4 Effective Submissions for White Belts with a Weak Guard in BJJ

In today's video I show a fundamental submission series from Full Guard that I learned as a BJJ White Belt that was very helpful. The position I teach in this video has also been helpful to many of my students who are a bit on the bigger side.
The submission series starts from what I call from Diamond Guard. In it I show 4 submissions.
- Diamond Guard Armbar
- Regular Armbar
- Triangle Choke
- Oma Plata
I've also found that this series is really useful for bigger guys like me who don't have super quick hips and legs.
Hope the video is useful. Thanks for watching.

Something about getting stacked and choked makes me forget any training. I’ll add this to the list of thing I know but don’t remember in time. Rolling for me is like having a conversation and thinking of something clever to say 5 hours later.

Yeah, Ive learned you must stay calm under pressure. Kind of need to train a marine like mentality. Strangely! Competitive shooting games help, keeping calm when I get run up on and doing what I need to do actually translates to real stress situations! Cold baths in the dark with eyes close. Keep your heart steady in the situation and you've mastered it since dark+cold water forces a survival response, if you can be calm then, you're mostly good to go.

this is perfect explanation, been having trouble finishing triangles but this will help a lot, was rolling with a guy that is about 250lbs today and im small 5'9 160lbs and just couldnt quite close the triangle after seeing this i realized moving my hips was what i was missing. and the diamond guard step helps a lot with breaking down all these other subs too

That was super useful. In my first class earlier this week I found myself in full guard after failing a back take and I had no techniques to try so I just held on for dear life in my guard and kept attempting to roll him over and get on top but he was too well planted. All I really had going for me was size and stubbornness but at least I was able to survive

Will you please do a video for the brand new white belt with zero experience please and what they should be focusing on? I just started 4 days ago. I just had my third class ever tonight and I am feeling overwhelmed and somewhat lost. I do not know how to organize my learning if that makes sense. Also, when we do drills its like it goes in one eye and right out the other. I swear I can watch a move performed 50 times and still not know how to do it. Very frustrating. I tried to follow your advice from another video by trying to hold guard and top position as long as possible. I rolled with a purple belt tonight and got smashed. He was a great guy and it was a great experience and he taught me some stuff but I thought I had came in somewhat prepared and the wheels came off instantly. Thanks Bro!

Idk how you train, but at my gym our coach will show us a move and make us practise with a partner for 10 or 15 mins and then bit later have us spar etc. 5 mins at a time and then 10 sec break. Im pretty new to MMA and also am finding it a little difficult getting all the movements and angles correct, but maybe ask your coach afterwards if you have one for some help. Or ask another guy for some tips etc. I wouldnt say videos are the easiest to learn from. Better to try it with a partner.

Hey Chewy, so I’ve been at my gym since October of 2019, eased in and now I’m going almost every day we have class. However, in that time we’ve never drilled submissions, only fundamental type stuff, reestablishing guard from side control, swing singles, etc. There is only 1 class so no beginner class separate from advance class. We drill the same 1-3 variations of a movement Monday-Saturday (off Fridays) and go live for half the class if not longer. I asked tonight if I was missing something having not learned any submissions but going live to submit every night and got the blanket “keep showing up.” Is this normal?
@bookofdaveandsteve
@bookofdaveandsteve 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's super normal. Three months isn't long. Getting grips and position is hard. I'm a year in (though I train less often than you do) and it's what I spend most of my time thinking about. At the start, learning submissions helps you to realise how important position is. You'll try to apply them in a roll, they won't work and then you'll ask why - position every time brother.
