I originally built this N scale loco 35 years ago, a DL&W 10-wheel camelback of about 1899. I used 2mm Scale Assn drivers (note the fine flanges and narrow tires) and gears, a scratchbuilt tender drive with a tiny Roco motor and simple but crude u-joints. Even though it has a very high numerical gear ratio (maybe 45:1) it never ran right.
I just overhauled it, and created a new tender drive based on the Shapeways PRR H9 tender underframe, Bachmann trucks which pick up current, a nice hefty Sagami 5-pole motor (fits nicely in the larger PRR tender body), a Zimo MX621 decoder for super-fine control, a flywheel which I turned on my Unimat III, and NWSL U-joints. Now even without picking up current on the loco, we have nice smooth running at all scale speeds. Now I have to add the rods, crossheads, leading truck, superstructure, and wheels, and then see if it will pull anything.
