This is how I killed the Bermuda grass in my yard without killing the fescue. The product I used was Ornamec 170 purchased from Amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...

Did the Bermuda grass stay dead with 1 application, or did you need to make some additional applications of the Ornamec?
@albertj34216 жыл бұрын
I only put down one dose. As best I can tell the vast majority that browned out is completely dead. I have found a few spots were it is trying to get a weak green color again near the root but you can tell it is really hurt. Keep in mind I wasn't too worried about accidentally killing everything so I mixed it a bit thin but put it down heavy. Now from what I have read about bermuda grass the seeds can stay dormant underground for years. So I expect some reemergence this coming spring and probably the next few springs. My plan is to keep putting down the Ornamec every year until it is completely eradicated. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.

The label on the product never says it will "kill" Bermuda, only "control" it, whatever that means. AND the label says you should apply every 30 days, mainly in the spring and autumn.

It looks like this product may be my answer to spreading bermuda grass in my lawn...I have ordered Ornamec 170 and I will see how it does on my fescue blend lawn....will post later in this month to report how it has worked to eliminate the bermuda....thanks for the extremely well-done video!

I've read that you should use a metal rake, or one of those tilling claws with a long handle to pull up the Bermuda grass so it's easier to hit when you spray. I've also heard that you should use a surfactant with it for best results. I haven't use This product yet, but just discovered the Bermuda from the front has infected the nice lawn I have in the back yard, so I'm going to treat the lawn in the next few weeks.

The Bermuda grass rhizomes creep and collect in areas around concrete so they can root where water is more plentiful and less prone to evaporate. If you really want to see how pervasive this invasive grass species is, dig a 9-inch to 12-inch wide (about the width of a shovel) down just slightly below the thickness of your concrete driveways and concrete walkways (about 4-inches to 6-inches deep) and peek at what is harboring at the edge under the concrete.

Bermuda is a beautiful grass. After years of living in the transition zone and spending tons of money trying to maintain fescue (and don't get me wrong, fescue is beautiful too when it's maintained correctly), I feel like bermuda is the much more wallet friendly and maintenance friendly of them all.
@milleniumann28 Жыл бұрын
I disagree zoysia is cheaper and a better tool to fight the Bermuda! Especially if your in the transition zone because Bermuda is short lived maybe 3 strong months but zoysia will start choking the Bermuda areas around September and won’t lose any ground the next spring.

Thanks for the video! Did the Bermuda come back? I have a bunch in my yard here in Maryland and am curious how often you use this product? Thanks again
@st76505 жыл бұрын
Hey great video. Bermuda grass is so invasive here are a few other tips I’ve learned over the years. First of all thanks for the video. As far as nutsedge or killinga. PLEASE DONT PULL IT. Only makes it worse use sledgehammer works wonderful no more nutsedge. Another fix I’ve found. Don’t just go spray a bunch of chemicals first find out what the weed is and do a little research then one you know what it is then you know how to treat it. One weed one of the most important that has taken me many years and lots of money we need to discuss further called common Bermuda grass or wiregrass. Here is a list of selective herbicides that I have found to control it ORNAMEC with Aqua Zorb Fluazifop-p-butyl Kills Bermuda grass/weeds but won't harm the fescue. Only kills Bermuda when leaves are green in the warm season or actively growing months Aqua Zorb is a (surfactant) which makes it stick to leaves. Baby shampoo works the same. Surfactant. Turflon ester does same as ORNAMEC cheaper price Fusillade 2 & Turflon works well too for Bermuda treatment Bayer makes a product called Bermudagrass control for lawns easy to use just hook to garden hose and spray just make sure it’s during warm months when it’s actively growing. BNSF Makes a product called PYLEX which works great however it is expensive would recommend if you can afford it. You can use glyphosate/Roundup if you are doing a yard renovation or planning on putting a piece of sod down however here again make sure you spray during active growing season or none of these products will get down to the root spraying during dormant season colder weather will only result in wasting time and money and applying product where you don’t need it. As far as weed control in your lawn I have found the easiest way is to use Scott’s Weed-B-Gone garden hose may take several applications but you will get there. As far as fertilizer goes I would recommend malorganite for a safe and cheap fertilizer to apply anytime with great results. If you core aerate in the fall and oversees with a high quality turf type fescue or high quality grass seed your on your way to a beautiful lawn in the spring core aerate and over seed goes hand in hand in the fall. A few last tips I’ve learned over the years. Don't leave any leafs on the lawn because they don't break down good in the soil causing future problems. Spot treat weeds NO blanket granulated weed and feed. Your paying from product that you don't use and spreading chemicals you don't need. Spot treat weeds that's what the Scott's professionals do Leaving fertilizer to do fertilizer work. Getting just the weed that needs the treatment.

Hi, I have some I've been trying to kill prior to planting certain spots keep coming up. I want to seed with fescue. Early spring it is full of foxtails. What do you recommend?
@mjholthaus4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Ornamec works well but I think I've been using it all wrong. My results were not as good as yours and now I think I know why. My dose was not high enough (I was afraid of killing the fescue) and I was trying to spot treat (again, afraid of killing the fescue), hoping that infecting a few strands of the Bermuda would kill the whole strain. Not the way it works I can see by your video. I can see how you did your method, using it thin but laying that thinner ratio on heavily. Nice. Thanks very much! My yard does not have a lot yet and I am going to keep it that way.

In Southern VA wouldn't you rather have Bermuda since it does better in the summer? Tall fescue in the transition zone can really take a beating with the heat and humidity.
@albertj34216 жыл бұрын
Ideally speaking yes you are correct Bermuda is better suited to our summers particularly August if left alone to do its own thing. However with minimal care and the occasional watering if we have several weeks of drought K31 does surprising well here. I personally like Bermuda grass but my problem with it is all the runners. I have a lot edging to do at my house. I have never measured but I would guess I have in the neighborhood of 800-1000+ lineal feet of concrete to edge not counting mulch beds so all those runners really add up to a lot of work every week. Whereas fescue does not need nearly as much edge maintenance.
@krehbein6 жыл бұрын
Albert J3 yeah that is a lot of edging to do, considering how aggressive it is. I see it around here, northern va, “overflowing” from lawns onto curbs. !

I use a product called Turflon Ester. It's a concentrate and quite pricey, but worth it. It WILL knock the hell out of Bermuda....BUT....Bermuda will come back eventually. You'll need to repeat the application a month or so later, and then a month or so later. With each application, you get a better grip on the problem and less of it comes back. It's not perfect, but its great. I use a small 2 gal pump sprayer and just wander around every few months. I am slowly getting rid of all of it.
