I’m getting pretty close to investing in a beast grip and DOF adapter and seeing what I can do with real lenses attached to my iPhone XR. The allure of a DSLR is appealing, but I think there’s some real promise in the smartphone side. Great video. ❤️

Just when I thought the vid was useless basic info.. the hdr thing saved my day! The shutter speed slider didn't work... yet the iso was perhaps a combined slider controlling both iso and shutter. Works perfectly with her off! Thanks! (Galaxy note 10+)

Thanks for the nice tips! Extra questions for anyone that might know FCP for iPhone, since probably some FilmicPro and/or LightRoom gurus here :) : 1) Any way to lock the shutter speed such that when a shot is over, the shutter speed setting lock will not unlock and return to auto shutter? 2) When I offload clips from my iPhone 13 Pro (iOS 15.6) to my Mac (OS 12.4 Monterey), Finder displays the correct date/timestamp, but once I then import them in to LightRoom Classic (version 11.4.1), LR displays an errant date/timestamp that is 7 hours later than the correct timestamp (i.e. Finder displays correct timestamp of 1:49pm, while LR displays INcorrect timestamp of 8:49pm). This happens whether I brought the clips from iPhone to 13 directly via LR's Import function, or from first Airdropping from iPhone to computer and then importing those files already on computer into LR. Anybody know why and/or how to fix this? Thanks!

6:48 - thats me! Hehe. Yeah DTM (dynamic tone mapping) is a real thing in iPhones as you can see from my head shot. I use an iPhone X and apparently is a lot less aggressive in the iPhone 11/11pro range. Hope they open it up to FilmicPro/Moment/Beastgrip etc to turn off. Would be so handy.

The v2 of the Moment telephoto lens, the 58mm is quite good and has a touch of the shallower DOF you mentioned with your lens.

Hi Simon! Thanks for your videos. I've used Flimic Pro with different gimbals. Ever since I got the new Zhiyun Smooth 5, I've noticed that the footage is a big shaky and jittery. It's not due to the bounce in my walk cuz the shakiness is less noticeable using the DJI OM4 or Feiyu G6 Plus. I believe that ZHiyun Smooth 5 is less stable than the other two brands mentioned. Have you noticed it? In addition, the footage shot through Filmic Pro is less stable than the native camera app despite the many detailed functions offered in Filmic Pro. I've been torn cuz I'd like to use Filmic Pro and all of its great functions, but the very basic and the most important function by a gimbal is to generate the smoothest possible footage. Do you have any suggestions for me to try as far as settings etc.? Have you noticed similar issues with the app/gimbal? Your expert opinion will be tremendously helpful! Thanks in advance! P.S. I have stabilization on Standard in Filmic Pro.

Hi Simon, me again ( locked down in Auckland! ) Just re-watched this vid and, being an iPhone XR owner, wondered how you overcome the issue re not being able to disable edge enhancement and HDR?

hi Bruce! Nothing you can really do other than use software to remove the sharpness (like in Premiere Pro). You can turn HDR off in your settings but the iPhone will still apply dynamic tone mapping - nothing can be done to remove it

Didn’t get any of these options on my iPhone 11 Pro. Noise reduction can be enabled in the left color menu but only on frame rates lower than 30. but I also get the hdr error in low light conditions ( flickering even with fixed iso ) and it would be nice to have the option to disable this feature.

Simon, for the iPhone, under settings->camera you can turn Smart HDR off. I don’t know if this will only turn it off for still photos or turn it off completely. I’ll test it over the next day or so and let you know. I didn’t realize you were on the Jedi (Android) side of mobile film making...come over to the dark side my friend 😂.

Which Android phone is best for with filming Pro for shooting videos low light ?

its a tricky question because there are pros and cons with new devices. For example, Samsung S20 range has bigger sensors which makes them better for low light, but Filmic can't currently access the telephoto lens. As far as the phone goes, you want the ones with bigger sensors, but how compatible they are with Filmic is the tricky part

Unfortunately, Apple haven't allowed access to edge enhancement for 3rd party apps (yet). But I still think it's worth knowing this is happening, even if you can't switch it off. You can also add softness (negative sharpness) in an editing program like Premiere for example

even though you can't switch off edge enhancement using iPhone (yet) I still think it's worth knowing the iPhone is adding sharpness, if you're attempting to get the softer film look. Also, with the HDR stuff, again you might have encountered some issues with Filmic conflicting and creating glitches and be wondering why this is happening. So I recommend understanding these 4 settings, iPhone or Android :)
