In my own opinion, Rhodes was necessary to the advancement of the African man. It is witnessed up until today in particular my own country Zimbabwe. We have demonstrated a high degree of incompetence to date, with a lot of infrastructure broken. It was necessary and worthy of the colonial structures as it became a catalyst of the African civilization. Imagine what could be of Africa without having been given the direction of becoming a civilized people. We are coming to self realization soon and the moment of truth will strike us and we will never regret the colonial era as we will find ourselves becoming the dominant race world wide with a superiority greater than any race that has ever been on the universe. thus in the next 120years, African's will be on top of the world. Thanx to the colonial era so from me long live Cecil John Rhodes and there is a reason for your burial at Matopos.

His intentions were good, if not slightly vain, but his methods were highly devious and caused much corruption, death and suffering. Surely these advancements and progress in the African continent could have been achieved differently?

Empires come and go, look at China's advanced imperial society that vanished centuries before under the first Emperor Chin.

No way, Rhodes gave the black African's equality, the vote for the first time.. and housing and jobs. He empowered a people who had been marginalized for a century or more under the Dutch. And look at South Africa and other African countries today, they're flourishing as independent nations. The African people are strong and talented. They excel in many areas world class, from athletics to the arts, particularly music.

You admit Rhodes was English and then immediately imply that he did not support "his fellow South Africans". You can't have it both ways. As to the 2nd Boer War you seem to think that the republics were blameless. They were happy enough to hide behind the Red Coats when the Zulus were threatening, only to rebel thereafter. You deprived the diggers of all civil rights and yet expected everyone to love you. I presume you also purvey the normal coterie of Boer lies - " first concentration camps", "genocide therein" etc. There was never any correlation between the camps in South Africa and those of Germany. Yes those who supported the Boer guerilla were moved to camps. The is standard practice in a Guerilla war. In the camps, the guards received the same rations and medical care as the inmates. and the cause of the deficiencies in the early days was the activities of the guerillas, who blockaded them By the end of the war, conditions in the camp were better than those in the working class suburbs in Britain.The Boers were inevitably defeated in the field by Lord Roberts, who was an entirely competent commander and a rather kindly man. The Boers chose to fight on, and can hardly complain that Kitchener was given the task of suppressing their campaign- another entirely competent commander, but no one ever accused him of being kindly. However, if you choose to live by the sword, you are likely to die by the sword. There was no sign of punctilious chivalry in the early days of Boer ascendency and the post War record of observance of human rights hardly earns you sympathy. Learn to live with the decision of history.
