Sorta. They're all simple exothermic chemical reactions (give off heat) but, they might get up to unsafe temperatures. Normal hand warmers don't go much above 70°C, or even up to that. It's easier (and in some of these cases cheaper) to just go buy some hand warmers ://

DO NOT PUT FABRIC TAPE INTO THE MICROWAVE. Never, ever, microwave anything that you don't for sure know can go into a microwave. Rice can burn! Use bird seed instead (wheat for example) - and only heat the package on low temperatures! I have burnt several of sewn seed bags meant for warmth with too much heat or for too long. Double bag the seed when sewing the seams, no pokey seeds or escaping seeds.
@gavinp65657 жыл бұрын
um, rice can burn, like all foods, but so can bird seed? if anything, rice is less prone to burning than bird seed...
@lexa88997 жыл бұрын
Rice can burn if you put it in the microwave for several minutes straight. If you heat it 30 seconds by 30 seconds it's fine (plus you usually don't need more than 1min30-2min) But I agree with the fabric tape.. they probably should sew the fabric instead
@alixnorman73897 жыл бұрын
Agree on fabric tape - you're ASKING for trouble if you put that in the microwave! I make these all the time (with corn or flax seed, which smells better than rice I find) and sew them in double bags as suggested above. DO NOT USE TAPE!
@VARY787 жыл бұрын
It says Microwave 30 seconds not 3 or 30 minutes. I doubt it's going to dangerously burn in 30 seconds.

Hand warmers reminds me about the time i went to this field trip. We went to calwood 2 years ago during February. It was soooo cold, it was snowing so much but we had to go outside, and our teacher got us hand warmers. At the first day of hiking in the morning, I was very tiny and I was soo cold and it wasn’t easy to walk-in this deep layer of hard snow and all of my friends were able to catch up with the other while I stayed kinda far from the others with my teacher who was very helpful. The second day was better. I was able to catch up what the others. At night we saw very pretty stars and the sky somewhat looked like a Aurora, it was soooo pretty I wish I had a phone and took pictures. I stayed in a cabin and shared a bunk bed with my friend. At the first day, I couldn’t sleep but at the second I slept pretty great. It was a great experience.

WHAT?! That last one is cool! I saw one in the Dom tore and could never find it again, but now I know how to make it! Edit: idk y people are hating on these diys. I get people don’t have all the supplies. I get it. But I think it’s cool that nifty/buzzfeed make diys that are long lasting and not temporary. I love that about this channel. You don’t have to watch it if you don’t like it.
@FirebirdPhoen1x6 жыл бұрын
Handwarmers in Germany are reusable. They are plastic bags with a gel solution inside and a small round metal plate inside. You bend the plate and the solution hardens (the process looks like it freezes) while generating heat that lasts for a while. When it has cooled completely you can simply put it in boiling water until it's liquidy again and use it again. You find those everywhere for 1€. I have also seen a small pocket heater that uses fuel. Haven't owned one yet, though.
@justinw17652 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's the one they showed at the end--the sodium acetate trihydrate. Wonder if this could be scaled up to use as a home heater at night? Basically set up a Solar heater to regenerate them during the day, and activate them at night again.
