**Starts as a crib, converts to a bed, nice**
TL/DR: This convertible bed can begin life as a crib and work its way up to a toddler bed and daybed, maybe lasting most of your kid's life at home. That's great, but there is some assembly to deal with, and Graco's quality department let my unit ship with some detached springs, making that assembly a bit more complicated.

At first glance, this looks like the perfect solution for your newborn's bed. It starts as an adjustable crib, and later lets you convert it to a toddler bed, a full sized bed, or a daybed. It looks pretty nice and comes in a couple of different colors. So is there anything that keeps this from being perfect?
Well, buying kids furniture always comes with one big elephant in the room: are you going to be able to assemble the thing without going crazy? This bed only has maybe five major steps of assembly, and the number of parts is pretty low, so I found the assembly to be not a bad task.
The one thing that spoiled the experience was that three of the little springs that hold the bottom metal panel in place were detached when I opened the box. Getting them back in their sockets is not an easy task, I had to use a pipe wrench to be able to flex the metal far enough to get them back where they belonged. Graco should not let things out the door in this state. I imagine many people will just give up on getting them put back where they belong because the task is too hard.
It's really difficult to create good manuals for furniture assembly, and I credit Graco with a good effort here. In a couple of places there were nice touches - the instructions show the stickers on some of the pieces so you can visually see that you have the right side out.
In one place they refer to one side of the headboard as the "back", which is fine, but then when you open it the two pieces in question have a sticker that says "this is the inside". Graco, either say front and back or inside and outside, but don't mix up the two terms, this is confusing.
I really hate it when companies use styrofoam for packaging - it breaks into tiny pieces that stick to the furniture with static cling, and it's a nightmare to clean up. Using formed cardboard to hold things in place is a much better solution, but I guess styrofoam must be easier, and unfortunately that's what Graco used.
I'm happy with this crib, I have a newborn grandson that's going to be up here for a visit in just a couple of months, and now I have a nice place for him to get his sleep time in. I just need to find a mattress and some bedding and I'm set. When he and his sister get older I'll convert the crib to a bed and with luck will get many years of use out of it.
