In the case of the Fitzgerald, the US Coast Guard is a government agency and government agencies tend to favor big money. It's easier to blame the deceased crew since they can't defend themselves. I wonder who the owners had to buy off and for how much to get the rules relaxed so they could overload the ship.

All This time, the families and friends of the man who drowned on the Fitzgerald have been under the information that it was caused by something. Maybe they didn't do like leaving those huge deck doors open. I know I'm not using the proper language, it's still all very sad. I'm sure they didn't wake up that morning and say let's go out and have trouble today. God bless you if you're on a boat

I always thought the Fitzgerald was driving forward into the waves, not in a following sea as this shows. Is it true they were taking the waves over the stern?

He's a coward anyway and stopped them from checking out this one awe ship because he was afraid it would collapse if the drone ran into it??? They spent a ton of time and money just to have him chicken out!!!

The Fitz bottomed out in the shallows of Caribou Island, cutting open the hull, which allowed it to take on water, than after almost 4 hours of taking on water a large wave came up from the stern section driving the bow into the lake bed & causing the ship to snap in half! Thats how the Edmund Fitgerald sunk! The way they tested the hatch covers in this "documentary" is ridiculous- no hose spraying can match hours of 50+ mph winds & 30 ft waves crashing down! & I can't believe they didn't interview the only person who saw The Fitz & talked to Capt. McSorley that night- Capt. Bernie Cooper of the freighter Arthur M. Anderson! This is hands down the most ridiculous & insulting "documentary" about the Fitzgerald ever! What a joke!

They showed Cooper talking about the waves that night - but couldn't interview him as he died in 1993. They also built a scale model to test the wave theory and then used the weather data in a simulator (like a flight simulator for ships). Short of rebuilding the ship and sailing it in the same exact conditions as when the Fitzgerald went down...I'm not sure what more they could do to figure out what really happened that day.

@joejankoski8471 I thought this show was done back in the 90s- but still they never took into account what the only eye witness said & a model in a wave pool isn't that accurate. McSorley stated he had a list shortly after 3pm that day after passing the shallows, & in that storm he never would've heard it hit bottom, but it's clear from that point on he was taking on water. The Coast Guard & Insurance company for the ship came up with the easiest excuse possible to blame it on the hatch covers & the crew- the Insurance company doesn't have to pay out & there's no mystery in that for the CG to solve, easy peasy! Those men were experienced seafarers going into a storm- there's no way in heck they didn't have them tied down properly! I just think they did a hack job on this episode & no REAL investigating! Which is an insult to the families.
