Here are 4 facts about the s65 out of the BMW M3 V8
1. The alternator disconnects during max acceleration
2. the s65 is basically the s85 V10 with two cylinders chopped off
3. the s65 V8 is 33lbs lighter than the s54 in-line six it replaces
4 . the s65 firing order is 1-5-4-8-7-2-6-3 vs. the typical bmw V8 firing order being 1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2

Entrepreneurs in Cars for #3 its good to say why it is lighter. It is lighter because the S54 is a cast iron and stronger block vs the aluminum block of the S65. If boosted, the S65 shouldn't got past 750hp or you may melt the block.

Hey thanks for doing this video. The S65 is one of my favourite V8 engines as it sounds amazing and its lightweight. I don't really care if the S55 straight 6 has more power and significantly more torque, better mpg etc because to my mind, it will never achieve the response, linear power delivery and sound of this outgoing V8. Don't get me wrong, BMWs are renowned for their straight 6s, I much prefer the S54 with the carbon airbox from the CSL than the current S55. Instead of doing the generic LS swaps, I'd love to see someone putting the S65 into a BRZ/86 one day. Anyways, sorry for the rambling, great work.

The firing order is because it uses a flat plane crankshaft as appose to a cross plane. Flat planes are more commonly found in super cars due to their responsiveness but they have lots of vibrations where as cross planes don't but are heavier

@@i8_oreo_948 the rod bearing issue isn’t that common if the engine is taken care of and it’s about $2,500 if you want to do it for peace of mind. I just got a 2012 e93 m3 and it’s amazing. Just do the required maintenance and if you are worried about the rod bearings get those done when you have the money. The only other “big” issue is the throttle actuators. Less than $2,000 to get that done typically. Every thing else from what I’ve researched and from experience is fine.

I’m very surprised to hear the alternator turns off- that could create a lean condition if you have a weak battery...especially dangerous for those who go forced induction.
@fwh79FOXR6
@fwh79FOXR6 6 жыл бұрын
The real question is... how much power does the alternator consume at WOT to warrant this set up? Seems kind of odd... but I'm not an engineer at BMW. Would be interesting to know the reason behind it.

It’s one of those things that doesn’t really matter, given the sensors and computational processing power available it’s easy enough to do things like that to maxmize performance under heavy acceleration at no real cost. That and minimising drivetrain losses elsewhere is a worthwhile effort that together is of significance, much like weight reduction efforts, seems trivial when looking at An individual component shaving a few grams off its weight but it adds up

You mean it has a centrifugal clutch? Disconnects lol I dont think so. S65 kind of a silly engine model number considering its the name of a Mercedes to. Not really considering how much the car costs, and the expectation of quality from a German manufacturer, kind of like the audi s4 v8 another big disappointment with its timing chain issues. Still a very cool car dont get me wrong. They got rid of that v-8 for a reason and it wasn't fuel economy.
@Sorry_ImTruthful
@Sorry_ImTruthful 8 жыл бұрын
+Brian Heiden sorry but the RB has only effected about 2-3% of M3's, and you can tell if a RB has spun(like any other car), plus you can change them out for peace of mind. But the actuators are what you should think about! And they went back with the I6 because of regulations and for the fact that they didn't want to take sales away from the M5 since it now sports a V8TT. If that wasn't the case? Then they could've just put in a NA version of the F10, and continued to compete with Mercedes/Lexus (although the new M3/4 still spanks the both of them).

#3- the S65 BLOCK is lighter than the S54 block, this has been documented. comparing longblock to longblock, the S54 is the lighter engine. #themoreyouknow
@TheBlackdragon936
@TheBlackdragon936 7 жыл бұрын
Kevin Do the only reason it is lighter is because the S54 is a cast iron block and the V8 is aluminum which means it can't hold higher hp with forced induction like the S54 can. If the V8 was cast iron as well, it would be much heavier.
@Fee.1
@Fee.1 6 жыл бұрын
The only reason it’s lighter is because it is built from lighter material. Is that how that works? Fascinating. Thanks for clearing that up. It’s impressive how you oversimplify the whole boost comment as well.
