"Coach" Nick and the return of the mummy (Ronnie Nunn) are full of shit. Specially his older videos. The amendment to the rules that introduces the "gather step" was created THIS YEAR, you can check. official.nba.com/new-language-in-nba-rule-book-regarding-traveling-violations/ Until now, the rulebook said you had 2 STEPS after finishing your dribble. Now with the gather steps, you can take 3. FIBA was faster than the NBA to acknowledge the new nature of the game and introduced the "gather" step in an amendment they made in 2017. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYvYZpx7bN6lhqs So what happened for years is that officials were no following the rulebook, probably under commands of the league commissioner, because the new rule allows more spectacular "selling" moves. Each time Mummy Nunn and "coach" Nick were talking about the travel rule in the past, they were basically talking bullshit. That's why he tries so hard now with all this new travel videos. Cheers!

OjoRojo40 you’re missing the point bro. The whole thing about the gather step is that you’re not “finishing” your dribble. Hardens “travel” step back is legal because his dribble isn’t finished when he stops dribbling (I know that sounds stupid but if you watch the video it should make sense)

3 years later and im still begging for a "perfect PG/SG/SF/PF/C" where you tally up what makes each position, then name the best or top 5 in each category, then name who are the top 3 players in that position, ever. Think it would be nice.

There isn't a perfect PG/SG/SF/PF/C, people prefer one or the other, once however there was a comment of type: "Pick your 100% win team" If anything I'd pick something like this: Curry, Nash, Jokic, Timmy, Shaq Why ?, why not ? = you have 2 extremely good 3pt shooters and you have 2 strong post-up players that are unstoppable in the paint to say the least, AND you got ANOTHER tall player crafty center to do the "trick" with lob passes and other things Maybe Giannis would be the better fit but kinda prefer it with Jokic, adding extra flare a bit :)

At the end of the day, it's all about the gather step and whether or not one considers it an extra step. Maybe it's just me but if I tried to pull that shit back when I was playing in high school or even now if I were to play a game of pickup on a local court, people would call me out for a travel even if they knew that it was legal in the NBA. At almost every level outside of the NBA, that extra step is acknowledged as illegal (as well as in foreign leagues and in FIBA/Olympic tournaments), in fact you could almost argue it's been imbedded within basketball culture itself. Of course when one is watching the NBA, one must acknowledge NBA rules and recognise that even if that step is deemed a travel at many other levels, it's perfect fine in the league.

@sihyuanwu5492

Basically what I'm saying is, for reasons unclear to me, some researcher can look into I guess, the game has evolved into two different forms: one that recognised by the casual basketballer, and one that is recognised by the professionals. Each with their own individual set of rules. So when someone who plays bball casually watches the best league in the world, it doesn't translate well to them because they're accustomed to a different set of rules

When i was younger and played basketball in europe and then started watching nba, it was confusing to me at first because i had not heard of this gather before. Im sure a lot of international fans like myself have a hard time with the traveling rules of the nba. On the other hand nba players seem to struggle going to international rules. I would hope to have the rules matched and bring the gather to international basketball aswell, so there would be less confusion going forward.

Yeah, exactly, people think a pivot foot is always to be pivoted, means never leave the ground and use it to jump out/off. Another issue I see commonly mistaken in my community is the gathering and then pivotting, mainly the gathering part like when using both hands or only one hand to go for layup after a running start.

Great series! Going back to Devin's comment about learning at the Ymca, I think it could also be that when kids are learning the game, its too difficult to understand these concepts so its easier/better(?) to teach them the basics of the lay up first. But at the same time, that is what is rooted in their brains and causes their misconceptions.

Great stuff Coach Nick! The NCAA and Federation are having trouble coming around much like they were against the 3 point arc at one time. The term "gather" is so essential in basketball. For now, Federation basketball refuses to use the term. Instead they use the term, "when the dribble ends." Point of education: after the GATHER the dribble has come to an END. Two different ways of saying the same thing. In D1 and high school basketball we don't see quite as much creativity; however, guys in the NBA work diligently to create new ways to enhance the game. James Harden on occasion gets away with an extra step; however, the majority of his step-backs are legal. As long as the dribble is still "alive" a ball handler can take as many steps as he wishes. In high school the training is not as thorough and officials many times mistake when the ball comes to rest- ended- is gathered. Today's game is about athleticism, timing, precision and skill. The future of basketball is here, whether the "old school" guys and gals like it or not! As a guy that once officiated at all 3 levels, it's refreshing to see us really taking time to really comprehend our game.

Here in Europe it's straight and simple: after balling, count two steps. In my opinion, this american rule is really difficult to apply correctly every time. I played for 5 years in a professional italian team and never got to a point where somebody could say "well, it may be travel but it depends on the referee". Allowing the so called "step zero" makes it hard to tell if the fraction of a second in which the player took the ball with two hands came before or after the step.

carrying is different from traveling, you can't carry the ball mid dribble my dude. If your dribble was still live and you never gathered and you're getting called for it, that means your hand is turning under the ball and that's illegal...either that or the refs are just making blind calls. @@OjoRojo40 The 2016 version of the NBA rule book, like all NBA rule books I've read it clarifies that the first step of the 2 non-travel steps players have begins "after gaining control of the ball." Any movement after an intended final dribble but before this official first step has commonly been referred to as a gather step for as long as I can recall. The NBA's new rule, as the link you provided states, "formally defines" what a gather step is. But informally it's been a part of basketball for a long time. (where i play fiba rules apply) for it to count as a gather step on a righty lay up, you'd have to dribble the ball the exact moment your left leg hits the ground, then you can gather the ball, right, left boom. at least that's what it's like here in germany. that's why i can't understand how it's not a travel when young gathers the ball and then continues to take 3 damn steps lol

dragged what foot?? if he has the gather, then the first step becomes his pivot foot, then he takes his second step, that original pivot foot then moves and before he puts it back down he jumps off the second foot and the ball is out of his hand. It doesn't matter if he doesn't necessarily pick his pivot foot off of the ground entirely it's more that he lost the technical pivot and the foot is in motion, he just can't jump off of the second and land with the ball in his hands or put his pivot foot back down before he jumps...idk how or where dragging his foot makes it a travel in this situation... I just rewatched this in slow motion to make sure I'm not crazy and now you seem even more dumb, the foot he dragged was the gather foot, which is inconsequential given the fact that he's stepping into his pivot foot as it happens. The right foot is the pivot foot, so the left foot can do whatever the fuck it wants before and after that pivot foot is established

@@DrSamGalactic The point he's making is that when he's actually moving, he has his hand on the side of the ball. He's still gathering until the very end when he puts both hands on the ball. Prior to that, he could legally still dribble/put the ball down. That means his right foot at the end is his pivot, and none of the other stuff before mattered even though it seemed like it was after his last dribble. He was still technically dribbling until the point where he wasn't allowed to dribble any more (grabbing the ball with both hands.)

Double dribble and palming are easy and quick to see when it happens on the amateur level, it's one of the the rules that is simple and straight forward to get, traveling is something you have to study (and like you guys said, most people do not read the rules. The movements (steps, gathering) surrounding possible traveling happen at faster speed and are also more subtle in nature. I believe the reason why there is so much confusion is that people just know the simple definitions of the traveling rule i.e. : 1. "more than 2 steps" = travel, 2. "going up with two hands and coming back down with the ball" = travel .(so they look at the jump stop/hop as a travel) 3. "taking more than one step while stationary (lifting your pivot)" = travel So when things happen at a slower pace then people apply the "taking more than one step while stationary" approach, just look at foot movement and most importantly people just simply count any foot movement as a 'step' so our eyes are seeing 3 steps and then we go back to assumption #1 which is "anything more than 2 steps" = travel. Also, people in the 80s and 90s didn't grow up seeing any of these moves and they taught their sons, daughters, nieces and nephews what they saw and knew from their own playing experience and what they assumed about the traveling rule then.

great vid, dorian lee's understanding of timing the gather is spot on. not sure about his move at 15.10 because of many steps while the ball is connected to his hand. the rule says you can take as many steps in between dribbles "while the ball is not in your hand" i wouldnt argue if it was called a travel. any thoughts coach nick? i'll have to look into this one.

My Thoughts - the pattern of dribbles to footwork is one of the best ways to fake out people and to create a variety of unique moves. This deals with the intensity of dribbling speed, intensity, and height (dealing with the ball) and with body direction and steps lengths (dealing with the body) - As far as the rules go; you put me on game with the initial dialogue. i didn't know that was the rules on what is a travel. There are so many small variations of finish moves (that are legal) that we haven't seen yet.

this explanation probably holds up in the nba, but in nearly all of these examples he ends the dribble before he thinks. he says its live still, but if he were to put that down its a carry. plus in live action hes taking an extra step that hes not explaining

1. I would be okay with refs not calling violations that they aren't sure about. In this case, the ref made the call just because it "looked like". It's their mentality that gets me. 2. The "spin step back" looks like it'll destroy your own Achilles tendon, better not do it too often.

I think the reason people argue wrongly is that they don't know the rule itself, some fans never heard or understood the term "gather step" before, I know because I was one of them, not until I had a team sport basketball class in college that I got super interested in watching the NBA and then actually reading the rules. All I know before that is "the handler can't take 3 steps after a dribble," which is suuuperrr vague and confusing and too general, however, that "rule" works for people who didn't play the game in the first place. I think it's an issue of misinformation in a general sense, rather than "when is the gather and when is the step" kinda question, which I know is only a concern when people who knew the rules argue about it, which is the point of the video. Almost all "travel" arguments in the youtube comments can be dispelled by the "gather step." As far as I know.

Trae young’s move was clearly clean in real time and condonable in slow motion. Spin step back is legit. The reason why ppl think he travelled on 8:31 is because he leaps and leaves his pivot after the jump stop; he does not pivot after the jump stop. You can see his pivot foot leave the ground if you have the basketball eye. Can you go over the “fake pro hop” @ 8:00 with an NBA referee? I heard in the rule book, you can not take off and land on the same foot for a gather. 13.25 I teach how to do that move legally, hop step from a crossover. Not so legal here.
@TheDudeFromKalispell
@TheDudeFromKalispell 4 жыл бұрын
Yup, you are correct. The fake pro hop is a travel in the NBA and since last year or two years ago in FIBA as well. In FIBA it used to be legal and there was a very common move called the Yugo, but it was made illegal. You can't, in ending your dribble, jump off one foot and land on the same foot.

I also think the issue people including myself have or have had is that in literally every league except the NBA Euro and College, all of these moves would be called a travel instantly by any ref out there. Ive played ball since I was 11 and if I've been called for a travel so many times on similar moves that makes it so much harder to look at these moves and realise that they aren't travels. .000001% go to the NBA and experience these rules being enforced the way they should be, when in reality the rest of the world will never play anywhere where these moves will be considered legal in practice

In any game of basketball, you are allowed two steps before travel is called. When a player has taken more than two steps without the ball being dribbled, a travelling violation is called. Travel can also be called via carrying or an unestablished pivot foot. If the pivot foot of a player changes or moves,...

I just think their explanation and what happens in live conditions are two different things. Often the moves/footwork/control of the ball are not executed nearly as cleanly and precise as they show it. I'd just rather them say this is the IDEA and the refs should allow more leeway for mistakes (for the sake of the flow of the game) instead of telling me how its all good.
