I could swear I read one time that the Minus World had been patched out of the NWC version of SMB, although I just searched for the information and couldn't find anything about it. Perhaps I'll have to look into that at some point as well. :P

True, but you could potentially advance to Rad Racer from the minus world getting the 50th coin, which would be cool. At least I'd expect that it could still be triggered there.

@@DrBizz I almost asked which difficulty it would trigger, then I quickly remembered that it displays as "WORLD -1" so it's probably the easy one. With an out-of-range value like the minus world, though, I guess there's only one true way to find out.

@@TheGameDisplayno it isn’t I have an official Grey NWC cart ,and have accessed the Minus world in 1-2 ..The SMB segment of NWC is virtually the same as the original game ,except having the ability to start with 99 extra lives .

⁠@@TheGameDisplay lol no, they just removed some brick blocks, so the old method wouldn't work, but ppl came up with new ones. The proper patch possibility was explored at Displaced Gamers channel, but nothing like that was ever implemented by Nintendo

It's actually possible to get 127 lives in the original version of SMB1 (though the lives counter is buggy past 9), they modified the lives counter for the competition version to both A. display correctly past 9 and B. cap at 99 (the original version of SMB1 doesn't cap at all, meaning if you get more than 127 lives in that version it overflows to 0, meaning you'd game over the next death)

Thank you so much, Toader! It's so bizarre that they wouldn't have fixed the counter for even the main game, and it remains that way for SMB2J as well! If I remember correctly, I think you can get a 'crown' number of lives in NSMB2 as a reference to this quirk.

Even with the original competition time of 6:21, the fastest SMB players could get through the game within the time limit! But they'd have very little time to do anything else afterwards. Thanks for watching! :)

In an old version of BizHawk, the timer isn't used so if you get game over, it'll take you to Rad Racer.

There is a ricochet possibility in second lap of smb were u can collect about 27000 pionts and then a power up. Question : if you collect pionts this way how good score can you get? I don't own nwc cart obviously or a replica.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU FINISH THE GAME IN THE HARDER DIFFICULTY AGAIN?

My guess is the title screens have been patched to auto-start. So when Super Mario Bros. boots up, it goes to its title screen. It then auto-starts after a few moments. Likewise when you beat Super Mario Bros., it went to the title screen. So again after a few moments, it auto-started. I don’t think this has anything to do with the second quest, more of a happy accident. It’s also why the score and coins reset, because the game was started. I bet if you could lose all your lives, the game would auto-start again a few moments into the title screen for the same reason. That’s assuming you have enough competition time lose all your lives. It’d be neat to see it tried. This is my perspective as a programmer and what would be the minimal work required to the original ROM to get it to function for such a competition. Auto-start and a coin check hook. Yeah you could jump directly into the game but this way you see a splash screen.
