4 methods to remove Bermuda Grass from your garden!

I've found using a four prong fork, some call it a potato fork. Stick it down the length of the prongs (roughly 6") in moist soil push it forward & pull back. This will generally get down to the deep, fine, hairy roots and allow the entire plant to be pulled up. You will still discover a few Bermuda growths through the garden season for the 1st year, just use that method to clear it. After 2 years/seasons you'll rarely find Bermuda in your garden, esp if you clear a 2-3 ft border around the garden. That allows you to remove the Bermuda in the border before it gets into your garden. It's a lot of work, but worth it. I've found by making a

Good tip. Works to get rid of nutsedge as well. Every time she pull up the runners you could hear the runners breaking. Her comment once you have gotten rid of the Bermuda grass . Keep checking to see if anymore has come back. Tells me she has just removed most but not all.

I'm a novice gardener with 4x8 garden bed that I put in last year, which has given me much enjoyment. But I didn't know what to do about the Bermuda grass before putting in spring plants. Your video was the best of several I looked at for demonstrating to a novice how to pull it out and what to look for. I appreciated your tips for a novice like myself weeding a small area -- such as "wear gloves" -- that other videos didn't emphasize. We're now calling the concrete pad at the back of the house, where I piled up the pulled grass to dry it out, the "Die A Thousand Deaths!" pad in your honor, though it's OK with me if it dies just ONE death!

Cardboard, go to local coop or grain and feed places, they usually have pallets loaded up with sheets that are 3x4feet, very uniformed, very easy to overlap and no tape etc to remove.

You have to stay on it, especially when the rimzones wake up in the spring they want to completely take over that area you finally got cleaned out. And yes, seek moral support from other gardeners that are dealing with the same issues.

That's what I've been doing, trying to get rid of it before seeding fescue lawn in the fall. Can only do around 50 sq. ft. at a time though...and it's gettin' REALLY HOT here in KS! Still I prefer it to the cardboard method. That takes a long time to thoroughly kill it.

You hear the runners breaking as she pulls the grass out. This leaves runners in the soil. And that seems to tell the grass to grow more.

I’m in Arizona as well, it’s a VERY popular grass here because it’s so hardy. But also it’s impossible to kill without heavy herbicides (which I refuse to use) or digging up every single root nodule down to like 4 feet. Especially in raised beds they can really reach down deep.

IOh man tell me about it. My fiancee insisted that we till the ground in our yard to dig low enough to build the beds. (1st mistake). Then she opts to use the carboard method and bagged wood chips on top (2nd mistake). I tried to explain the cardboard would break down over time we would still have to pull the weed. (by we, It was me). I think this cardboard method would work but be absolutely certain you cover every inch and even go for a layer of landscaping fabric on top of that to help prevent growth as the like the video explained the cardboard will break down. I think the smother works well in other places but better in n AZ as killing any of the seedlings it drop in the soil is the key

2:07 -- You say this method doesn't really kill the grass, but does weaken it. You don't mention how long you kept the bermuda grass under the plastic, and I noticed this seems to be a pretty shady area. For solarization to work well (i.e., totally kill the grass), there needs to be good prolonged daily exposure to direct sunlight, and the grass needs to stay under the plastic for at least 6 weeks.

Sage advice! My strategy has been to sheet mulch as you've described followed up with handpicking anything that survived. Of course, it is all rather pointless if bermuda is present just outside the garden as it will find it's way back in, but I've found that, like any bully, it will shy away from a bigger bully, so any perennial with deep shade will keep it from encroaching, so forming a border of something like comfrey can make a good barrier. So, if you're eliminating bermuda for an annual bed, make sure you have a barrier solution before attempting to control it. "It can't be reasoned with, it can't be bargained with. It doesn't feel pity or remorse or fear and it absolutely will not stop."

If you can take the garden out of production, and cover with a silage tarp for a few months in the spring. And summer. It will shade it out. You can also cover the garden soil in the fall with the tarp. Next Spring when you un cover the garden there will be no weeds to have to remove.

I believe colorization you are supper to dig a trench around the perimeter and bury the edges so it is air tight. Also saturate the ground deeply before covering.

I scrape it off the top. Add boards for raised bed in back yard or use giant rocks with cardboard underneath.... Add compost, clay soil( cause that's what I have under bermuda)..,mix, add leaves and top off with wood chips.. it works. Then I can use extra clay on my hill in back. Keeps me outta trouble! Lol

The best way to get rid of it I found in areas like that are with a garden fork, hand tilling up the ground and hand pulling up all the underground stolons. Ended up having to do that after doing the cardboard method on a new flower bed.

I was using a flat head screwdriver to pry out the root balls and runners, but my husband saw that and recommended I use a 1” wide, 12-18” crowbar looking thing with a handle for gutting sheet rock, I think. It’s so much easier!! Still labor some, but it gets down in there to get the roots out totally!

This was such a great video! I HATE bermuda grass so so much! It is my mortal enemy in my yard and garden! I hated my lawn and wanted to start a good forest, so laid down sheets of thin cardboard paper then about 6-10 inches of wood chips, hoping it would kill everything off and I could start making a beautiful urban food forest. Well, the bermuda grass had other plans! The following season it came back so strong, and all the other actual grasses got killed off so it was in heaven and took over my entire yard, then my garden beds! It's insane! Got a late garden planted this year, cut all the bermuda down in the bed then put a bunch of soil on top and planted, but it came right back. I'm gonna keep fighting over here, but damn that stuff is evil and STRONG!!! 😪

I hate Bermuda with a passion! It’s killed off my fescue year after year climbing it’s nasty vines into my wanted grass… I had no idea what Bermuda was till moving to a house with a yard and with neighbors yards covered in this crap. I just set up my ibc tote garden, the grass is trying to grow under and around the ibc totes… it’s hard to kill it which is why I went with ibc totes. I’ll be sheet mulching as I’ve done the dig it out method and it fails every time, thank you for sharing

I'll bet that didn't ultimately work. Bermuda probably grew right though it. I put weed cloth and mulch down a few weeks ago in my zinnia bed and almost immediately the bermuda popped up through the tiny little holes. (smaller than a carpet would have) Update: O.k. I found (a?..the?) video and it appears to have worked with only a little bermuda grass finding it's way through. But he didn't say what happens when you get a good rain....or how difficult it is to eventually get rid of the carpet when it's been out in the elements for a year...full of dirt etc...which probably makes it even heavier to remove than it was when he layed it.

We did a good job of overlapping but found that we should have done more than 1 layer of cardboard. We put about a foot of deteriorating wood chips over the cardboard. Now we have to dig through the wood chips and into the soil beneath. PLEASE USE MULTIPLE LAYERS OF CARDBOARD!!!

Bermuda grass can look dead. But once it gets wet from rain it will come back.

bayer Bio Advanced Bermudagrass Control RTS spray kills bermuda, but it must be applied in fall and spring. Otherwise put a billboard tarp donw for a full year is best way if you ahve time IMHO.

How does ag fabric work with this grass? I sheet mulch, top with wood chips and straw (chipped leaves, etc) over the off season and as soon as I move away the under layers to plant out in the spring, it invades immediately becoming aggressive as soon as temps hold above 80*F. I was foolish and tilled one area, and it is taking over! Any place I top dress with manure (almost primarily rabbit... so no seeds in it), it goes nuts! This is really frustrating because I love putting my animals (pigs or chickens) on plots over the winter. You'd think all that tilling and scratching would do a number on this type of grass. But it always creeps in or pops up. I do agree with all the methods you talked about, i use them for all other weeds and for soil health already. I'm just looking at how I can better manage DURING the growing season so I can keep up. Like, if I can just really go after it in one area, I won't be pulled in so many directions the next year. I can just maintain and go after another area each year; all while suppressing or wearing it during the growing season. I would suspect, this aggressive grass is growing and spreading faster than I can pull it. Unfortunately, I also think it is spreading more and more from year to year. So it feels like my labor is in vain. I'm growing on over 5k sq. ft of garden spaces this year... so it gets overwhelming. I feel like I'm losing this battle. 😭

In my experience Bermuda will push through ANY ground cover given time. Only way I've ever gotten rid of Bermuda is dig EVERYTHING out at least 12" deep. Install a buried physical barrier around your gardening area. (Think sheet steel, or 1/8" rigid plastic) Must be at least 12" deep to stop the rhizomes. Must not have any gaps at all. Then fill your garden area with CLEAN dirt. The tiniest little chunk of Bermuda will wreck all your hard work. Only then will weeding be effective at dealing with Bermuda. Every time you pull it and don't get 100% it doubles it's growing ends like a hydra.

I have what is supposed to be a large flower bed, but previous owners decided to plant Bermuda grass instead of having a flower bed. The flower bed does have a concrete sidewalk between it and the lawn, so I e been looking for an effective way to permanently kill the Bermuda grass quickly and non toxic so that I can replant after it’s cleaned out. I heard a vinegar solution permanently kills Bermuda. Have you heard of this and any thoughts?

you could just try it a see...but I've never wanted to do that because I'm afraid nothing will grown there afterwards with all that extra acid. I've heard salt works on many weeds as well, but then...same issue....only too much alkaline for anything to grow. Get a potato fork in there and pull by hand when the soil is damp after a rain....or if you have a year...cover it completely with cardboard or updside down carpet and just wait for a really long time.

Vinegar will weaken the tops but will NOT kill the Bermuda. I've tried 33% straight vinegar and still won't kill it. Best way to keep it out I've found is to first thoroughly weed it as deep as you can go. Dig a trench 12" deep all the way around your garden and install a solid barrier in the trench. Kinda like burying wire around a chicken coop to stop burrowing predators. Usually the rhizomes of Bermuda are 6 to 8 inches deep. So the barrier stops the spread underground and you only need to address the runners above ground.

@@macoeur1122 as soon as the vinegar is dry you can plant directly where you sprayed. I've never had any issues with vinegar affecting soil. You'd have to be buying it in 55gal barrels or something to do any real damage if even then.

I watched your entire video, but it doesn't help me at all. My problem with Bermuda grass is when it takes over an existing landscaped area. The plants prevent me from removing the Bermuda grass. Pulling it out just breaks it off, and I cannot get down to the root. IS THERE A PRODUCT I CAN SPRAY THAT WILL KILL THE BERMUDA GRASS BUT NOT THE PERMANENT LANDSCAPE PLANTS THAT ARE THERE? My yard guy said I need to remove everything and start over. This is too expensive for me. (I did do this in a smaller area with the same problem, so I can now keep up with pulling out the Bermuda grass.). For this huge area, I don't want to lose everything...). Thanks for any advice.

You are not exactly correct about pulling Bermuda runners. That will NOT get rid of Bermuda. Bermuda has a massive underground root network with strands as thick as copper wire. You have to dig deep enough to pull that out in order to control Bermuda in any area of the lawn.

I share your animus of Bermuda and admire your perseverance, but don't waste time removing tape from the boxes. When we sheet-mulched our garden, a lot of tape was left on. That was several years ago, and now most of the tape has come up one its own, having been loosened over time by rain and watering. Often when weeding a long length of it will come up with no effort whatsoever. I'm sure this will scandalize some people, but I have no regrets. Good luck in your eradication efforts. ~ Lisa

First method doesn't really eradicate it.... the second method is annoying and you have to cover every little crack...... the third method doesn't work no matter how high you pile your wood chips... ....so we're back to pulling! lol 🤣 I've pretty much reached all the same conclusions as well. We'd all love some great "hack" (which is why I watched your video) but there really isn't any better way to get rid of weeds than by pulling them and keeping after them regularly.
