I also thought just focus on learning spoken Thai without learning thai alphabet is enough. But this creates problems like not understanding a single thai word when see thai characters and also mispronouncing thai words. I advise all to learn thai alphabet first, there is no shortcut.

I've been learning thai for almost two months now. It's been a bit hard, but it's so fun to learn, I can't seem to "give it up". One thing I'm proud of, in these months of learning, is that I got to understand quite a lot of the alphabet + vowels. I exercise it by writing words in my language, but using the thai alphabet. So i got a grasp of forming syllabus, the sounds of vowels and the position of letters. Now I can read most words and phrases, but i dont know their meaning 😅😅 but that's another challenge I'm ready to go through. Also, since my first language is portuguese, the ร sound is just part of my day lol

If I'm honest, I am really struggling with learning Thai.. I created my own flashcards (yours are much better though, thank you 😊) to learn the alphabet, spelling out lots of vocab and create sentences.. It really helps.. But it's very easy to become disheartened and want to quit.. So watching your video has really helped to push me forward.. Thank you so much 😊

I've been learning Thai for about half a year and I can say that having learned how to read and write is my main source of confidence so far. Because compared to the alphabet, the pronounciation is a lot harder for me, both for listening (as soon as people don't speak both clearly and slowly) and speaking in way that Thai people will understand. I'm not really able to have a conversation, but at least I can read, lol. Even when I just say a single word, Thai people will often not understand me. For example, the omitted vowel sound in ลง is "supposed" (according to what I read) to sound like a short version of โ_ but when I tried to say it like this, I only earned a confused look. Saying it with a sound like the vowel in เงาะ is also not correct. The corrected version then sounded like a mix between both (?) that is very hard for me to distinguish from the second one, but apparently sounds radically different for a Thai person. Somehow, I feel like there are some secret vowel sounds that are not explained by the theory. 😅 I suppose that listening to a lot of spoken language like you suggested would help me proceed.

I can understand more than I can speak, but I guess this is just the natural progression of learning a new language …

Umlaut sound. We have it, sort of, in English, in words like "pure" and "cure". But we do not have a specific umlaut vowel. But in Thai it is everywhere, and it is very difficult to master. เครื่อง; เกือบ; เพื่อน; เลย. These are all hard for English speakers. Especially เลย. I hate it. It is used so frequently that I constantly have to twist my mouth in this unnatural position to spit it out, and I can never get it quite right.

Kru Jack, your English is good but you need to work on your pronunciation of words with ‘r’ (“are” sound) in them, as most Thais have problems with this sound …

Thank you for your feedback! I appreciate your suggestion and I will definitely work on improving my pronunciation of words with the "r" sound. 🙏😁
