Finally, someone has taken the time to do a COMPLETE removal and installation on a Toyota Tundra. You did an amazing job. Your attention to detail from both the mechanical and video filming is top-notch. Toyota should be paying you for helping to keep their trucks looking great!

This is by far the most instructional and best shot DIY bumper removal and re-install available for Toyota Tundra. Several other KZbin videos were from vendors telling you how good their bumpers were, with no instruction then asking for a thumbs up (ridiculous). This one is nicely shot. Great DIY!!!

Good job! It looks great! I personally do not care for chrome bumpers, they seem to require too much care and maintenance. The plasti dip makes the bumper look great. It gives it that rougher more aggressive look. The only issue is you'll have to be more careful around the left side step.

@AutoDIY7 жыл бұрын
I was worried about it scuffing and coming off, but it is surprisingly tough stuff, no scuffs or scratches in it yet. I could just be lucky though. However if it does start to look bad it is easy enough to fix by re-coating, or just removing the old dip and starting over again.

fantastic video man. i bed lined all of the chrome on my 2014 tundra. little tip on plasitdip, if you use a clear coat on top of it it will still peel and all of the clear coat will chip off too.

Grant Randol so are you saying I shouldn't put a clear coat over the plasti dip? Just leave it as is after the final coat?
@randol.official7 жыл бұрын
use a clear coat on top of the plastidip, not the plastidip clear coat but a high gloss clear coat, it will make it look really nice and you can still peel it all off. its what i used on my 2014 FJ Cruiser bumpers and door handles. you just have to spray very thin coats. best part is if it gets dirty you can just spray over it!

Thanks, you gave me info on replacing my 2007 Tundra bumper I, not someone else, dented. Too bad you can't, affordably, get those old J. C. Whitney steel, simple bumpers like I had on my 1979 Ford, I was much younger then. Interesting that the new ones don't bolt to the frame.
@CybekCusal10 ай бұрын
That's sick! You don't need to etch or sand it first for it to grab?
@AutoDIY10 ай бұрын
Not for plastidip you don't. This is a temporary coating, you can peal it off and the surface below is unharmed, which is nice if you ever want to return it to stock. If you were painting it you would want to scuff and use an adhesion promotor.
@wesdean19773 жыл бұрын
I actually did this to my bumper to replace the chrome one that was completely rusted prior to stumbling on this. Would you have to have part numbers to plug the sensor holes (mine is not equipped) as well as that for the tiny plastic clip that snaps in on corner pieces on side along quarter panel side? (white clip that snaps into trim then into bumper) Thanks

This may be outdated but how durable was the plasti dip? Did it chip and revealed the chrome when it got hit by rocks?
@AutoDIY5 жыл бұрын
Rocks kicked up by the tires don't really chip plasti dip very much at all. Backing into a sign post however did rub off a small piece of the dip and reveal the chrome below. Never fear though it is easy to recoat and repair when it gets damaged. I do think if you are committed to eliminating the chrome going with something more durable like bed liner for example would be a much better choice. Great question and best of luck on your project.

@AutoDIY9 ай бұрын
In most cases it lasts a few years before showing wear, in my case it took about 5 years to show some chrome breaking through, but I have not been hard on this truck. It could use a recoat now, but I may just opt for some overland bumpers because this truck seems to want to love forever.

@AutoDIY5 жыл бұрын
It keeps up, in fact it stays right behind me no matter how fast I drive. ;) Just kidding. The plasti dip still looks good with the exception of a few dots that have worn off where the plastic cover meets the metal. Evidently when I stand on it to access the bed, it depresses and rubs on the plasti dip which has worn away in those spots revealing the chrome below. So not perfect but pretty good. Thanks for watching and taking the time to post, and sorry about my sense of humor.

Excellent video thanks for doing it.

Sounds like you are off to a great start with your truck upgrades. I left the front bumper on when I dipped it. I did remove the grill surround, I even created a video about that project called "Painting Over Chrome Tundra Grill Surround" you can find it on my channel. It is very easy to remove, a little tough to disassemble completely, but a project that is well worth the time and effort. Thanks for watching and taking the time to post your questions. Best of luck with your projects.

how long does this stuff Last and how easy is it to scuff being on a bumber
@AutoDIY8 жыл бұрын
Depends on how you treat it, it has lasted more than 3 years on the emblems, so far there is no wear on the bumper but it hasn't been on very long yet. I am sure if you rub things against often like in the truck bed it would not last long at all, but I am guessing I will get a few years out of the bumper before I decide to remove it or respray. Good luck to you.
@mikemjw4533 Жыл бұрын
I know this is 7 years old - do you still own the truck? If so how’s it holding up?
@AutoDIY Жыл бұрын
I do still own this truck, my son drives it now. It is just too dependable to part with. The Plasti Dip has held up okay, I do have wear spots where the plastic step on the top of the bumper has rubbed some of the Plasti Dip off from climbing in an out of the bed and standing on the bumper. It is not easy to spot, but it is not perfect anymore. I also backed into a sign post that rubbed a bit of the dip off exposing the chrome beneath (I am not proud of that). For a nonpermanent coating, I am impressed it looks as good as it does after all these years. Thanks for watching and posting your question.

Awesome video man. Very nice and clean truck Subscribe for sure I want to see more but this will be my first project. I don’t know much about the plastic dip u used and I planed on just using primer and paint to do the job.. what would be the difference and why did u choose plastic?
@AutoDIY6 жыл бұрын
I used plasti dip because it is easy to apply and easy to undo if you decide you want to change it again in the future. It peels off leaving a clean undamaged surface below it (easy to return to stock). I like it so much though that I will likely remove the plasti dip and replace it with a bed liner product. Primer and paint over chrome can be challenging, but it is possible with the right products and steps. Good luck with your project, thank you for watching, posting and subbing.

Looks good! I am glad im not the only OCD, neat freak out there. Lookin to do this for my Silverado. How durable is this stuff??
@AutoDIY6 жыл бұрын
We are not alone in our OCD. It is surprisingly durable stuff, I do have some pinpoint spots where it has rubbed off along the edge of the plastic step. Which happened from me standing on the bumper to climb into the bed, the plastic moves slightly down on this truck and it has managed to rub off of tiny bit of the dip, which exposed some of the chrome, even a pin hole is visible against the black. I haven't fixed it yet, but it is fixable, and driving my OCD bananas :)

Still on after 4 years, there are some spots where stepping on the plastic cover has caused some small spots of the dip to rub off to reveal the chrome below. Right along the edge of the top cover, the bottom of the cover has little fins on it, when I stand on it, it presses down slightly. Those are easy enough to touch up, overall really happy with how long it has lasted.

Thanks, it is holding up well with some small exceptions where the plastic step cover meets the top of the bumper. It is holding up really well with a few small exceptions. There are some tiny spots where the chrome is showing though, I use my bed a lot, and I step on the bumper surface a lot. When doing so the plastic tread on the top of the bumper moves slightly and it has worn some small specs of dip off at the contact points at the top bumper (very small like the head of pen). Nothing that can't be fixed but worth noting.

How is your plasti Dip holding up??
@AutoDIY6 жыл бұрын
For the most part it has held up well, the issue with the rear bumper is the plastic step cover moves slightly when I stand on it. The underside of the cover has several little spikes around the edge where it meets the bumper that has managed to scratch tiny bits of the dip off. Just a milometer or two, but they stand out when the chrome shines though. Thinking I will remove the step cover and trim the plastic spikes from the edge of the cover recoat the top edge and reinstall the cover.
