We have used Abeka quite a bit, but I liked seeing how they've changed and updated third grade!

Just seeing your channel. Thanks for this video, I can’t find many on here that use Abeka. We’ve been doing Abeka 4 years now, all subjects.

My son and I have been doing Abeka for 2 years now, we just finished the 3rd grade and you are right about the points you made: They don’t provide enough examples of book reports or a great paragraph. Sometimes the lesson plan book is not necessary and sometimes useless. We finished and I feel as he is weak in L.A and he is bright and good. Abeka simply is not made for the homeschooling program but for people with small schools at home or in the basement or whatever. I wish they will provide more example of what to do in writing as well, after all that curriculum lesson plan book is pricey enough to be used a few times only.

That looks like their is tons of practice!!! My kids couldn’t write that much!!! I’m glad we don’t do handwriting for my older kids and my youngest daughter will drop handwriting when she can write her letters. She’s the 1st kid I’ve taught handwriting for as my older kids learnt it in school.

I just found writing and grammar work text language 3 my book is way different ( found at a thrift store ) I have no teacher manual think we will be alright? Have never used abeka

Great score on the thrifted books. I think you might want to look up other videos that feature the older version so that you can get a better idea. They might be more helpful!

We have been using TGTB and while I love it, my soon to be 3rd grade son just isn't loving the language arts. It's not short, sweet and to the point enough for him. He has, in so many words, asked for more predictability. I know you said this isn't the same thing everyday but it does seem short and sweet even with the creative writing. Do you feel like that is true? Also, were the creative writing assignments daily or less frequent? Last question, if you know of a more predictable curriculum, can you give suggestions on that? I'll give them a look 😊
@thepracticalhomeschooler2 жыл бұрын
If you’re looking for more predictability Abeka will have that. It’s a variety of exercises but it’s the same worksheet daily and the teacher lesson plans are similar. Very to the point. Although I’ve looked into many many other LA curriculums I’m not familiar enough with them to provide feedback or direction. If you’re interested in Abeka 3rd grade and want to use the teacher lesson plans, I did a video on that which shows how they’re laid out.

Once you get to the creative writing part of the year, they’re nearly daily…however they may assign a project but give the child several days to write the outline, then write the actual paper, then edit the paper. So it’s definitely not a new assignment daily. But they are doing some form of the writing process every day

Thanks for doing this review. I'm wondering if the workbook, spelling book and reading comprehension book would be enough without the writing with purpose. I think it might be too much writing for my son.

@@erinb.3495 @thepracticalhomeschooler, I would love to hear your perspective on this question. :-) We struggle with writing in the TGATB LA.

Did you feel like you needed the teacher key for the grammar book?
@thepracticalhomeschooler3 жыл бұрын
Ooh good question. I didn’t use it, but I used the lesson plans and I felt ok at this level not using it. But if the parent isn’t super comfortable with grammar, I would say get it just in case!

How do you feel about the writing component of the curriculum? I have heard that it’s not really giving kids the practice they need to be better writers.
@thepracticalhomeschooler2 жыл бұрын
Don’t love it but for 3rd grade that’s not a main focus of mine. For older grades, I wouldn’t recommend it personally
@FavuQuad2 жыл бұрын
@@thepracticalhomeschooler so you wouldn’t recommend abeka for older kids? Or just not the writing?

@@FavuQuad the writing. The grammar is still very strong

Do you think this could be done (or would it be too much) in a 4-day/week homeschool?
@thepracticalhomeschooler2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! You would need to double up on lessons one day but the lessons aren’t bad at all.
@jenniferchildress97853 жыл бұрын
Are the lesson plans absolutely necessary?
@thepracticalhomeschooler3 жыл бұрын
No they aren’t. The good thing about the workbook is that it reviews the lesson from the lesson plan by giving a brief summary. And if you’re comfortable with grammar, you definitely don’t need the lesson plans. I just liked to have them as kind of a guide and extra practice
