Yes, this is a LONG one. But also - I wanted to make sure I got my points out… regardless of how long winded they were 😂

I’m a sucker for f/8 at night on a tripod for mostly static scenes. Totally worth it for the crispness edge to edge and the 20% cinebloom from the longer exposure.

Fantastic video! If you haven’t seen it, there’s a great documentary with Crewdson on some of his more iconic photos from Twilight and Jason Mamoa’s HBO show did a whole episode photographing with Hido

@@JohnCessnaComedy yes! Great point out. I’ve watched both now - I get so much inspo from the way the two of them speak of the work

I think it's important to note that with some practice of controlled breathing and body positioning (tuck those elbows to your body), you can get away with exposures well under the 1/focal length rule of thumb. I've even seen people get great handheld results with full second exposures. I've gotten as low as 1/8 with great results. That doesn't mean you shouldn't have a tripod, but when I travel, I rarely have one, so I end up relying on a fast prime, high ISO, and some steady hands when going out at night.

@@ACatCalledBaudelaire completely agree. I actually go down to 1/8th roughly handheld in rare cases. I’ll usually fire a couple off and 1 or two look bad but I’ll get one that’s sharp. Sniper hands 🤝

Dude. The amount of VALUE packed into this video... biggest take aways I got were: I dont need to invest in an f/ .95 Nokton since, duh, Ill most likely be stopping that lens down anyway. And 2: Tripod Tripod Tripod. I've been trying to handhold everything with little success. Question! Did you use a diffusion filter to get that glowing halo look around light up signs?

Did the photo at 7:29 was taken with the xt3? That's a beautiful photo, would you mind sharing your iso settings? It's actually a perfect shot man!

AV, how you deal with people bothering you when taking pictures at night? Especially with a tripod. At least if you're shooting handheld you can get in and out fast. I've been approached multiple times when taking photos at night of various buildings with a tripod, to the point where I've been turned off from shooting anytime but handheld during the day.

Good question - in general, it all comes back to having a communicable reason for taking the shot. It can be as simple as "the light coming from the window is hitting the lawn beautifully, here have a look," and even inviting them to see your camera screen or view from your perspective. If they continue to question or get frustrated, then I just leave. At the end of the day 99% of people don't actually care, and a lot of the ones that think they do won't once they see the photo you are trying to get!

I just tell them “look at the gorgeous light reflecting in these puddles.” They look at me funny and move on.
