I love how you customize Abeka to work for you ! We used Abeka arithmetic last year and it worked out really well! I did also skip a test when I knew she already mastered a concept and added in when I needed to ! This was such a great in depth view of Abeka language!!! 😊

Thank you so much! Sometimes I wonder if I give too much detail but I think of what I’d want to see before I took the plunge into a curriculum. Glad you were able to make it your own too! ☺️

We are using Abeka 3rd grade for Language arts, reading, and spelling; in the fall with my two kids. I wanted to double up days or maybe even skip some lessons when possible to cut down the full 170 days of instruction; your video made me think this would be possible. I was glad to hear the final 10 lessons are mainly review. I'm hoping as they move through it; once I can see it is mastered; it would be ok to pass over certain material. And shorten the curriculum closer to the 150 lesson range. I did love TGTB's shorter lesson numbers; to leave room for other activities (co-op days, field trips, and some interest based learning); we have in mind for our 180 days. Do you think it is possible to customize Abeka that much?

Watching this because I am planning on homeschooling my son next year and am trying to learn as much as I can. But I just wanted to say I love that within this language arts lesson, your daughter was curious and therefore learning a mini-science lesson within all of that. The fact that she asked why it was dangerous and knew there were special glasses is awesome. I know you edited that down for us, but I think that’s a great benefit of homeschool, the ability to get a little sidetracked and allowed to be curious. After all curiosity is the best precursor for learning.

Love this! I just switched from The Good and The Beautiful to Abeka for LA for my 3rd grade. I didn't purchase the teacher guide, hoping I can get away with just the workbooks.
@thepracticalhomeschooler

The good thing about the workbooks is that on the top of every page it gives a brief review and summary of what was taught in each lesson, so if you make sure to review that every day then that should be a big help.

I am also looking for another LA curriculum. We are using TGTB this year for 2nd grade (Level 2), and I am honestly not super impressed. I find the lessons clunky & not very teacher-friendly. The spelling rules are odd & complex, the grammar is lacking, & I just don't feel like it's presented well. Yes, it's pretty to look at, but...that's not what really matters. How's Abeka LA going for you this year? And without the Teacher Guide?

@@ajgehlhausen I agree on the Good and the Beautiful, it gets rave reviews, but it's not for everyone. I looked through a physical book once at a store and found it too be too "fluffy" for my brain, and I just think some concepts can be easily missed that way. It all depends on you (the teacher) and the student's style of learning. I love that Abeka gets straight to the point, and teaches so comprehensively. Like in this video, you can skip things that are too repetitive, to tailor it to your needs. I don't want to make my school days drag on too long, and I feel like Abeka helps me achieve that. You can still always get that Charlotte Mason style in your school day by reading out loud living books that are beautiful literature.

This video helped me so much! I have only ever used Kindergarten Abeka which is going great. Then one day I walked into a store and looked at the Abeka text books that come after Kindergarten and I was instantly intimidated and scared! Thank you for easing my anxiety by showing how it's not as daunting as you may perceive it at first. You explained it so simply and now I know for sure that I will always continue to use Abeka. I love it so much, it's so comprehensive, and If it ain't broke.... 😁😁😁😁

If you can get through the kindergarten (especially if you’ve used the lesson plans) you can get through the others! Abeka can be a LOT because it’s created for classrooms and they have tweaked it a bit for homeschooling but it’s still a classroom style. But with that said, it’s definitely doable and you can choose what works for you and your kids and don’t use or teach what doesn’t! Thanks for the kind words 🥰

Have you used other LA programs in the past? If so, what do you enjoy about Abeka better? Thanks for this video! Looking into Abeka for 3rd grade. We are using TGTB Level 2 this year for my 7-year-old son, and not super impressed.

Yes we’ve done easy peasy and TGTB, but I’ve looked at samples and videos of SO many others! I love that Abeka is traditional (which I like doing for LA) and has a spiral approach, continually reviewing concepts. They are more no nonsense in their approach to teaching which I can really appreciate, and for the lower elementary all of their work sheets are super bright and colorful and they offer a variety of different exercises which I really enjoy too. I think they offer one of the strongest phonics programs out there for young readers as well!

Hi, do you do any supplemental work for language arts with any of your girls? Or is it just Math you do supplemental work? Thanks! Love watching all your homeschooling videos ❤

If you do the uncreditted would that hurt you if you want to put them back in school nect year or?and also can you fo one book at a time or do you have to do everybook each day,jw it seems like a lot of money for me in my situation rn,can you just buy 1 at a time
@thepracticalhomeschooler
@thepracticalhomeschooler 3 жыл бұрын
unaccredited just basically means you don’t have to submit grades to Abeka (there’s a bit more to it but that’s the gist). Whether you do accredited or not shouldn’t affect school next year. It does seem like a lot but its really just grammar, spelling and reading daily. If your budget is tight you can just get the main workbooks and not all the extras like the charts and such. Also, you don’t NEED the readers. You can just borrow books from the library that are on grade level.

This will be our first year homeschooling, 3rd and 4th grade. Do you feel I need to DVD's or is it simple enough? I have ZERO teaching experience 🤣
@thepracticalhomeschooler

Aww I get the concern! Most of us homeschool moms don’t have school teaching experience. Getting the teacher guides will help, but don’t feel like you can’t do it! You got this! Ultimately it’s obviously up to you whatever you decide, but you’re more competent than you think ☺️

I know I’m late to watching this video but we are switching to Abeka language arts for my 7 year old “2nd grader” and wondering if you think we can do it without the teachers guide? The cost of it is more than a bit daunting.. anyone out there have an opinion on this? Help! LOL
@thepracticalhomeschooler
@thepracticalhomeschooler 3 жыл бұрын
You don’t NEED the teacher guides! Many people do it without. Teacher guides helps to introduce and reinforce concepts and in 2nd grade is still reviewing the phonics charts that Abeka uses. But again, they workbooks is not solely dependent on the teacher guide.
