Man! It's not surprising that refs make so many honest mistakes, and the fans understand many correct rulings wrong! Tough business! Thanks for this insightful video. I hope I'll memorize these principles so I can better appreciate the games and refs' work.

Because listen, this gather step is only an nba thing. Zero has no value and you can’t step zero times so what it really is is that you can step three times ONLY in the nba (and whatever other professional leagues that abide to nba rules) but it’s two times anywhere else. I think they made this gather step because two steps weren’t enough for nba players since it almost always takes three steps to dunk so they allowed it for entertainment purposes.
@mrmaker92
@mrmaker92 5 жыл бұрын
Shwabbit I don’t get it. What is so difficult about the rule?? After establishing control of the ball through either palming the ball, pinning it to the body, putting the hand under the ball or grabbing it with both hands, the player has two steps left. So, the step on which he’s is establishing control of the ball is his ZERO/GATHER STEP.

@@bballbreakdown NBA level step thru = travel read rule 4 and rule 10. The nba travel rule is defined in rule 4. Rule 4 says traveling is progressing in any direction in excess of what’s written in rule 10. Rule 10 consists of rules 10a -10h If you exceed 10a OR 10b OR 10c etc it’s a travel. This means when you exceed one it’s an auto travel, you don’t need to exceed all of them. Rule 4 uses the word limit this means there is a maximum amount of progress you can do and it’s written in rule 10. So if you exceed anything in rule 10 it’s a travel. Rule 10d says after gather while progressing, you are allowed 2 steps to shoot pass or STOP. When you upfake to do the up and under, you choose to stop your progression. You are at your PROGRESSING LIMIT. So when you step thru and stand on one foot, you have established a new spot on the court. This is progressing again. You are not down where you pivot foot is anymore. This is PROGRESSING again. This by definition exceeds rule 10b. For example. Stand at the bottom of a stair case. Dribble a ball and progress to a stop at the bottom of a set of stairs. Now pivot one foot in front of you onto the first step. Lift the pivot foot and stand on one foot. You are now standing on the first step. You establish a new position on the stairs and have progressed towards the top of the stairs. The same thing happens during an up n under. In short: 10b ALLOWS: progress 2 steps, pass, shoot, or stop. 10b EXCEEDING: progress 2 steps, pass, shoot, or STOP. Progress again. This is what happens in an up and under move. This exceeds the progressing limits set in rule 10b Rule 10d does not say I can exceed rule 10b in order to perform 10d.

Let’s say I catch the ball at the top of the key. Left foot is my pivot. I cross my right foot over and lift my left foot. Jump off the right and swing the ball to the wing. That’s legal? I guess the rule allows it but that getting called 100% of the time. Crazy how inconsistent it is
@bballbreakdown

High School? NFHS rules? If you lift your pivot before the ball is out of your hands, it's a travel, if it's to start a dribble. HS refs LOVE this call around here. It's a huge advantage, so it really should be called 100% of the time. I'm not so sure about if you pass, I think you should be ok lifting the pivot foot as long as it doesn't come down (like a shot). I agree, that would be called a travel 100% of the time around here. Maybe refs are anticipating the dribble? Sometimes the way it's called in your area is more important than the rule.
@andrewmojzer2337

Was hoping for a "hand is part of the ball" explanation, with the "high five" correlation, as well as in a rebound situation. If my hand is on the ball, and your hand pushes my hand to make the ball go out, it's out on you. Another one people always get wrong is the "hop travel." You can't jump off of and land on the same foot. Gather step is irrelevant. Along with the backcourt violation, I would have liked to see something on establishing inbounds. When the ball is going out, you can save it, step out, establish yourself inbounds again, and be the first person to touch the ball. Some people think you can't, others argue about whether it's one foot or two feet to establish inbounds.

5:14 confuses me a little. By FIBA rules if a foot is lifted it keeps its status until it is returned to the floor. Is this really different in by the NBA rules? I tried finding the rule in the NBA rule book, but it does not seem to address that issue. Until now I thought in this aspect it is the same rule in FIBA and NBA. Then it would be a front-to-back!

And he's right. That's a travel. It should, however, be tolerated if it's not blatant, i.e. if you release the ball shortly after changing the pivot foot. I really don't get what Ronnie is talking about. Changing pivot feet is illegal by definition. (granted, I'm talking from a FIBA perspective, but would be shocked if that's any different in the NBA).
@comet60fps79
@comet60fps79 5 жыл бұрын
Immabeadolphin... Here is the simplest way to explain pivot foot rules to ur friend.... You can lift you pivot foot to shoot/dunk/layup/or to pass as long as the ball is gone before ur pivot foot comes back down. However u cannot lift your pivot foot before dribbling. You must begin to dribble. Meaning the ball needs to be heading down to the court and out of ur hand before u lift ur pivot foot. Simple

Don't know if you've already made a video on this but I was wondering. If the CP3 high five with Harden's mum wasn't legal, would it be out of bounds if a defender is making contact with the ofensive ball handler while stepping out of bounds? I've see this happen at the baseline with no out of bounds call. What am I missing?
