The family gave a final statement late november 2016, that the house was sold to a trust and get 7.6M from government to restore it. Glad it's finally going to be restored. It was also used for filming of the ITV's new prime-time drama, Victoria.

It is big house that should have been put to better use long ago. The stealing of the family's wealth to provide for it, kept them from transitioning to that. Jobs lost and the township suffered as a result affecting everyone. Sad tell of over reaching government. I am not sure England's history will continue to be respected with such disrespect being shown here. I was amazed at the story behind the house. Someone should do a series on the home, and it's wonderful history, leading up to it's end. What a tale of caution it is.

The book "Black Diamonds" is an excellent read about WW, the later half of the Fitzwilliam family history all the way up to Kick Kennedy. I subscribed to the WW KZbin channel after I visited for the first time this summer (2023).

Have they gotten anything from the coal agency. It only makes sense that the heaving flloors and dropping rooms were caused by the coal excavation. They have done the same thing here in the States and had to pay compensation.

What a magnificent house! Regrettably it appears that the current owners are unable to keep up with the basic maintenance, and are doing little more than fighting a desperate rearguard action against the gradual decay. What the house needs is a new owner with exceptionally deep pockets. Memo to any tech billionaires in the market for a quiet little spot in the countryside.

+jec1ny Or the national trust... We don't want someone buying it and messing around with it.
@jec1ny9 жыл бұрын
I am not sure if the National Trust has the funds for this. On the upside though, because the house is Grade I listed, there is virtually no possibility of someone doing crazy stuff with it. The couldn't install a reading lamp without government approval.
@evanroberts85839 жыл бұрын
+jec1ny That's probably true about the national trust, especially considering that they are presently engaged with rebuilding Clandon after the fire. However, I can't see a private individual owning it. With regards to it being listed, yes it will be hard to alter, but when I saw "tech billionaire" I got worried about glass extensions, computers everywhere, etc. Automatic reaction thanks to my biases. :)

Now that the building is owned by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust they have produced a 25 year ‘Masterplan’ in 2018 to refurbish this building and the contractors are at present on the first stage of this work that will cost 7-8 million pounds.

They lost the case Newbold died In 2015 and was purchased by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust for £7 million needing over $40 million pounds in repairs .. Sad to see these magnificent Manor homes in such condition but their own magnificence grandeur and immense size financially ruined a lot of the families that owned them and its a conservation handicapped trying to re-purpose and make these grand estates self sustaining without losing historical value ..is a major problem

It's a shame of course that the house has lost so much of its treasures and beauty, and it’s always hard for families lose their homes. I do sympathize. But the winters immediately following World War II were bitterly cold and England was desperately poor. The lives of ordinary people must come ahead of the desires of wealthy aristocrats.
@MrCutsteel6 жыл бұрын
But as shown in the documentary, the ordinary people in the local area didn't want the grounds ripped up either. They enjoyed them too. I happen to live just a few miles from the house myself. It's beautiful and having this sort of heritage on our doorstep enriches all of our lives.

You need to read the history of this house it was spite and vandalism against a wealthy family by shinwell a Labour politician who knew nothing about the coal or quality of it !! He was even said to say we will get you out of house and put the poor working class in it he was an ignorant spiteful man he should have been thrown from office the wentworth family were good to the people around them that's why even the leader of the miners union wrote defending the house !
