That nest looks big and strong, but it doesn't look very warm like a lot of birds construct. No down or feathers lining it. to insulate the eggs, and help them to hatch sooner. It might be their instincts but I wonder why they don't try to keep their eggs warmer and better protected? Could you offer an opinion?

@@lynnkramer1211 I wish I knew. I noticed this nest lacks fluff compared to other eagles nest. It could be what they find in the area. Maybe FOBBV need to sneak some fluff in their nest while they are on vacation. 😄 All joking aside, I pray for a successful clutch next season. Blessings!🙏🥰🦅

Happy Springtime from the northwest corner (aka, the hills!) of Connecticut! We currently have red tails nesting on our hilltop. Saw mating activity occur about a month ago. They only started nesting here past 3-4 years. Now we have many. We have named the large one, the Tomahawk. Beautiful long chest plumes. My point is that all over America, coast to coast, we are seeing a strong population boost. I see posts in Massachusetts and Maine. Up and down the eastern seaboard. And out into the Ohio River Valleys. Raptors are thriving. And Jackie and Shadow’s resilience and commitment to mate shows why they are coming back stronger.

Very nice we have Prince Shadow and Princess Jackie rebuilding their nest . What a joy to watch them playing with sticks and rearranging their nest and thank you for the closeups beautiful pictures and you and whoever else is responsible for such ausome photography such a pleasure to watch and we laugh when we watch them fighting over the sticks .

For certain!! It's wonderful to watch these birds, and even the birds in my garden. This spring I finally managed to balance the good and bad bugs, and there's more birds than last year, some of the weeds are still here and I also added some good flower mixs

Would be great if Carers could get to nest and put a layer of insulation so frigid air does not come up through bottom of nest. Seems it would have to be drainable. I am not a nest engineer so hopefully a clever enthusiest can come up with something. Go Jackie and Shadow!

God gave the eagles and all other animals what they need to incubate their eggs. They have been doing this successfully in past years, and will continue to do so. Eagles are most populous in Alaska, which is frigid in comparison to the mountains of California. They are built for this weather and they chose this area. TTE-trust the Eagles

Not likely. Shadow is the male of the pair. Males eagles still cannot lay eggs as far as I know. Maybe the MSM can change that in the future, but I doubt it.

Great question! When adult eagles are in the nest they back up to the edge and eject out of the nest. Poop Shot. "Mute" refers both to the fecal matter and to the act of defecating in raptors. Eagles forcibly eject matter out of the cloaca, the act is called "Slicing".

Hi there! There are a multitude of factors that may affect hatchability. Unfortunately, we have no way of knowing what happened since the eggs cannot be retrieved and tested. It could be environmental, such as temperatures, humidity percentages, oxygen levels at high altitude, etc. (Even though there are a few other bald eagle nests at our altitude or above, ours is the only one we are aware of being monitored.) The issue could be biological with something just being off at the time the eggs were created. Hope this helps!
