3rd Gen Tacoma Rear Bumper & Hitch Removal

This video goes into detail on the process of removing your 2016-present Tacoma rear bumper. I am replacing mine with a steel CBI bumper so the whole thing needs to come off.

Hi, I'm wondering how long it took you to get the whole thing out. I bent the trailer hitch and need to replace it. I have the new one now, but I don't know how many hours I'll need to take the old one out and install the new one. Thanks.

It shouldn’t take long. Maybe schedule a couple hours. Two people and an impact wrench would speed things up.

Hey there from Highlands Ranch! I really appreciate your video. Ive got to take my bumber off to change the wiring harness. License plate lights and Blind Spot Monitor stopped working all at once. The rear parking sonar still works. From my research, there r issues with the harness getting dirt/water into the bsn connection. And, to remove/replace the harness, literally requires tearing apart the entire bumper. Since you have a new CBI bumper, did you happen to take off your harness? Any tips other than take your time and dont get frustrated? 😅 thanks again!

Hi, out of curiosity, can you remove just the tow hitch with out removing the bumper?

No, it’s all one piece.

@@infosponge thank you, I appreciate the info. I did some more research, the 4 cylinder tacos come without the tow hitch, I’m gana replace mine with that one. I’m going this route since I don’t tow, plus it will give me a little bit more of a clearance departure.

You first pointed out 7 bolts on each side that needed to be removed but then only removed 5 on each side.

2 of the bolts are guides for the slot in the bracket. They just get loosened.

Do you know if you bump into something or someone backed into your truck that it can make the bumper pushed in a little bit or shifted over to the right or the left if so what parts on the rear bumper would need to be replaced

I would assume the metal bumper frame is bent.

The third gen Toyota Tacoma rear bumper has alignment issues from the factory This is a common problem across all three generations of Tacoma Even the Toyota tundra has alignment issues with the rear bumper causing it to sit crooked It can be adjusted slightly but there's not much play You basically have to remove the plastic caps and adjust each side separately to get the alignment right because the bumper and hitch is fully assembled off the vehicle and then attached

FYI y’all the truck bed on these should be lifted up a bit to make the bumper slide out. Won’t hassle as much

Does the hitch have to come off with the bumper?

I believe so, they are both bolted to the same place on the frame. The hitch could be reinstalled though.
