Its a shame that josh has all those pedals on his shelf that will never get used on a recording or a song. The sad truth is that most of those pedals will probably never get played. He should start a pedal rental or loan out so those pedals make music and not just be background.

Hey Josh, could you guys do a video on noise? The types of noise that electric guitar players encounter, guitar noise, amp noise, cable noise etc And what can be done to mitigate it and/or if we should even worry about it? Also could be interesting to talk about what pedal reviewers do to eliminate noise in recordings vs what pedals really might sound like and so on. It seems like a really important issue that all of us encounter to some degree and I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I have the lumberjack and I love how you can create all sorts of unique tones with it. One of the things you can do is get a sound that sounds like clean and dirty together in parallel.
@springbloom5940

My first OD build was like that. It sounded like only part of the spectrum was distorting and the rest was coming through clean. So, it was thick and bassy with a resonant top end ring. I probably still have it on a breadboard somewhere.
@damekraft
@damekraft Жыл бұрын
yeah I have one too, that's exactly it. Depending on how you play the distortion can ride underneath the clean tone and then you can just hit the strings harder and the distortion can get quieter or louder depending on how it's set. Had a Lumberjack a few years ago, cost £35 New in UK, it worked well for my tone and was unique and sounded great stacked with other pedals, I really enjoyed using it until my pedalboard was stolen just over a year ago! I’ve been on the look out for another one since at a good price, until today I managed to buy another New one for £35 UK again, which is surprising as someone has a used one for sale in the US on Reverb for $200!!!! Cheeky bast**d!!! and as someone else said straight after the show someone listed one for $1000 cos it had been on the JHS Show. Glad I’ve managed to replace my stolen one again for £35 So many players have hated on the Lumberjack saying it’s the worst sounding drive pedal they’ve ever heard! Which is bollocks!! It’s because they expect to plug straight in and it to immediately sound brilliant, you should always work with any piece of musical gear to develop & create decent sounding tones that are personal and help you achieve your own individual guitar sound rather than wanting to sound exactly like your favourite past players which is just boring and not how I role when songwriting and playing my band. The synthesis of sound for me is a creative and fun process and what it’s all about editing any bit of gear so that you actually understand how sound works and what parameters when edited will effect the sound in different ways, understanding the gear you are using is really rewarding when producing music and will give you an overall better knowledge of how sound if you’re willing to actually put the time in to learn how things work and not just wanting to plug straight in and sounding like Hendrix, Page, SRV or John Mayer which has all been done and heard before, nice to have a bit of originality in my world.

There’s definitely some DSP under the hood, unlike the other ehx pedals in the nano series it doesn’t take a 9v battery. It think it was more about the logarithmic curve that the overdrive is based on, so if it’s not getting enough voltage I could see it doing some random funky stuff. The tc electronic dimension pedal does something similar, when the battery starts to die the chorus signal starts to randomly detune

I don't think I've seen any jack deville / mr black branded stuff on this channel before, it's about time! Jack is a really kind guy in my experience and an incredible technical designer. Mr black pedals tend to be simple but more expansive than you might expect as you fine tune controls. Jack's designs are behind the scenes more than most realize, I think he helped Nic Harris with DSP tape emulations and reverbs, and is a sticker about circuit board layout. I've had the EHX Hot Tubes Nano on my board for the last 5 years or so and it has been my best friend! It's definitely got a bit more tone to it than a traditional tube screamer, but you can get a decent bit of fairly clean overdrive out of it. Once you start getting higher gain out of it, the overdrive becomes nice and warm. Further, if you turn off the "Tone" switch, it starts to move into an OD/Light Fuzz territory. Simply put, it's super versatile for everything I need!

TUBULATOR! My Dad walked me into a guitar shop in Tucker GA in the summer of 1997 and said I could pick out a pedal under $50- I didn't have any and I was 14 years old. Mine broke sometime in like 2012 or something. Loved it!

Cheaper overdrives I've had or loved are: Pro Co Rat 2 (just run the gain low enough to the point where it just starts to clip), any cheap Fuzz Face as long as you can put it towards the front of your chain, EHX East River Drive, TC Electronic Spark Booster Full Size, DOD 250 Reissue (used).

My favourite overdrive is my Caline High Chief. Dual overdrive pedal that usually gets my tone to where it needs to go…and for less than 70 Australian dollerydoos!

Mr. Black puts out some great stuff - love the panatrem, the shepard’s end flanger, the downward spiral delay??!?! So cool. Love the sound of the vintage ensemble chorus, the ss echo chamber is sick with the big ol slider, tapex2 does cool stuff and obv they make a bunch of cool reverbs… And let’s not forget the DOOM Stick. Goodness.

This is the best 3 series ad Josh has done. A bunch of generic drives into an already dirty amp and 3 series delay the major focus.

Back in my first band, I got a Soul Food and the lead guitar player got himself a Lumberjack. I thought the logarithmic curve thing was so gimmicky in a way nobody in our group could really appreciate ... But there's no arguing that this demo sounded awesome. My current pedal setup is serving a much more traditional sound, with a TS and a BD-2 taking turns driving.

Carvin "Vintage Tube" 50 watt head and matching (in tweed!!) 4x10 cab for $100 off of Craigslist about 10 years ago. Guy knew what he had but he had two small kids and just didn't play anymore and wanted to get rid of it.

Yes!! Nice to see Mr. Black get some love! Such great pedals! The "Fwonk Beta Purple Funk Generator" is such a badass envelope filter. Thick, syrupy and subby as all hell. Pretty much the sweet spot between the DOD FX25 and the EHX Q-Tron. And the "Thunderclaw" rips! Both are absolutely killin' on bass

Been having my college "experimentation" days with Joyos. If there is a sound that seems like it might be useful, there's usually a Joyo interpretation that can be had for cheap. And even cheaper if you are willing to dig into off brands.

Fuzzy side of the Velcro goes on the pedal because the fuzzy side collects way more dirt and debris if it goes on the pedalboard. The hook Velcro side is way easier to clean and stays cleaner in the board.

Lumberjack is amazing, I've had one for a while. Unfortunately I busted it by plugging in 18v one time, so it's dead right now. I have to fix it, because seriously it's such a neat thing. I got it 30 bucks brand new, because before this video nobody wanted one. People... don't spend 100 bucks for this thing. It's good, but wait like 10 minutes and it'll go back down to normal.

I got my DOD FX50 for $30………………Back in 1984! Lost the box, owners manual and receipt years ago, but still have the hand drawn schematic that came in the box with it. The schematic also covers the brother to the FX50: the FX55 (red)😎

That Rust Driver is awesome, I’ve been wanting some one knob pedals because I’m a little tired of all the 5-6 knob pedals I have and I don’t own a true overdrive (bad ikr) but its a MIJ 50$ one knob overdrive. It’s perfect!

Man, I love this show. Josh has a great sense of humour, and he's extremely informative about how the pedals work which makes even a guitar noob like me understand and appreciate these works of art. Now, if pedals could be cheap in India. No cap, the JHS 3 series Screamer costs 16-17k. And it's the cheapest pedal by JHS. 😢😢😢 Hopefully I can earn some cash to get myself a good gig.
