Went from a 462 to the 400c .Both brilliant saws ,no question.. it is sad to see the 400c discontinued in it's present form . I can see the new version does indeed have an advantage with torque improved and less weight is a no brainer. I will be able to take full advantage of both. I will see what the price is at my local shop when they are in stock

The 400.1 looks good , 300g lighter than the original too . Speaking with an actual arborist recently , he said he prefers the 400 over the 500i because when running a saw all day the weight difference left him less fatigued at the end of the day , the new saw would make an even greater difference.

G'day Gordon, That's nearly 1kg lighter than the 500i I can appreciate that as I'm not getting any younger. That's why I love my 400 if I need more I use my 660 which beats the 500 in big wood or as you know the hardest wood, If I need more it's the 880, Merry Christmas and all the best in the West 👍.

I've found that there's just about nothing you can do with a 500i that you can't do more comfortably with a 400. And if you really, really need the 500i because the 400 isn't powerful enough - you probably need a 661.

The 400c is choked back so much from the factory that it's ridiculous. I thought the 400c was a junk saw in stock form.... once ported, the 400c is nasty light saw. I'd like to see what the 400.1 will do, once ported. I'll probably buy one when they become available and machine/port it. 😂

I agree 1000%. The old 400c is not running at its peak performance. My 400c would blow away that older 400c. It needs an adjustment for sure. Unfair test to sell the new 400.1c.

You're right. I've never seen the old 400 bog down that much. It definitely needs an M-Tronic reset.

@Forestry_ANNA_2024 no I've been running the old 400c for about 4 years. Was extremely unhappy with it until I had between 10 and 20 tanks throught it. Then after regular mtronic resets which take a minute or two to perform it just got better and better. I found that a mtronic reset with changes in ambient temperature makes a massive difference. Lately if done a west coast bark box and airfilter with a few other mods and it's a absolute weapon. Certainly performs nothing like the old 400c in this video. I'm not doubting the performance of the new one, it looks like a good saw.

Nearly bought the 400 six months ago but when i got to the dealers the 500 was on special, $500 off, for the same price as the 400 so now I have 2 500s. I wonder when this gets to Australia. The torque upgrade is perfect for our hardwoods. I guess i need to start saving for another toy.

I do think stock vs stock that the new may be the way to go. I have a feeling that port vs port will be different and i am sure many porters out there make videos on this. We shall see. I just had my 400 ported and it is like a different saw. Very fun to run a 25 bar on now.

Your review answers some questions but leaves the issue of longevity/robustness unanswered. Can you put it in the hands of a tree service/ forestry worker for two months and get them to report back to you. Then serious customers for this saw might be convinced. But maybe Stihl would not let you do that?

It's not going to. All the lighter framed saws have cracked. They aren't nearly as durable as the ones before them.

It won’t be as expensive as the last 400, by lowering the cc to the same roughly as everyone else’s 60cc class saw it needs to be closer to a 362 price and I’m sure they lost the expensive mag piston to help lower the price.

Well that sure will give the sceptics something to think about! Especially because the new saw isn’t as broken in as old version so it has a slight disadvantage there. The new 400 definitely proved itself as a powerhouse in the 60cc class! 562 mk2 vs 400.1 would be a good shootout as well. I heard in Oliver’s video I think that they will have a heated version as well unlike the original 400. They better since cancelling the 362 had an Arctic version.

I much more prefere on MS500i over MS400C. Why? When I have calculated how much fuel per m³ spent MS400C and how much MS500i I found out that MS500i spent much less fuel. So I decide to sold MS400C. Now I am again looking to buy new MS400C to see how it will working. But I am little sceptic because they turned on acceleration and max RPM and on Husqvarna we know where they got problems and now they make few steps back.

Pretty interesting that lesser cc and lesser power in that new 400.1 outcuts original 400, now that means that this is very universal and relatively light but has some torque. Will be interesting to pit against a MS462, might be that saw starts to go obsolete when a much lighter saw can cut almost as fast as 70cc saw. Interesting times. Husqy 550mk2 goes bust because it weighs only couple hundred grams less but is way less cc and power. Medium Husqvarnas have to go dieting now😂

The closest things I could think to cheat this would have been: 1) on the hard wood, the 400 cut the harder dry checked end before the 400.1 made its cut 2) a dirty air filter on the 400 and a clean one on the 400.1 3) different fuel in each saw? *BUT* I doubt there's any intentional cheating here. So let's accept it... First in the real world, these saws are running closer than I thought they would. Even though I run a Bark Box to help the original 400 breath better for added torque, I also understand we're comparing factory spec saws. Lastly, an argument could be made that the 400 is "broken in" and performing at its best, where the 400.1 is not there yet. Bottom line, I love the original 400 and it's still a great saw. It's because of that, I'm having a hard time being objective here. If we want better saws, we need to be objective. We'll see what customers say.

come on the old 400 had not got a new bar on it we can see the paint off the bottom and tip of the bar on the first cut hence you didnt start it then cut the wood the film was stiopped and next image it was in the wood

Bold statement but fair enough. As good as the Echo 600S it’s not got anything on these, the new 400.1 is 1.3kw more and weighs nearly 1kg less than the Echo 600. From Stock I would say it pulls way better than the 600S.

@@MachineryNation that's probably true. But I can lean on it. I like the torque of that saw. It runs with a 27 on it and buried in red oak, it just eats. I also have a ported 600 and that's by far better. I'd compare it to a stock 500i on power. So for the price of the 600 and the port work is still better overall that the stihl imo.

I really like my 400, but the new one looks good too! Stihl makes great saws. At 4:52 minute mark, why are you prying it like that? Wouldn't it cut faster and be better for the saw components to use consistent pressure and allow the rpm's to stay high?
