Folks, check out MonitorControl app! I discovered it last month and I've been using it every day. It allows for controlling the external monitor's brightness and volume using the menu bar or the keyboard brightness/volume buttons. It can also sync the built-in macbook screen and the external monitor such that adjusting the brightness will affect both. No more fumbling with the OSD. It works for almost all monitors. And it's free and open source! Not sponsored, just sharing because I think this is a really good app. I'll make a vid about free macOS apps I think everyone should know about, MonitorControl included. Link in description

i'm pretty much happy with this monitor. i haven't had any problems so far. worth noting that after 3 months, i've switched to 1080p scaling (macOS) from 1440p because i noticed myself leaning it frequently to see things clearly (i don't have 20-20 vision anymore haha). but, despite going back to a 1080p-like real estate or scaling, the clarity a 4K panel brings is just 100% worth the cost. I now have a secondary monitor on top of the LG, a 22" 1080p Dell monitor. The clarity difference is HUGE. For productivity, 4K is totally worth it. Minor things: I wish this monitor had USB ports and thinner bezel. But I can't really complain for the price hahaha

Ideal monitor size for video resolution is these. 21.5" for 1080p, 24 inch for 2k, 27 inch for 4k, 32 inch for 8k (future). If screen size more for given resolution then the video looks stretched out. This is the case with most TV which is fine for long distance watching but for monitor purpose (short distance) it looks dull.
@earlmalaki2 жыл бұрын
in my experience, running 100% 4K in 27" is not doable. everything is so tiny haha hence my remark that 32" might be the minimum for 4K, in the context of using it as a productivity monitor. might be different if strictly for video/media consumption though? im not sure

Dude, scaling down from 4K resolution to a "lower" resolution is THE REASON the image is sharp. That's how high-definition screens work. More pixels for the same image as on 1440p or 1080p. (just a note - obviously you don't want to decrease the resolution, you want to indeed scale down)

I am a graphic designer and I am confused between two screens, the first LG 27UL550 and the second asus VP28UQGL , so what do you advise me?Which of them is better for the field of graphic design??
@earlmalaki Жыл бұрын
hey man sorry for the very late reply. I'd advise against VP28UQGL because it has a TN panel and looking at their site, they didn't even put the color gamut rating. for graphic design, color is king. you want to be as accurate as possible. IPS panels give you that plus less color shift when viewed on angle. the 27UL550 is IPS with 98% sRGB rating.

Do you find that the LG is super dark? Maybe my settings are just off, but I have it operating as a second monitor next to my iMac and it just looks extremely dark to the point that it bugs me quite a bit!
@earlmalaki2 жыл бұрын
I find it sufficient but its totally subjective (like your room lightning brightness, maybe you have a glaring window behind you, or maybe your eyes just prefer brighter screens than I do haha) I normally use mine at around 45 brightness at night and around 65 brightness during the day. It does not get as bright as my M1 macbook, but I never had the need to use either at max brightness. For reference, the 27UL550 has a max brightness of 300 nits, while the 2020 m1 macbook and m1 iMac has a max brightness of 500 nits.

the acer remark though hahaha I noticed that prices vary a lot per country so I still included the Dell. In my country the Dell S2721QS UHD is double the price as the LG 27UL550-W, they are far not in the same price range. The Dell S2721DS is almost the same price but has only QHD, but it's a Dell a big name especially, if you have Dell computers, like I do. I think another/the real competitor is the Samsung U28R550 (released in 2019, too). Why do you suggest not to buy the LG? I think this LG monitor is still relevant in 2022, just name any newer model that has the same price and has more features? That AOC model is not even available in my country, and finding recent AOC UHD monitor is not easy here.
@earlmalaki2 жыл бұрын
My bad, to be clear, I'm not saying don't buy the 27UL550. I'm saying more of "here are 4 things to consider before buying it so you know what you're getting". I'm pretty happy with my 27UL550. But some people might not be happy with the 4 shortcomings I shared in this video. So I wanted to share those shortcomings to spread awareness. I agree with your sentiment on Dell being a reliable name. In my country, the S2721QS also costs more than the 27UL550 but just around 80 USD more. The S2721QS felt like a safe pick. But at the end of the day, with all things considered, the 27UL550 seemed like a good deal despite its shortcomings, so I went for it and saved myself a few bucks haha

27" actually is too big for 4K. The ideal size for 4K resolution is 21.5". 27" is for 5K monitors.
@earlmalaki2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's one way of looking at it too (but shouldn't it be 24" instead of 21.5? for a full 2x scaling) I agree on 27" 5K greatness, however, it is far more expensive (even more than a 32" 4K) Then a 24" 4K does not offer screen real estate benefit (at 2x scaling) Leaving us with a 27" 4K that offers a great compromise of high DPI + high screen real estate + affordable price
@edimarjunior56752 жыл бұрын
@@earlmalaki You are right. But I prefer 27 4K" than 32" 4K, cause even 32" isn't big enough to use at 100% scaling. You'll use scaling anyway, so the 27" will be a bit sharper, which is nice.

The downside for me is that it doesn't have speakers. While talking about these reasons, I think it is necessary to look at the prices(exactly the best price/performance).
