I haven't done Syd to Bris on a train since the late 80's. Back then people would bring cartons or 6 packs of beer onboard and the conductors would turn a blind eye as long as they went to the rear most carriage (and didn't try to move forward again once drunk or rowdy). That rearmost car was a sight to behold though, you would have to step over people passed out in the aisle.

I live in Cairns and did the trip up from Katoomba NSW once by train years back when the sunlander operated from Brisbane up.Its a long journey from Sydney.!.Apparently the XPT from Sydney to Brisbane is closing down.Sad really.A delay in delivery of replacement trains by several years apparently.?!.Nice video.At least you had a bed and meals included.unlike economy.!
@Gary-vv5gt11 күн бұрын
To explain of “why this train arrive at 4am or some ungodly hour” it’s because QR has a separate gauge track to NSW and only 1 track in the qld system which NSW train can use but that also dual gauge which QR rail also uses for their peak hour service and they want the xpt to get out of qld before 5am so that why the xpt has to arrive at 4am and depart back to Sydney at 5am). Also explains of why there’s no overnighter from brissy to Sydney. You would have to get a coach to casino in NSW to do the overnighter. Likewise for day trip from syd to brissy. I’m sure if is wasn’t the qr douchbagery they would make the arrival time and departure more reasonable and also do a second service (of reverse timing) as well without terminating at casino.

😁I travelled from Tasmania to Hong Kong. I was the project manager and civil engineer. I worked as an engineer in Singapore from 1999 to 2005. We designed and constructed twelve-kilometre tunnels with two boring tunnel machines and five stations. I also managed 160 engineers and architects. I have been a contract engineer since 1975, Constructing sewage and water treatment plants from Melbourne to Cairns. I have enjoyed every minute of my life. Kate's wife is a well-known interior designer, and Kate was introduced to Grand Design in Australia-the ideal partnership for 50 years of marriage of the year. I applied to NASA in 1974 to be an astronaut in the Apollo Space Program. I became an engineer.

The reason why there's no direct train from Sydney to is due to difference width of track in different states. Meaning a train would have to change all it's wheels to make it all the way to Cairns, so a break in journey was the only way.

There are some long-distance "luxury" train travel routes in Australia but the north/south routes on the east coast (with many stops) are comfortable and compete favourably with airfares.

I understand it has to be that early due to conditions set by Qld Rail. The other Sydney Brisbane XPT can’t cross the border. You have to transfer to a coach for the Queensland part of the journey. Ridiculous really.

Calling a sleeper train a train that starts and finishes in the middle of the night is a misnomer.
@chnet96811 күн бұрын
Agreed. As long as that's the final station, they should allow passengers to stay there longer. Say the Caledonian Sleeper in UK allows passengers to stay up to 8AM when the train arrived Edinburgh or Glasgow. And if you're to Fort William, then you can stay up to 10AM.

Due to qr rail being annoying, the xpt can’t come during peak and have to leave before 6am, so it’s arrive at 3/4am and leave around 5am due to layout of tracks.

ah its true our trains are often very bumpy... its coz the tracks arent properly looked after I bet
@MrMorjo4 күн бұрын
Yes trains in Australia that are not on new railway lines are very bumpy. Most rail lines in Australia are over 100 years old and need upgrades. However, the cost would be too considerable to do this work considering how large Australia is with its small population. Hence why we don't have luxurious trains like in Japan with its highly dense population.
@bookwormfaith3 күн бұрын

The xpt experience is like arriving in a jail cell. But no jail would serve that food. 4am arrival... What are you supposed to do? Nothing is open.
@Gary-vv5gt11 күн бұрын
It’s due to layout of qr rail which only 1 track I believe is used for standard gauge… while the rest in qld is narrow gauge… but the flaw is that is also a narrow gauge as well which will affect qr servicing…
@TheTruthIsFiction5 күн бұрын
The best way is to drive or cycle, as a last resort by bus stopping in many towns along the way. You won’t see much on a train and it’s a waste of money.
