Great video thanks guys. I cut around 50 meters firewood a year various Australian hardwoods and they’re hard on chains. Have to be good at sharpening. I always used manual file and roller guide in the bush and Oregon bench grinder for damaged chains (saves a lot of filing) since discovering Pferd CSX that’s all I use when manual filing. I Still use the grinder to bring back very damaged chains. The Pferd CSX and Sthil combi sharpeners are identical except the colour. I’m told Pferd makes them for Sthil, the Pferd version is definitely cheaper here.

The Oregon bench grinder is only useful in a workshop environment and no good when out in the field. The Oregon battery operated grinder only useful in the field if you take a 12 volt battery with you or you have a 12 volt supply in a vehicle, but then that means a treck back to your vehicle. An alternative to this is a battery operated Dremel tool for which you can buy chain saw grinders. For me the two hand files are best for field use. The Stihl easy file is very useful and my go to tool ( I have the three sizes in my toolbox) as it also reduces the rakes proportionately as you sharpen the chain, however the other hand file (again I have the three sizes in my tool box) is handy to keep in your pocket whilst in the field just to tickle the chain until you need to refuel when you can go over the chain with the easy file. Great demonstration. 🇬🇧🚜👍
@Ben-fk9eyАй бұрын
I've tried some different systems and gimmicks. So far the Husqvarna roller guide and the classic guide attachment for a file are my go to. Min thing being you can use them out in the field for a quick touch up if needed. That Oregon bench grinder did seem very nice, especially the self-squeezing of the chain. The main problem I have with them is having to take the chain and bar off and back on when you want to sharpen something. However, if I was running a shop and offered chain filling that would be a no-brainer.
@neilrice8714Ай бұрын
The Stihl easy file is the one I use the most apart from on very narrow chains (usually 4.0mm) as it doesn't always fit very well and can push the chain over slightly. Nice video keep it coming 😁

I love that Stihl easy sharpener system. I generally sharpen out in the field, and that little thing is a massive step up from the hand-file method. I’ve got the easy file and do like it. It’s great when in the middle of cutting. The one thing I do is to tighten up the chain far more than I would when cutting to sharpen. I found that helps keep the chains taught and stops it twisting so much. The twisting of the chain binds on the file, making it both harder work and end up with inconsistent angles. I’ve been looking at an electric bench sharpener. Price aside, which would you go for the Stihl USG, or the Oregon you had on test?

Work well tbh but that was on 3/8

Here in the USA are two different companies called Harbour Freight and Rural King that import a Chinese made sharpener that resembles the benchtop Oregon. Only retails $40 US though. I have used mine for four years with no issues and have sharpened probably 130 to 150 chains so far. You have to dismount the chain to sharpen it but I usually carry spares and change them in the field anyway. Faster than trying to sharpen a chain in the middle of cutting.

Useful video. Stihl 2-in-1s are the way to go if you're just sharpening your own chains. I’ve got them in all sizes. Stihl FG2 also great, holds the chain more rigidly, keeps a consistent 30 degree (or other) angle, but rakers are a separate operation, unlike with the 2-in-1. Years of observing and working on others’ saws tells me that most saw users simply do not know how to sharpen (or correctly tension) a chain. As a consequence, far too many chains, bars, sprockets…and saws have much shorter lives than they need have.

I think it’s worth mentioning that with the sthil easy file if you were to sharpen with it to or 3 times in a row you will end up taking the rakers down to low and having a very bity/ jumpy chain which for inexperienced people could be dangerous there good for a quick sharpen in the field but not so good for an every time sharpen
@cajunaggie98158 күн бұрын
I think I understand what you are saying but I would like to point out two things..... One, the guide rails on either side of the sharpener and the height difference of the files in the handles determines raker depth on the 2in1 tool, so if it is properly chosen for the correct file size and pitch on a full complement chain (not a skip tooth chain), that should not be a problem. It may however be greater than a chain's given cutter depth specs which would as you say may it very jumpy/bity. (Not discounting for worn files, bent guide rails, excessive downward pressure when sharpening, loose floppy chain, etc.. which may affect the end result) Two, If this is a concern, understandably, then you can remove the center file (the raker file) and simply use the round files every 2nd or 3rd time before filing the rakers again. The tool is quite easy to hold in actual use, and works quite well for me and what I do.

I’ve got the 620 and find it frustratingly difficult and time consuming to adjust. Because the chain is clamped automatically, there’s no way to finely tune what’s going to actually happen, when the grinding disc contacts the tooth. The armature has to be raised almost fully to unclamp the chain each time, before another attempt at fine adjustment. Together with the clamp’s mechanism annoying habit of buckling the chain upward and slightly out of the clamp. Which changes all the angles - it becomes a trial and often error process. And yes I’ve tried weighting the lowest portion of the loop but this makes little if any difference. Also, there’s just too much play in each joint+stops+swing linkage, which results in uneven and non-repeatable grind of every tooth in the loop. To anyone who’s contemplating the 620. Save yourself some money by buying the 520. All the angles and stops and probably quicker per chain, due to not having to guess where and at what angle the grinding disc will really contact each tooth. I usually hand file in the field, with a magnetic angle guide. At home I use a clamp-on guide, no guess work and quick. Only if I’ve got several chains, that over a period of time have been mashed, on hidden-buried nails/wire/stones. Does the grinder see the light of day. It’s just too fiddly to use. And even then, I find myself having to correct the grinder’s lack of consistency, by then hand filing each chain. 620 ~ grinder yes; precision NO!

I've been using the 2 in 1 for close on a decade. Hit the rakers with a flat file a couple strokes for a more aggressive cut afterwards. Takes like half the time it does to hand file. The bench grinders suck. They'll heat up the tooth if you're not careful, and then they're brittle and impossible to hand file. Just learn to hand file. If you can't hand file your own chain, you shouldn't be using a saw. Lots of you self titled tree guys skipped learning all the basics on your way to the top and it shows. Used to be; you learn to fell before you learn to climb and climb before you get to fly.

If you didn’t have the silly file guide on, the file would have fitted in the ego saw from the top of the file. I’ve had this on stihl chains

I don’t sharpen out in the field. I have the 620 in my shop and I bring a lot of chains with me and just change them out when they are dull.

Why not use a round file in a battery drill?
@MachineryNationАй бұрын
@@richardlewis5709 because a round file needs linear motion passing through the tooth. A drill would just spin it. Hope this helps.

I would have to be cutting 1 hell of a lot of trees to be spending my money on 1 of these gizmos

That 340 Husky needs a rebuild if it can't do better than that. Either that or the rakers are way too high.

She’s done a lot of work and has been rebuilt twice myself in her 24 years of service. Also a bit like triggers broom this one. Only the crankcase and main handle are original She may get another birthday one day.
