have to complement you on how clean it always looks. Have a great week and stay safe.

in that open area between the barns where you were showing us the drain, what's going to be in that area?
@donaldshinn19153 жыл бұрын
Why not put gutters on roofs uto eliminate mud area, which if left to accumulate will provide breeding area for mosquitoes. Bacteria and other diease organisms. Run the gutters right in 8 " drain pipe
@timothymbonham44533 жыл бұрын
Gutters are an expensive addition when building, and require regular maintenance to keep working. Otherwise leaves, etc. build up in them, and provide an excellent breeding ground for mosquitoes. And Jan et al don't need another maintenance task to do a few times per year! So it's pretty common to not have gutters on barns or other farm buildings.

With the meticulous records you're currently keeping on your milking herd, I was wondering how many cows you were milking on August 23, 2015 compared to the 335 you're currently milking today to be able to afford such a leap in barn space?
