I love how Dorico does cues. It is effortless and very useful. It even has a setting that automatically puts "play" in the parts tight after the cue. I also love the R command to repeat anything. I also love that I only enter chords on one staff and it is automatically copied to all rhythm section parts. I too was so happy when I found out i just need to push the space bar to advance the caret.

Great video -- i just discovered you today and just subscribed. I taught orchestration in a university music department (just retired 3 years ago), and I love what you have to say. For me, one of the best features of Dorico is Lock Duration: when several instruments have identical rhythms, you can perfect one part with all its dynamics and articulations, copy it into all the instruments that will be rhythmically identical, turn on Lock Duration, and then go through each line changing only pitches -- everything else stays as you wrote it.

Thanks Ryan. I am a user of Dorico 4 pro with NotePerformer, and Cubase 11 pro. I really think that Steinberg should add Dorico's features as a score editor to Cubase, and it would be a real bombshell. Because in the end, Dorico is a very good score editor but an incomplete sequencer, and Cubase is a very good sequencer but a bad score editor. I don't understand why they don't work in that line, nor do I know if it is possible and/or commercially profitable. Your tutorials as always, chapeau !!!!

Hey Ryan. Recent subscriber here - love the channel! Sounds like I switched to Dorico from Sibelius around the same time as you - it's really, really great. Related to your tip about exploding chords, did you know that Dorico can do that instantly on note input across multiple staves? Say you have 4 horn staves and a 4-note chord to apply, select the top stave, go into note input mode then shift and the down arrow. You'll see the note input icon spread across the selected staves. Play your four note chord, it goes straight in, one note per stave, high to low! It's awesome.....!

Yea I love the idea of using Dorico on iPad but I almost never use it for some reason. I guess because I work at home, so if I have access to a wide monitor and keyboard I might as well use those! Maybe I need to get out of the house more?

I don't think about entering rests. I just advance the caret along the grid with the cursor-right key. The helpful thing to know about the grid is you can change its grain with a combo selection at the lower left of the workspace.

Another option for exploding chord is: filter top note, then move to staff above/below. I'm not sure if there's a shortcut assigned to it, but it's very fast when doing midi orchestration. That way you know the music is in the correct spot in those sessions that have 30+ instruments.

Another option for your piano sketch / orchestration is to use multiple layouts: piano sketch only; sketch + orchestration; orchestration only. Set them up in multiple tabs and it’s easy to switch between them. You can do something similar to hear only certain groups if you want. Regarding entering rests: the Dorico party line is, “you don’t enter rests. You enter music, and Dorico figures out where the rests go.”

Great video, Ryan. I wonder which oi both software is better for you? Sibelius looks likes to be more friendly to learn than Dorico (at least 3.5). Specially in page formatting in engrave mode, Dorico looks to me very "obscure". What do you think about it?

Just moved to Dorico from Finale after, what... 27 years, at least. I just couldn't take it any more with Finale's convoluted menus, unstable nature and crappy sound playback. Finale is a fantastic, forward-thinking, powerful notation program... for the 1990s. I don't have any creative tips to offer for Dorico at this point... I'm still learning my way around. Only to say that in general things are so much more intuitive and easy than they were in Finale. I'm now trying to figure out page layouts and getting scores and parts looking session-level good. I'm finding that a bit challenging currently.

In my opinion the caret behavior actually makes more sense then "inputting rests" but I can understand why this is complicated for people that works with other softwares longer.
@soundtreks
@soundtreks Жыл бұрын
I’ve never used input rests actually. I usually use the arrow keys to advance to the next beat I want to enter a note. I also love moving notes around with the shortcut keys in terms of their placement in a bar and then often extending or shortening their duration. It’s one of the key features in Dorico that I dearly miss if I’m working in MuseScore which is also nice but rather clunky compared to Dorico IMHO

The move/copy notes shortcut to above or below staff is also brilliant.

In Dorico 99% of the time you don't really enter rests. They are just created when there isn't anything there. Also how far the carrot moves is controlled by the rhythmic grid which is set under the "write" drop down menu at the top.
@RyanLeach
@RyanLeach 2 жыл бұрын
With the space bar the caret actually moves by whatever rhythmic value you have selected in the toolbar, not by the grid. The arrow keys move it along the grid.

It takes a while to get used to rests in Dorico -- they are just the absence of notes. For me it's faster -- use the space bar or the right arrow, depending on the length of the rest. Sometimes I use the mouse to move to another place, if it's far enough away.

@@RyanLeach Correct, but that's not entering rests. You're just skipping duration and then the rests appear when you add another note down the line. The only time I really ever explicitly enter a rest is when I have multiple voices on one staff but the bottom one doesn't play for a measure. I then need to enter that voice, Shift-B, and type rest, which enters a bar rest.

Hello Ryan! Great video!👍 One quick question. Dorico vs Sibelius, which is easy to work with 3rd party sample libraries? and noteperformer ?
@RyanLeach
@RyanLeach 2 жыл бұрын
In my experience NotePerformer functions exactly the same on both. With Dorico 4 I'd say it's miles ahead for using sample libraries because there's now a piano roll and you can edit MIDI information alongside your score. However I still prefer to export the MIDI after I'm done writing and do my mockups in Logic.

Hello, Do you know if you can use your DAW and Dorico 5 together so they sync and record regions in your DAW and on Dorico Pro 5 simultaneously or do you have to import midi files into Dorico Pro 5 all day as you go along?
@RyanLeach
@RyanLeach Жыл бұрын
There is no sync like you are suggesting, although wouldn't go back and forth all day long but instead do the sketch and composition and Dorico and the production in Logic
@dynamicalan

@@RyanLeach Hi Ryan, I hope you are doing well today. I am talking about rewire: everyone has been provided rewire for a long years. The instruments do exist in Logic as far as vsl is concerned and also in Dorico but the sound stage in Dorico 5 does not exist in Logic. Dorico also has instruments and other steinberg instruments; so it would be better to bounce from Dorico 5 if it does: otherwise it would make no sense at all to have your sound stage like you have in Dorico if it's only for notation. Therefore it would sound better if it was possible for Dorico to play in the groove - But if I am to do the sketch in Dorico then I would have to import back into Logic - But the composition in Dorico would go way beyond the sketch.
@RyanLeach
@RyanLeach Жыл бұрын
@@dynamicalan Personally I don't use the VSTs in Dorico at all, I just use NotePerformer. I completely separate the processes though, so I do not go into Logic to produce until the composition is done. But your line "in the groove" might be the main thing - if it's something groove or synth based I'll probably just do the entire thing in Logic. I use Dorico for pieces that lend themselves more to notation, like an orchestral track rather than a trailer cue
@dynamicalan
@dynamicalan Жыл бұрын
@@RyanLeach No that's not what I meant - It's singers don't really sing metric notation programs tend to sound like they are playing from note to note instead of playing, for example on the and of 2 (2&) that's how one section felt while listening to one of the videos - Rewire might be outdated but I did notice Cubase running in the background in one of the videos so the audio files will play with the project. I will have to find that again. Thank You

There should be a sync to option in Logic if Dorico Pro 5 can send but bouncing is the other question: something just aren't midi - Thank You.
