A brilliant video covering a critical issue for smartphone videographers. I have a Samsung S20 & after watching another of your videos, use McPro24fps. I have Filmic Pro & like its User interface, but there are far too many limitations for Android users. I also use the Neewer 37mm variable ND filter & clip, which is great. Sadly it won't cover the wide angle lens so I got a step up ring 37mm to 52mm & bought a K&F variable ND filter which is sort of OK. Sadly the clip is now too large to balance my S20 on my DJI Osmo Gimbal. With counter weights it is also too heavy for the gimbal. I totally agree with you that it is far too easy to accidently move the clip. The biggest problem I have is that on the brightest settings on my phone, I still can't easily see the screen in bright sunlight to adjust the manual settings in McPro24fps. Have you any solutions?

Just a question, I just recently got my neewer 67mm filter sets and tried the CPL filter, but when I tried twisting it to see and test some shots, glare is not changing. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Appreciate the help 😊

'Neewer' pronounced '"Newer"? Oh god. I hate it when manufacturers do this. It's like, well, who remembers 'Sirius'? Pronounced "Serious"? Oh come on! It's also like 'Computer Exchange' who prefer to refer to themselves as 'CEX'. 'Welcome to Sex online' they chirp... CEX prefer to be called 'Sex', but you know that a 'C' in this context is not pronounced as an 'S' as that is grammatically incorrect, at least according to the English language. I amuse myself by referring to CEX as 'Kecks', because that is not only how CEX should be pronounced, but more to the point, your 'kecks', are not sex, but your underpants! I know, we're in lockdown... Right, and that said, ... Rant over. Back on topic, and worth mentioning here, that the larger (cheaper) variable ND filters, if you can fit them, perhaps using a 37mm to 52mm step-up ring are far superior than the smaller ones as in the middle of the filter it is far clearer, and therefore the resulting image is far sharper- one thing that inexpensive Vari-ND filters suffer from, being a bit (very) soft and they also vignette easily. So you don't have to buy crazy expensive filters as the smaller your lens diameter ratio to larger ND filter size/thread, the better your image quality. Great videos btw Mr Horrocks. A great resource to procrastinate over while being hemmed up inside during a pandemic. Keep up the good work.

@@SiHorrocks Great video (as always), and we certainly do have the same issues with the wide lens unfortunately. When I opened the box and saw the size of it I was filled with hope, and then to discover the fairly decent aluminium construction, I was sure I was on to a winner. Alas, it's not to be this time. Think I'll just have to save up for the Moment wide lens (my boss bought me their nice wooden backed Photo Case with 58mm Tele for my birthday in November). I didn't realise Moment did a 37mm adapter, so that is a MUST have. I wish the tele I have, had a thread on the front though, as I have tastefully bodged / used blu-tack to attach my other VND to it. It works perfectly, but I don't want anyone seeing me using it! I may upgrade the blu-tack to black Sugru, but we'll see. Looking forward to your next instalment, happy fathers day :-)

There is a new app for filmmaking "PROTAKE - MOBILE CINEMA CAMERA" is it better than FIlmic pro or not? Please make a video.
@SiHorrocks4 жыл бұрын
To me it looks like Open Camera with a nicer UI. I notice it says 25fps is converted. So it's shooting at a higher frame rate and converting to 25fps. Also when I tried other android camera apps, the only one that could film at 25fps was Filmic. I believe Filmic must be shooting at actual 25fps because it fixes the artificial light flickering in Europe. It was converted it would still strobe... I can't imagine why this new app would be better than Filmic Pro

Hi Sat Pandora. I have to be honest, I haven’t heard of this new app, but I did invest in the Filmic Pro and Filmic Remote bundle just a couple of months ago. I’d been using Promovie for the last three years and loved that app (very low cost to remove watermark, £2.99 I believe). However, if you can go to the £15/£20 for Filmic Pro, you definitely won’t be disappointed. It truly is a fantastic app, and as Age Of Rogerio pointed out, the access to tutorials is something to be considered too.

I find your videos really helpful and this one is no exception. I'm usually a fan of Neewer products but I got a surprise with their ND-2-400 clip on variable ND filter. It doesn't go to 400. It's meant to reduce light by between 1 and 8.66 times but at the highest setting it reduces it by between 1 and 4 which it makes it useless for video, even in winter sun.

I also got this same filter set recently and I like it. It is inexpensive and not the greatest quality but I think it's a good starter set. I have another question, I have the opportunity to get a Samsung Galaxy S8+ and I have discovered the limitations that there is no exposure spot circle and it seams that the ISO will not go below 200. So would this still be good phone to use for filming? I have been using FilMic Pro with it.

hi there. I used a S8+ with Filmic for the first episode of Silent Eye and I don't remember that problem, with ISO and exposure. But I was using the Exynos version, so may that is different. Make sure to switch off HDR. Personally I think the S8 and 9 are great for filming, with dual aperture which no other phones have and seem to work well with Filmic

Hi! I have a question. Is there any notable benefit to using a 52mm filter set up over a 37mm? I am looking to move away from 52mm filter adapters to lenses that already have a 37mm thread and then use 37mm filters. Will I see a difference in my result? What should I be looking out for?
@fuglstad_explores2 жыл бұрын
As long as your lenses filter ring is no more than 37mm, it shouldn't be a problem. There is no real world difference in using a lens that's larger than the diameter on your lens.

I actually got up early this morning to go shoot the sunrise from a bluff overlooking a lake close to our town. The ND I had on, ND4, wasn’t nearly enough. Towards the end I stacked an ND8 and ND16. Huge difference. However, I was using the Moondog Labs 1.33x anamorphic and the filter adapter. With the filters stacked...the sun light reflected off of the rim filter and could be seen in the footage. Next step is either a set of ND filters with higher stops or a single variable, then try again. Excellent timing for this video. Great BONUS content too. Thank you Simon.
