I’ve been having success using a broadfork. It gets deep enough into the soil and loosens everything so you can pull it out without the root breaking and regrowing.

To get rid of Bermuda grass, you have to go at least a shovel depth ,12” or more to get the deep rhizomes out, it time consuming but it’s last all season, and if you keep up the next year , it got the battle mostly won, but it’s a lot of hard work!

In my experience responsible use of glyphosate is a necessary evil with Bermuda. I’m ok with it because it’s killing an invasive and replacing with native plants and pollinators.

I removed 9 inches of dirt and evened out the yard and bought a bag of grass seeds. My grass looks like weeds but neighbor says it’s grass, just don’t like Bermuda grass, looks like weeds. So finally, I decided to remove it. There is so much weeds and Bermuda, I have been digging at least 12 inches to remove it.

I was hoping for some good news. 😢 I have tried every method you mention, but the only thing that works is pulling this crap out by hand. I was hoping you had a magic bullet that I hadn't tried yet. I guess for now, I'll keep pulling this crap out until it decides to stay out of my mulched area around my raised beds. I have been pulling this out for 2 years now, and It has gotten better. But you just have to stay on it before it gets out of control. Thanks for your in-depth video.

I was thinking about all the grass that's popping up again in my mulched garden area right after I have just gotten done with pulling this mad grass out again, laying down new cardboard and multch. I can't keep up with pulling it all out. I was going to spay an area with vinegar water today and see if that will help kill off the new growth. I garden in the evenings now because it's getting too hot here in Florida, so I pull weeds for about 15 minutes before I'm done gardening for the night.

That black plastic technique can take an entire growth season to work. Basically if there is any Bermuda grass elsewhere, it will find its way in. Also, that mulch was possibly contaminated with Bermuda grass. Hand pulling will eat up your life's free time.

I am currently battling an approximately 400 square foot area of Bermuda grass in my lawn that is so thick you cannot see the ground. As soon as the frost left the ground in early March 2022 I started Phase One digging this up shovel full by shovel full. Since Bermuda grass spreads by rhizomes that can penetrate the soil 15 inches deep this digging is a slow process. Just penetrating the surface is difficult because of the dense lattice work of runners Bermuda grass generates. It took me two weeks to complete Phase One. I am now into Phase Two. Phase Two is comprised of digging up this area again to get as much remaining Bermuda grass removed as possible. I will them have to wait until June before this Bermuda grass comes out of dormancy and begins to grow. Once the Bermuda grass becomes active I will apply weedkiller from June-August to assure all remaining Bermuda grass is eliminated. In early September I will reseed this area with native grasses. How did this area of my lawn become overrun with Bermuda grass? Well the only person to blame is me. Obviously I needed to be much more aggressive early on but here in northeast Illinois I hadn't ever dealt with this evil weed so I was caught unawares. I promise I will not be caught unawares again.
@fieldtrippin1
@fieldtrippin1 2 жыл бұрын
Attacking it in phases sounds like a great approach. Digging out and removing each and every piece of rhizome is difficult but extremely helpful in the battle against Bermuda Grass. Smothering and/or solarizing during the growing season can be a great way to help destroy the remaining Bermuda grass without the need for spraying weed killer. Consider smothering and solarizing before you consider spraying chemical herbicide. Seeds could have got into your landscape in a number of ways, not necessarily your fault. Keep up the effort season to season and you will eventually be on the winning side of this battle. Best wishes to you.

Any proof you can eradicate or just manage? No videos show it full grown then completely gone for years. It’s ruining my garden too and I’m about to give up as my hands won’t last.
@fieldtrippin1
@fieldtrippin1 2 жыл бұрын
You can eradicate to a degree, but to keep it from becoming a problem again you need to continue best practices to manage it. We are currently winning our battle with Bermuda Grass but the fight is ongoing. I have some videos that are current that show how these landscapes are doing right now if you'd like to see the current state of things. Remove those weeds early and often, young plants are easier to remove. Cut back, smother/solarize, dig up and remove all pieces of the plant, solarize/smother again, dig up whatever survives, use thick layers of mulch where possible, utilize layers of cardboard under your mulch where possible, and repeat continually . Good luck to you!

@fieldtrippin1

Dang! What a dilemma. A barrier of some sort may be a good option to slow it up a bit. I had the same problem once and installed shade cloth along a cyclone fence to slow up the spread. Of course try using thick layers of mulch on your side, it can still spread into mulch but it wont be as deeply rooted and should be easier to remove. A kind and polite chat with your neighbor could help too.

The weeds are trying to grow but are running out of energy, once they do I will go back and remove all remnants of the plants. Good Luck!
