I actually asked my therapist about this and she suggested that the emotions are essentially a role. Like for example, I asked how Joy could get sad when she's supposed to be the embodiment of happiness, and my therapist said that being "Joy" is essentially like a job title, so she's still able to feel other emotions outside of the one she controls That still begs the question of if they also have tiny versions of themselves controlling *THEIR* emotions, but it's probably best not to get into that-
