My granddad (may he rest in peace) told me (back when I was a little boy) about the day he watched a German fighter getting chased down over the town we live in, eventually crashing in the nearby woods. What he remembered most vividly was the fear that one of the salvos might hit *him*. I still have the spent 20mm casing he picked up that day.

Did a little research, and Black 8 (or Schwarz 8) is an original Bf109G6, Black 2/Schwarz 2 is a Hispano Buchon rebuilt with a DB605 as a Bf109G14, and Yellow 27 is another Buchon which has been rebuilt as the very rare twin-seat Bf109G12 (including the canopy from a real G12), since this video it has been fitted with a DB605 to complete the trio of original configuration BF109s.

Commenting before I finish watching.. but I simply love and admire all these stunning aircraft.. but my passion is the Spitfire, has been for 40 years since I made my first Spit Airfix model with my dad aged 7.. To prove my inner nerd, I even have 2 FMS 1100mm Spits hanging on my living room wall, a Mk1 & Mk24. 🤓 I never mire or dismiss the Buchon either. The aircraft has its place and without it we would never have had iconic films like The Battle of Britain due to the sad lack of DB engined 109s available at the time.. As for my fave, it will always be the LFVIII/IX Spitfire.. 2 stage, 2 speed Merlin 60 series but still retaining Mitchells design purity.. Great video!

Me too: My mom bought me my first Spitfire model; a 1/72 Revell at age 8... and like a true "first love", it was forever. Later on, at age 12 I was able to build a full hangar of WW-II warbirds in 1/48 scale, then I started to see the beauty of both Me-109 and Fw-190, that almost reached the gorgeous beauty of the Spitfire! Today, at 66, I rate all of them highly, and come to appreciate each and everyone in its own beauty...except that I never liked the latter Spitfire marks, only love the original and up to the IX...

Superb video. Great sound. The only visuals I dislike on both of these planes is the nonretractable tail landing gear. Looks dated. Prefer the P51 and Typhoon retractable. The 5-blade propeller on Spitfire is quite nice and when starting in this video, it actually "spit fire" out the exhaust. Magnificent. 🏆🙌

The Messerschmitt Bf 109 (often referred to as Me 109) was a single-seat German fighter aircraft of the 1930s and 1940s. It belonged to a new generation of low-wing fighter aircraft, which were characterized by a closed cockpit, retractable landing gear and an all-metal construction of the fuselage and wings. In addition to their original purpose, various variants were also used as fighter-bombers, night-fighters and reconnaissance aircraft. With around 33,300 aircraft, the Bf 109 is one of the most-built aircraft and the most-built fighter in history. ----- In analogy to those later designed by Willy Messerschmitt aircraft such as the known Me 262, the type is often referred to as Me 109. After the official naming of the Reich aviation ministry (RLM), however, the historically correct designation was consistently Bf 109, since the design work began in 1934 at the Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFW). After renaming the BFW in Messerschmitt AG in 1938, the designation no longer changed, as with the Bf 110. All later developed by Messerschmitt aircraft types (Me 163, Me 210/410, etc.) but received the abbreviation Me in the type designation. The first flight took place in May 1935. The first series machines were incorporated in February 1937 in the "Jagdverbände" of the German Air Force. Despite the early start of construction before the outbreak of the Second World War, the Bf 109 was by constant improvements until 1945 a competitive pattern in use against the Allies. Until the unconditional surrender of the Wehrmacht in 1945, the Bf 109 remained the standard Luftwaffe fighter aircraft, supplemented by the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 from mid-1941 onwards. Airplanes of this type were also used by numerous other air forces, for example in Finland, Yugoslavia, Croatia, Romania , Hungary, Italy and Switzerland. Type: fighter Design Country: German Reich , German Empire Manufacturer: Messerschmitt First flight: May 28, 1935 [1] Built: 1937 Production time: 1936 to 1945 (HA-1112 to 1958) Number of pieces: approx. 33,300 (of which 30,573 from German production) --- In action, the Bf 109 E proved to be a very good fighter over Poland, Norway and France, which was flown by well-trained and partly combat-driven pilots. The disadvantage of the short range fell in the early campaigns of the Wehrmacht still little importance. Only during the Battle of Britain, when the German fighter squadrons met for the first time on a large scale on equal opponents (both in technical, and - with a certain time delay - in terms of tactics), the strengths and weaknesses of the Bf 109 E clearly visible. At medium and high altitudes, the Bf 109 E was faster than the Spitfire and significantly faster than the Hurricane at all altitudes. This height advantage could be used by the German pilots again and again, if they could plunge in accompanying operations from excessive positions on the British bombers attacking British fighters. With an armament of two 20 mm MG FF guns and two 7.92 mm MG 17 machine guns, they also had a greater firepower than the British hunters with their battery of eight 7.7 -mm machine guns - mainly due to the explosive ammunition of the machine guns. Compared to the British hunters Spitfire and Hurricane had the Bf 109 E a larger turning circle. Although it had a higher lift coefficient and a lower weight than the Spitfire, but due to its much smaller wing, it still had a roughly 20% larger turning circle at the same speed. In terms of fall speed, the Bf 109 E surpassed both British patterns. Another advantage of the Bf 109 E was the Daimler-Benz engine with direct fuel injection, which allowed to push hard into a dive without the engine suspended (defensive maneuvers in the air combat tactics). The British aircraft with carburetor engines had to initiate the dive with a time-consuming half-roll and therefore could not follow fast enough. The biggest disadvantage of the Bf 109 E at the time of the "Battle of Britain" was its short range. During escort operations, the German pilots often had only enough gasoline over their targets for ten to a maximum of 20 minutes air combat and often the choice to abandon the bomber or to risk a ditching in the English Channel because of fuel shortage. The development of the E-Series had brought a new, simplified cockpit can with improved armor before the beginning of the air battles over England with the E-4 version, but the urgently needed introduction of an additional tank could not be completed before the end of the Battle of Britain. This succeeded only in the fall of 1940 with the version E-7. - -- With no other aircraft model in the history of the air war more kills were achieved than with the Bf 109. For example, Erich Hartmann recorded 352 confirmed aerial victories, only in different models of the Bf 109th One of the most famous fighter pilots on a Bf 109 E and Bf 109 F in North Africa was Hans-Joachim Marseille, who scored 151 of his 158 total shootings against British Royal Air Force aircraft during the African campaign. Other drivers of the Bf 109, which achieved high firing numbers, were Gerhard Barkhorn with 301 aerial victories, Günther Rall with 275 aerial victories and Hermann Graf with 212 aerial victories. The most well-known pilots of the Bf 109 were Werner Mölders (115 victories) and Adolf Galland (104 victories), who successively held the post of general of fighter pilots. The extraordinarily high shooting numbers achieved with the Bf 109 in World War II are due to a combination of factors. Initially, the Bf 109 was a well-constructed aircraft, which was at the beginning and in the middle phase of its service life to the most powerful fighter aircraft was calculated. Similar to the British Spitfire, the Bf 109's cell was able to accommodate increasingly powerful engines and heavier weapons. This countered the general trend for higher speeds and higher altitudes in the aerial battles, as most aerial victories were achieved not by tight cornering but by surprise attacks from excessive positions. Thus, the Bf 109 was until about the end of 1942 as an aircraft that provided its pilots benefits that could be compared with the patterns of the opposing side or better than these were. In particular, in the first twelve months of the war against the Soviet Union, the German fighter pilots met technically obsolete enemy aircraft, which were used after outdated air combat tactics. This caused the firing numbers of the Luftwaffe to rise sharply. Mfg Magnus

@@barrierodliffe4155 if further questions are required, I am ready to answer them. And if you should take the trouble to read what I wrote a little more carefully, you would find that I have explained the advantages and disadvantages of the Me 109 here ... What was of course the most important point in a dogfight is the individual experience of the Pilots and implementation of the flying characteristics of the respective aircraft. If you look at the whole thing rationally, and of course disregard such factors as air superiority. And if you are so convinced that the Spitfire was better than the Me 109 in all areas, then you should definitely be able to prove this ... That about your comment: A long story which fails to explain why the Spitfire was better Mfg Magnus

@@magnusmcgraw It amazes me how much you get wrong, the Bf 109 E was not as fast as a Spitfire Mk I, I take the truth above your rants, the Spitfire had a better climb rate and better dive speed. If i look at it rationally then if the Bf 109 was better then the Luftwaffe should have done better at Dunkirk. It was Kesselring who said the Spitfire was the reason that the Luftwaffe could not prevent the evacuation. I also find that even when outnumbered three to one or more by Bf 109's, that Spitfires more than held their own in the Battle of Britain. You fail to explain anything at all. I know that the Bf 109 had an advantage at over 20,000 feet but that was no good for defending the bombers from the RAF and since the RAF concentrated mostly on the bombers then I go along with Adolf Galland who said the Spitfire was better at the job it had than the Bf 109 at the job it had.

@@barrierodliffe4155 that's silly of you to say so quickly that I'm totally wrong. Your facts on the subject are so ridiculous and ignorant, but that's your opinion. I won't bother to translate it for you now, but here are a few facts and dates. And you won't change anything about them either. it is always interesting to see how beautiful narrow-minded some people are. Read this or leave it ... Vergleich Supermarine “Spitfire” Mk. I/Mk. By the way, I fail to explain anything at all. Lol , if the Me 109 was as bad as you say here then explain to me why it was the most built and most successful fighter aircraft in WWII .. you genius. Over 100 German fighter pilots Asse achieved more than 100 confirmed kills with the Me 109. Your dear Adolf Galland in front! how many English pilots have such high numbers of kills? Don't tell me about the war and that I'm totally wrong. and you go along with Adolf Galland ?? Then you should read his biography, The First and the Last: The Rise and Fall of the German Fighter Forces: 1938-1945. Then you'd know what I'm talking about, you ridiculous little ignoramus.

@@magnusmcgraw Sure you have just one source and refuse to look at anything that does not agree with it. I look at as many different sources as I can. For the Bf 109 I have looked at German, French, US, USSR and Swiss sources and the German numbers are not the highest. I did read that but it is not very accurate, for a start the 1030 PS which is about 1044 was obtained at low boost. by the Battle of Britain the Spitfire and Hurricane were using the more efficient ROTOL prop and higher boost, the Mk II had th enewer Merlin XII engine so your uninformed source numbers are well out. Try this for size, the Spitfire Mk II using 2,850 rpm and 9 lbs boost gave 1,140 hp and both Mk I and Mk II could use 3,000 rpm and 12 lbs boost. Having looked at the first part and seeing so many errors I did not bother reading the rest. Unlike you I did not say the 109 was bad, it did serve right through the war but it was not as good as the Spitfire. You try to make out that the Bf 109 was better because of high claim numbers forgetting what they claimed or even that many Luftwaffe pilots overclaimed. Galland and I do have his book " The First and the Last" Unlike you he had great respect for the Spitfire. If you had a clue you would not quote Luftwaffe pilot claims, most of which were inferior aircraft and many of them false. Ignorance is your speciality.

If you're talking about favorite "sound," one Bf-109 may as well be counted among the Spitfires as it's the postwar Spanish mod' with a Merlin engine (just, in wartime German markings). The Spanish fitted many of their Bf-109, postwar, with Merlin engines as replacement Daimler-Benz were no longer available when those they already had neared the end of their service lives. While Franco's regime had great difficulty acquiring 'new' military tech (sanctions), the volumes of Merlin engines then-being surplussed were not considered 'sensitive' as the British were otherwise moving to jets. It would be interesting to have a Spitfire and Messer-Merlin with the same engine model do an exact flyby (same speed and altitude relative to recorder's position) as any difference in sound would be purely due to the difference in air flow over their respective air frames.
