Homeschool mama of 3 here! Thank you for this video- my youngest has been my toughest on teaching to read and I think this is what he needs. Totally forgot it was on my shelf and I could use it outside of the current curriculum we use now. 👏🏻

This is SOOO helpful! Thank you so much for making this video--helped me figure out what materials I actually needed from Abeka to teach my son how to read. I was overwhelmed by the lesson plans and number of resources before but this encouraged me to keep it simple. Now, we are about 1/4 of the way through the Abeka Handbook for Reading and it has been easy to stay consistent in his lessons because it is so simple and straightforward.

I have never seen this explained! How cool!! It looks like a great way to teach and learn reading. Doesn't it feel so great when it works and it clicks with them? I've been using this book, actually I started with the older version, since 1982. I've taught my own, and have since taught beginning readers and non-readers. This is THE best method. I like that you explain how to blend! If they aren't blending, tell them, have them repeat, and practice. For example, If they say L.A. and aren't blending "la," just tell them. I agree that they should know short vowels before teaching long vowels. Don't be in a hurry. Practice a few minutes each day, and only one page a day.

Thos was fantastic! This is the best explanation I have seen. My 3.5 year has asked me to teach her to read. She knows letters and sounds but I still think she is so young. She sees her older siblings reading and so she wants to as well. I've been looking into Abeka because of your videos and I think this will work well and just take it extremely slow and at her pace. Just a page a day. It built on each other well. That paired with the little readers worked well 👌. I know traditional isn’t very popular (I used to feel the same way), but if it works then you gotta go for what works. You don’t have to have him do all the seat work and all and if he doesn’t like worksheets I know all about reading doesn’t really use worksheets at all.

I think it would depend on your child and how much reading they know. I couldn’t be the one to tell you where to start…sorry, I know that’s not super helpful! Question. My daughter is reading cvc words but as I started teaching her long vowels , she is getting all her words wrong, she confuses them. We are using My Fathers World. And she did well until they introduced the long vowels. She is 6 doing their first grade. My question is, how do you teach the long vowels without a teacher manual?? My fathers world will have them identify on the workbook the shirt and long vowels very similarly on how you showed here. But when it comes to reading a reader and she sees short and long together in the page she will read the words wrong. She will confuse it. Like “cute” she will read as “cut” and vice versa. I have to remind her for each word. My point is I don’t feel like our curriculum is helping to much and it’s not sticking. How did you manage to teach it without the teacher’s manual? Like did your child just get it. Because mine does not. So I don’t know what curriculum to switch to! It’s so frustrating and anxiety provoking.
@thepracticalhomeschooler
@thepracticalhomeschooler 2 жыл бұрын
I think having the practice with the worksheets having to mark the vowels really helps too. And honestly, it really can just take some kids longer and that’s ok. They WILL get it. Don’t put too much pressure and stress on the situation as they can feel that. Sometimes just taking a step back for a bit and then coming back to it can really help. She will get it! Hang in there mama ❤️❤️❤️

ABeka reading is good but it is not complete. All about reading filled in the gaps that ABeka left behind. I am not affiliated with AAR. I just know I have a kid who did well with ABeka phonics but it still left gaps. And ABkea didn’t work well for my other child. All about reading is wonderful and explains why these letters/ letter combinations make these sounds. ABkea doesn’t teach syllables and that is a huge deal. AAR taught syllables and finally things made more and complete sense. Just something to consider form someone who has homeschooled a while and had taught kids of differing learning styles to read. And all those different learning styles loved and Soared with AAR.

Their website says grade 1-2. You did this for kinder-1? Was this age 5-6?

Yup! I got it from when my oldest daughter when to kindergarten at a Christian school. The second part of the book will be covered in first grade. But the kindergarten curriculum definitely calls for the charts that are in there so it aligns perfectly!

Do you think reading could be taught with just the Handbook for Reading and not the worksheets? I'm looking at starting to teach my middle son to read and he is not a fan of worksheets.

Hmm that’s a great question. Every child is so different so I don’t think you could say that absolutely would NOT work. I think if you reinforced the reading practice with the little readers that go with it, it might work. Youre could try it and see how it goes! You could also try doing the worksheets orally and working on them together as a reinforcement. There are so many ways to go about it!

I just watched a video by Teach Them Fun on All About Reading… no worksheets, just a lesson, basic games built into the activity book and readers. You might want to check that one out!

@@thepracticalhomeschooler Thank you! I will definitely check it out! We've just started using the Pre-Reading program from All About Reading, but the next level looked so much more advanced that I wasn't sure if it would work for his kindergarten year. I'll watch the Teach Them Fun video though!

Am I reading it wrong but the website looks like just the reading/phonics program is over $500.

That’s if you purchase everything as a kit. You can purchase a La cart for much much less!
