3rd Largest Freshwater Lobster In The World

Here In Western Australia we are lucky enough to have a species of freshwater lobster called the Marron. They are the 3rd largest freshwater lobster in the world and also very tasty. We have a short season where we are allowed to catch them each year and this is one of my days out with Ethan catching a feed.

I landed a 30+kg tuna on 50 pounds braid and 100 pounds leader on a saltiga 5000, solo fishing! I'm so stoked! Thanks for inspiring me❤️

The biggest freshwater cray I got was in the early 70s Wyena northern Tasmania and weighed over ten pounds.

I use to go down to dwellingup a lot as a child with the folks and still to this day i remember the biggest marron i've EVER seen which was side to side and still hanging out of the scoop.

I live for this shit! Awesome fun - but jut a couple of suggestions to help enhance your chances, open for anyone to comment too... I've found halogen lamps are a softer light and doesn't spook the marron as much. LED is just too bright and too white for the buggers. We've had really good success with snares and halogen torches, that way you don't seem to unsettle the other marron around burley patch... Also, this way you can coax the buggers into the snare using your torch beam - working the soft edge of your light closer to your prize and gently 'persuade' it in the direction you want - and then, GOT 'IM ON!!! Good stuff, keep it coming!

I’ve heard this also and tried it out 3-4 times this season. Once complete darkness has set it didn’t really matter. Just after sunset we found them to spook with the bright led but not the halogen as mentioned but once it had been dark for 1-2 hours it really didn’t matter anymore.

I second that and go further, if you can find an incandescent light it is softer again.

@@pressb agreed. And in all honesty, I think a headlamp can really work against you too unless you've trained yourself to always orientate your head to the side of the feed patch. That's why I'd also recommend just using a hand torch to do the dirty work of coaxing them into the snare. I still wear a headlamp, but that's just to see where I'm going and for spotting the nasty reptilian hazards around at that time of the year! My go-to torch is simply an old Makita hand-help lantern, I usually get a whole night out of the battery and the spread on the beam is nice and soft (rather than the lazer edge of the LED headlamp that cuts like a scalpel).

maybe its my headlamp then that may be helping as its a spread beam not a spot for the led. didn't have any issues using it with the snare a few other sessions either.

Yeah plenty of places you can use drop nets and scoops as well as snares. Rules let you know where what method is allowed
