Hi, thanks for sharing. I'm on the brink of getting burned out for the second time in my 25 year design career. Been doing everything from UI, to photography, imagery, web, mobile, print, instore, editorial - the whole nine yards of it. I'm afraid of quitting cause I've sacrificed so much to get to where I'm at. It's fear of loosing the income as well of course. I'm not tired of creative thinking but there's less of that now in the world of apps and digital projects. It's all about speed and deliverance. Makes me wanna puke. This isn't what I signed up for back in the day. We can't all be Sagmeister's taking sabbaticals when we have financial obligations. Good your okay now.

It's frustrating when you can't come up with ideas and match them with clients needs. Working professionally for 3 years now and now I'm not sure if I should continue this or do something else. 😰😢 Feeling frustrated and lost!

@@midovinci I think it's a matter of time and lack of it. Can't both be active designer and have time left to do other things. Too many obligations. The career is all consuming. Guess I just need to decide what to do in the future and what to become. Still have some years left in me after all.

@Underhills4 жыл бұрын
@@Guy92618 It varies. I'm not from the states and my current title is UX designer cause I do alot of UI work. It pays more than graphic design. It pays my bills in my current situation and I'm glad I'm able to work remotely in these Corona times. The people making the most in my line of work where I live are the ones that offer their services as a private consultant IF they are lucky enuff to be signed up for a large long lasting contract. If not that could be quite a risky ordeal.

I LOVE design, it's the industry that's killed me. I've learned so much, from marketing to web, but, as being a core designer, you need to specialize.

the part I hate about design is constant learning! The work environment is horrible - deadlines on everything all the time. Also, ergonomically, you suffer a lot staring at a screen all day, your hand hurts using the mouse and your back kills sitting so long. I wish I was logical, I would have become a Developer. Also, pay sucks. I really think designers should be paid way more
@justjackiie3 жыл бұрын
Ditto on the constant learning. Don't get we wrong, I want to continue to learn in life, but it feels like every week there's another program, etc., that needs to be mastered in order to keep yourself remotely relevant or competitive. It's gotten to the point where I don't even like designing in my spare time anymore. I think the issue is ultimately the motive behind the learning. It's out of survival instead of innocent curiosity or the pure desire to learn, which results in burnout-fast. Nonetheless, constant learning will be demanded in every industry; however, you might as well go after the job that will pay you the most for doing it. Graphic Design isn't it.

# 4 is your personal opinion; it's valid because some clients aren't great. Great designers don't listen to what client wants. The solution lies in the needs. Yes, you backed it with a Michael Bierut quote, but also in that same video, he says he sees clients as if he were a doctor, and they were his patients, "The sicker the better." He gives them what they need. And also to quote Erick Spiekermann, "Clients don't have ideas, clients have problems."

@@bethanyproctor it may be a very competitive field. However, you could use that to your advantage. Look for trends from the bigger companies in the area and focus on what they don't offer. Ask questions that concern past customers' preferences vs. trends. Another idea is to test samples of random designs for $5 a design for new customers. Simply post a link for that price, asking them only the name and BRIEF nature of their business. Take that info into account and spend no more than 5 mins creating a thumbnail. If they don't like the design, you haven't wasted a lot of time and energy and stress in the design process. You'll either end up with $5 for a one-time trial or a repeat clientele. I hope this information helps you in your endeavors!
