Thank you very much for the simple information. I'm a electronic music producer (former guitarrist) and I'm trying to runaway from the 4/4 overused formula to produce. I'm was aware of the polyrhythm concept but it's much easier to undertand their applications through your examples.

@mattlikesdrumming The '3' is the pulse, so adding a 4 makes it 4:3 In the 'Eulogy' polyrhythm it's 3:4 because the pulse is in 4.

Clear and helpful lesson for us drummers just getting into polyrhythms. One mathy thing, though. Twelve isn't the lowest common denominator of the integers 3 and 4. It's the least common multiple.

When i play 4 over 3 i say "pass the gosh darn ketchup" so that pass is on 1, gosh is on 2, and the "ketch" part in ketchup is on 3. all other syllables are on the 4 pattern. The "pass" is on 1. The "the" is on the a of 1. The "gosh" is on 2. The "darn" is on the and of 2. The "ketch" in the word "ketchup" is on 3. and the "up" in the word "ketchup" is the final note within the 4/3 pattern on the e of 3, than ending on 4.

Broken hand by Lamb of God has one point with this exact polyrhythm is played on the ride and snare (3 on ride and 4 on snare), with double kicks under it. I think it sounds pretty cool, so u guys should check it out if u wanna carry on with this 4/3 polyrhythm

Is it easier to play polyrhythms by learning and memorizing the sound of the pattern as a whole and recreate that sound? Of course that falls apart when you want to improvise polyrhythms, unless you already know the pattern sound right? I'm not a drummer I'm a bass player but the idea of being able to drum at a high-level fascinates me.

The bar is not the same length for the 3 and the 4. You're counting each measure with the same BPM. They overlap until refining to land on the same beat after a few measures. An easy way of understand sound difference between rhythmic combonations is to play the secondary rhythm's number of beats walking up a scale to the beat of the original time signature is in -1 -2 -3 -4/ -1 -2 -3 -4/ -1 -2 -3 -4/ -1 -2 -3/ -1 -2 -3/ -1 -2 -3/ -1 -2 -3 The root note of the phrase changes over time.

Funny how many drummers have difficulty with breaking out of a straight four. I am a guitarist and had to sit down at the drummer's kit to demonstrate a bossa nova beat that was 3 over 4. A lot of clave in latin music is in the same meter.

When played in 3 bars, it's called a polymeter, when repeated every bar (triplets over 16th notes) THEN it's polyrhythm.

I find the notation so weird with your chart and the X's. To me it seems the top one should be the 3 pattern and the bottom one should be the 4th pattern hence why there's 3 hits on the top and 4 on the bottom, but apparently it's not worded that way...

Best way to learn Polyrhythm is by studying African Drumming. 12 is an important number, but so is 24, This is where micro rhythms occur, (taking same rhythm and playing twice as fast.

Well, it's 4 over 3, but (as far as I understand) you can play this with any note length, quarter, eiths, etc. But those particular are "4 over 3 quarter notes"

Christ! You count polyrhythms so weirdly. I would count 3:4 as a measure of 3/4 where the 3 part is playing quarter notes and the 4 part is playing dotted 8th notes. Or if you wanted to swap the pulse, you could count it as a measure of 4/4 where the 4 part is playing quarter notes and the 3 part is playing half note triplets. So much simpler to wrap your head around.
