Let other people have cats and dogs! Jungle Bob is here to show you that owning a pet reptile or amphibian is not as crazy as you might think. In this video, he tells you four cool facts about pac-man frogs.
There's a large number of frogs throughout the planet that are just break the mold as far as how they live, and pacman and pixie frogs certainly are my favorites.
Pacman frogs come from South America. They're called Pacman frogs for a really good reason. They look like Pac-man. They're nothing but mouths. They've got a giant mouth and a giant stomach. They're what we call sit and wait predators.
Frogs usually are in the trees, they're hopping around grabbing food, and stuffing it into their mouths. Frogs In the pond near your house have big, long legs and chase their food. All frogs are predators, but there's none like these terrestrial frogs that sit and just wait for something to come along. Of course, he's not too happy on this carpet here.
Their natural environment is to sit in very shallow water, preferably moss or something humid like that. They sit there all day with nothing but their eyes sticking out. The last thing the prey sees is two bulging eyes, not really sure what it is, and the Pacman opens his incredibly large mouth and makes a meal out of anything, anything, that sits in front of him.
Pacman frogs and their counterparts are wonderful in pet enclosures, but in nature they are consummate predators. Pacman frogs have made the cut in that they are now being bred in captivity by professional breeders. And when that happens, they lose their natural coloration. Their natural coloration would be something that's very cryptic and make it easy for them to hide, closer to my friend over here. But through captive breeding they force out recessive traits that change the colors.
We are seeing them, now we see strawberry Pacmans, apricot Pacmans, albino Pacmans, all different color phases. Same habits, same habitat, same way to keep them, but they are different and therefore much sought-after in the pet trade.
This is an animal that takes a very small enclosure. A 10-gallon fish tank is enough for an adult one. They'll get about the size of the palm of my hand. They are a lot of fun to watch and eat, as they just go bop, bop, bop , and they gobble up their food much like our friend from the video game, Pac-man
South American Pacman Frog.

Jessica Puglisi you’re clearly no frog expert either, as long as your hands are clean human oil won’t do anything to frogs
@jgpuglisi
@jgpuglisi 3 жыл бұрын
@@actionpants3138 you mean as long as your hands are clean AND thoroughly rinsed AND still wet. Wet hands would be better than dry if skipping gloves and if you recently washed your hands it’s EXTREMELY important you don’t have any leftover soap on them. This “expert” also touches them almost all over their body and keeps touching them throughout the entire video, handling without gloves is only safe if you follow the recommended practices (which I just listed) and you keep it BRIEF and touch as little of the frog as possible (usually only the underside of their body). Our skin is constantly producing oils, washing your hands doesn’t magically make that process stop it just gets rid of the worst of it until your skin produces more. Some people also have particularly oily/greasy skin and washing doesn’t get rid of it all. If you want to be absolutely certain you are not forcing your frog to absorb toxins, just use gloves. They’re not expensive, if you can afford the frog and their setup and their food and their vet visits I think you can afford a $5-10 box of gloves.
@actionpants3138
@actionpants3138 3 жыл бұрын
Jessica Puglisi they are also not nearly as susceptible to drying out from brief handling to creatures like lungless salamanders, if he were holding those with dry hands that would be an entirely different story but the pac man frog not only is much larger, has lungs, and can still breathe through its nose so it really is a non-issue, just wash your hands well and don’t hold them for a ridiculously long time like an hour

That albino would've tried to eat the little green one if it wasn't so stressed. You're handling them both very wrong, you shouldn't handle them at all unless you absolutely need to. You could display them in clear glass/plastic containers to minimize stress. And no, i wouldn't call myself an expert but i know a lot of these AMPHIBIANS, not reptiles..

What is this! This guy is not properly taking care of those frogs. They get stressed really easily and having them jump around like that is causing them real harm they are not like normal frogs. secondly they breath through their skin and the natural oils on human hands is harmful to them so grabbing them like that plus the stress is awful. They also need to be kept moist or they will die and they look pretty damn dry to me. This guy is a joke.

Leave off! This guy is a professional amphibian keeper if you didn't notice, and he of all people should know how to handle some frogs. I've got two little Amazonian Milk Frogs and I moisten my hands for them and handle them gently, but adult frogs aren't fairies: they can take a little bit of wear and tear. There are too many people that get all funny over the most minor things in pet-keeping.

James Humphrey Handling should only be done when absolutely necessary, this wasn't one of those times. I don't care who he is, I don't agree with him grabbing and holding the frogs like that and for that long considering the frog's sensitive skin, ect. Don't you find it odd that a professional would do it anyway? People get "funny" around pets because we have to consider what's in their best interest because they should be treated with proper respect and care.

This guy's reptile shop is in Long Island. It's disgusting. Last time I visited his shop, I saw several dead animals in his display enclosures. The husbandry is appalling and he has no right to tell you how to take care of your pets. He's an animal abuser. If you're considering introducing a reptile to your family, please do proper research. Visit forums, reach out to responsible owners. Understand that your decision is a commitment to give said animal a responsible, loving, and engaging life for the duration of that animal's life. This could be decades. This animal, especially in chelonians, can exceed your lifespan. Don't listen to this clown.

Just a quick tip, pac-man frogs have sensitive skin and the way you're grabbing them is hurting them. And they don't like being around other Pac-Man frogs because then we got a death match. So just saying to not treat them like in this video, I'm sure you meant no harm but now you know

frogs breathe through their skin, and needs to be in a humid environment almost every minute. i just bought one and he is doing great. i never touch him like this man is doing. DONT LISTEN TO HIM. they also get around the size of a dinner plate, not the size of the palm of your hand.
