One tip that has helped me with tracing is to print the original image in a lower opacity setting, essentially imitating using tracing paper on a lightbox, but with only a single sheet of printed image. Then I can trace overtop of the original and focus more on the execution of the linework. My linework has greatly improved as a result. Just throwing that out there in case people don't have a lightbox or don't want to bother with multiple sheets/taping the tracing paper down, etc

Hello again Chloe, I just want to say again how beautiful your work is and I can tell how absorbed you are in the work. It’s wonderful to have any activity in one’s life that takes one into another realm and makes the passage of time almost meaningless. Another thing that strikes me about this black and white rendering is how similar it looks to scraperboard . I wonder if you have ever tried it …..if so,I’m sure you are equally adept at making white lines,as opposed to black ! Lastly, could I ask what type of ink do you use? Regards from England x
@longstrideillustration11 ай бұрын
Thank you for the kind words. I have indeed tried scrapeboard. A lot of the master I like to study have an engraving-style. I use a Speedball super black india ink, it's a pigment-carbon mix which is great for drawing with dip pens. You can find the tools I use on my website: longstrideillustration.com/tools/

I’m surprised to see Gustav Dore missing from this video. But f booth is my favorite. Who is P. Harris?
@longstrideillustration Жыл бұрын
True, I featured only a few of my very favourite pen & ink heroes in this video. In the description I share a Pinterest Board where I have began adding more of my personal favourites, Doré is certainly amongst them. Philip Harris is an Illustrator & Print Maker based in the UK - his work had an influence on my choice of subjects for inking. The key takeaway from the video is that for studies, I found it more inspirational to first study the master that I admire most, then later move on to the "Classics" for further learnings.

Thanks so much -- I'm finding your videos very helpful and inspiring. Do you know if the speedball India ink you use works well with watercolor paints and alcohol markers after it's dry? It gets mixed approvals on amazon for these mediums. Thank you.
@longstrideillustration Жыл бұрын
I've used it for ink washes and combined using alcohol markers... it works, in small doses. I'd venture to say that for mixed media the acrylic-based inks would perform best. Also, the paper makes a difference. On hot press paper, the pigment-based ink performed okay, but wasn't awesome on bristol smooth.
Thank you for your time and involvement to create and share such great content. All these are great reminders and excellent tips for both beginners and people who wish to improve their craft. Keep on the good work! Wishing you the best.🙏🏼 Cheers 😊

I'm wondering what paper do you recommend for big A3 size illustration with ink ? I know about the manga papers like deleter, used for their smooth surface but it's quite small and has the brand name printed on it wich I dislike, do you know a larger size paper that could fit for ink illustration ? much love, your teachings are great.

Do you think pen and ink is harder to master than painting ? cause it certainly looks like it is.
@longstrideillustration7 ай бұрын
It's hard to say since I'm not a painter, however I think that spending time mastering the fundamentals, especially shading and lighting is useful for any medium. I used to teach alpine skiing to adults at Whistler Mountain (Canada) and instructors would often get asked which is harder and we'd answer: "skiing is easy to learn but hard to master, snowboarding is hard to learn but easy to master" and maybe art mediums are like that as well.

Really enjoyable as always. I don’t think ‘cheating’ is a fair term, any craftsperson or artist will choose any tool or technique to achieve the result they are after, to save time or improve muscle memory….artists can be a bitchy lot eh.
