@rtselby Hi, yes, I'm the 'official' current world record holder in recent times. Back in 1990, the winner of the nationwide competition was Thor Aackerlund. He had 2.8 million in that final round. I attended the Nintendo World Championships back then in Milwaukee. My highest score then was a mere 600,000+ and it wasn't high enough to get me into the final round of 7 competitors. Even so, it was a fantastic event.

I got 4th place in SLC. My score to play in the final seven was like 1.1M and my final score in the finals was 750K those scores are burnt into my memory forever.. And I'll never forget Jeff Falco who was traveling to beat out the other players which was LAME and should have been against the rules since he wasn't even local to the area, so I think of myself as getting 3rd in the state.

I am a friend of Jeff's mother and she told me that there were other people also traveling around the country trying to beat the other players but it is funny that you didn't mention that point in your comments.

Whether Jeff was alone or with others doing it it should have been banned. It was a competition for specific areas of the country and the best of each region would play at the national, so yes it is LAME for someone to go around the country beating others to try to knock out others. And yeah it sucks when you're 12 and someone way older than you comes in from some other state to beat you and the other people who are there.... Especially wearing a jacket that said "Tetris Master" on it...

The first reply seems to grasp it though, but you’re absolutely right about that High Stacking. From what I have learned about NWC, it’s all about getting to that Tetris and getting the pieces out as Fast as possible, which is what the High Stacking does extremely well.

@TeamUSASportsFan In CWTC play at high levels, yes. In this game? no. Beginning levels are extremely slow, so to go as fast as possible you have to stack very high so you can stack pieces much faster. The TAS does this to get through the levels as fast as possible.

Wow! Just...wow! I didn't advance past the first round of the competition, back in '90. I really loved your strategy of getting killed in round 1-1 of Mario, so you could collect more coins. I never thought of that until I saw your video. Everyone I played against barely had enough time to play Tetris, mainly because they kept crashing on Rad Racer. Great video. I wish I had these tips when I was in the competition.

yes, i actually participated this saturday, but the tournament has been going since early november. It was made by a Very well known retro gaming store here in Portugal. They've gathered the highscores from people all over the country (by doing the tryouts at certain events etc ). and the last qualifier was this Saturday :)

@2040Rumely Yes there was actually - if you drive into the finish line without crashing, your car skids to a halt, and it will take longer to get to Tetris. You have to time your crash just right, so that you cross the finish line when you do it. This tip was given by the Nintendo game counselors during a little show they did at the Nintendo World Championships.

Listen to Ben on this one. :) NES and TGM alike share in this spirit of challenge. NES Tetris was almost ahead of its time with what it achieved -- it was designed before speeds beyond 1G were even a thought, and yet Level 19 seems, in a sense, akin to TGM2's Death mode. In some ways, NES can be even more brutal. It's interesting to note that there are currently about the same number of NES Tetris max-outs as there are TGM3 GrandMasters.

No, this was just recently. At the actual competition, I only played the game 3 times. The first round, I had a mere 200,000 (just enough to get me through to the next round). In round 2 (up on stage), I had a score in the 400,000's. I then played it in the following round (the semi-finals), and I got a score that was in the 600,000's. It wasn't enough to get me into the finals, because the lowest score that moved onto the finals was over 1 million.

I can explain what was going on in the Tetris segment. When the block level goes higher and higher, that also means you're capable of putting down blocks faster, because it doesn't take as long to reach a solid level. If he cleared 4 Line Tetrises at the bottom level only, he wouldn't have been able to make as many 4 Line Tetrises in the long run because it would have taken him much longer to drop the blocks down to the bottom. It's extremely risky, but it's defo. got that high reward status.

@@nyastclair8174 LOL no they do not. I had two Swifts (93 and 97) and both rotted out so badly. The first one blew brake lines, then we tried to lift the car up by the frame channel - it collapsed. The entire floor was ruined. The second one lightly tapped a curb and the engine support rail was so rusted it cracked, breaking the top of the shock tower and pulling the CV shaft out of the inner connector. These cars may get good mileage, but they're shit in the rust belt. Perhaps one of the few cars that rust faster than a Lada.

One thing that bugs me like crazy when you play this version - if you watch the video you'll notice certain spots where it looks like I delay my piece movement, but it's actually something that happens in the game. Holding left/right/down sometimes stalls when moving the piece to the outside edge.

@MadaraStv Crashing doesn't effect Tetris. When you cross the finish line, the car skids to a stop (the skidding takes a few seconds). But, if you crash, it goes directly to Tetris, and you gain just a few more seconds.

It puts incredible strain on ons ability to push down as quickly and efficiently as possible and this video is the best known example of it. Its actually remarkably difficult to mauever peices that otherwise insist on going slow, to move so fast as he makes them move. Of course NES contains other skill sets as well, some of the maxout vids or even some of mine are examples of this. TGM is an icredible game with incredible players, but its players are certainly not at a "much higer level"

I did play in 1990, but my scores were quite low. Back then, my only Tetris experience was on GameBoy. In the qualifying round, where a player needed 150,000 to move on, I had a score of around 175,000. From there, you went to the stage and needed 175,000, and I had a little over 400,000. I moved on to the semifinals where they take the top 7 players, and my score was right around 625,000. Not enough to go any further, since the 7th place qualifier had over 1 million.

@kitaru2004 I think the idea of staying in level 1-1 was included in the repro game manual. Then it's just a matter of figuring out the fastest way to collect the coins - there really isn't too much variation you can use when collecting them, but it definitely takes a little practice especially with hitting the goombas just right. I tend to look at the game's clock when I enter pipes, and when I lose a life so I can make sure I'm on track.

Hi there. The TV I play on is not near my desktop computer. There is already a VHS hooked up to that tv, so I was just hitting record on the VHS. I'm able to go from VHS to a DVD recorder, and finally I have something I can put on a computer. I should get more acquainted with a better way to go straight to my desktop, but my recent recording method is working great (ipod touch). My ipod touch recording can be seen in my most recent upload.

@pelletier1986 There is no code for the game to get the blocks you need, but it does follow certain patterns based on your SMB score. I like to get greedy and stack tall. And yes, it's a reproduction cart, which I am very pleased to have. I thought I'd never have the chance to play it again, with the prices of the collector cartridges.

I think its the use of the word higher that NES folks might take some exception to. The Very Best NES Players and the very best TGM players are both about just as good at tetris as one another, just different versions thereof. One guy is actually one of the best at both. Now, The tetris you see in this is actually something of an augmented form of NES tetris. It starts on level 0 but only gives a very short amount of time to get as many points as possible.

Yes, I found that curious myself. But in his latest comment he said that he recorded this just recently, which I found odd. With today's means it's much more complicated to first record on VHS and then digitize the tape instead of just running it through the Video-in of a TV adapter or a modern graphics card. I think the VHS effect might be a filter applied to the video. I might be wrong, but it all seems a bit fishy.

The next big jump in score would happen if I got another tetris, but I never tried to get another one. I have a friend that achieved 4.5 million before me, so I knew it 4.5 was possible - before that, I was sitting at 4 mill. Shaving more seconds off the clock to get another tetris would be quite difficult.

The dying strategy is so you spend the least amount of time in Super Mario Brothers. The megapoints are in Tetris (note there is a 25x bonus for your Tetris score and only 1x for Mario), so you want to get to that game as fast as possible. You want to clear 50 coins in 1-1 in SMB without getting to world 1-2, as that slows you down. The fastest way to do this is exactly the strategy shown in the video.

in the tetris part....you passed up the opportunity to use the line piece to get a tetris, like 4 times in a row, and then you let the pieces get to the top literally 3 pieces away from losing and then you always got the line piece just in time. how could you know it would give you the line piece just then? that you would know "oh i'm almost at the top and heres a line piece, i'm not gonna use it just yet because I know i'll get another one" and you did it like 4 times. i mean, sometimes it could take 20 or more pieces to get a single line piece, and you always seemed to get the Z piece that was oriented the correct way, you always got a square just when you had the perfect place to put it. tetris is partly luck based, there should be an even distribution of pieces and it shows on the side the distribution that you got an almost even distribution but i have had games where all the other pieces ratio to my line pieces was 4:1 where like , i had 20 each of all the other pieces and only 4 line pieces i know the video looks "genuine" but I dunno, i suppose someone could pull it off with clever editing. if it's for real then more power to you...

LadyGenevieve The version of Tetris used in the Nintendo World Championships 1990 cart actually has a pattern to it -- the change was made to ensure all competitors had an even playing field rather than have the outcome be determined by getting more I-pieces within the time limit compared to someone else. The score you get in Mario determines where you start in the pattern and can also change some of the pieces in the beginning. So, if you try to get a specific score in the Mario segment, you can know what pieces will appear at what time.

LadyGenevieve I guess I'll say that memorization is just one piece of the puzzle. Getting the precise movements on the games takes lots of practice, even with the SMB portion. The controls for Tetris are a bit choppy at times, so even if you know where a piece should go, it's another story to get that piece into position with the most efficient movements on the controls. And it only takes one mistake on the tetris portion to throw the whole thing off. Thanks for the questions. :)

I received my tickets(5) from winning the Tetris competition the "Child World" toy stores were running at the time (scored 27,671 points in 3 minutes on level 5 on the nes version of tetris(the record in the tri-state area)) and I competed in the 12-14 year old group in Boston(though i was 11 at the time) in 1990. I ended up 5th out of the 10 contestants.

i know you wrote this comment 5 years ago, but it's been discovered that mario score was used to seed the tetris RNG. if you get the same mario score each time, you'll get the same sequence of tetris pieces. the player likely had the sequence memorized.

I was able to flip the car just right because you can keep your eye on the bottom right - when it gets to 6060, that's when you hit a tree. Search for any NWC video with a score in the millions, and you'll see this technique.

A few questions: 1. The temporary color changes. Is that from the NES or the VCR that recorded this? 2. In Tetris, at 3:29 and one other spot, the screen scrolls. Is that how it is on the VCR cassette? 3. Are the pieces that come down in this version of Tetris pre-defined or still random?

Andy Shick I think the answers for 1 & 2 are because of the VCR recording (#2 is definitely because of the bad VHS tape I used). The pieces are pre-defined, but based on the score in Mario. A different score on mario will give a different group of pieces.

NES Tetris doesn't game over like older variants if a piece is placed above the top on the sides. There wasn't any memory storage out of bounds either, so above the grid = lost forever.

@@sarysa Well, they are actually stored off screen and the weird thing is they actually still exist up there, they just don't fall down anymore. If you were to put a piece vertical and try to shift it over that way, it would actually be blocked by the off screen block!

At 5:00 in the video, I move a long bar all the way to the left, and I have always seemed to have a weird 'glitch' where the piece sometimes had a short 'hiccup' when moving all the way left. This perfectly explains it, cause the long bar gets stuck on that block that still remains. Nice going and I have no idea how you knew that!

Current record starting at level 9 is 269 lines. I agree with the other commenter: that is some damn balsy Tetris playing. Though I can see it becoming a little more conservative as the timer ticks down and the level goes up. Was that on purpose, to ensure as many Tetrises as possible?

@mikew72324 I concentrated on all Tetrises for the highest point value. There is the possibility that completing 2 lines at the beginning would affect the level increase sooner, and result in more points later in the game though.

How does the scoring system actually work on RAD RACER? Sometimes I get 12,000, sometimes I get 8,000. I don't know how it works. I like the Super Mario 1 trick. I will try that.

so heres a thought ive been having. I might get this game one day and try to contest this title. so ive been thinking about strategy but it sort of depends upon one thing... I heard once that you get the same peices every time based on something else in the game, i dont remember what but anyway. Would it possibly be slightly more efficient if you set a fairly high left side tetris well right of the bat then switched to right side on top... then even the lines would fall less far.... hmmmmmm
