Just completed 2 weeks at KLLM Academy in Lancaster, Texas. Great people. I had my CDL all ready. Had not driven in 4 years. 9 day refresher with a beginner class. 4 days orientation. Away from home for 16 nights. KLLM put me up & fed me 3 meals a day. Private room with cable TV & maid service. Requested 1 week at home & then OTR with trainer for 6 weeks. Here we Go.

I'm 58 years old and drove for Schneider out of Memphis way back in 1988 when I was in my twenties, and I drove those horrible cabovers with the big blind spot on the right side. They wouldn't let me run out West, solo, and almost every load they gave me, I had to hand unload myself or hire a lumper to do it. All they ever gave me were short loads and boxes of toilet paper and tissue paper and many other things that weren't on pallets. I know KLLM has refer units, and of course, the tractors are much nicer now. My question is, do you have to unload any freight by hand? I'm approaching retirement and wanting to work for KLLM. I'm from Jackson, at their main terminal.
@bigsmoothtruckin11 ай бұрын
Wow, this is incredible. You've experienced a lot. To answer your question, no. We do NOT touch any of the freight ever. We'd throw a load lock on there, and that's about it. They always unload us, and if there's a lumper fee, they pay for it (if you're a company driver)

Alright, ALRIGHT. I'll consider KLLM lol Seriously though, I'm a dude that has done nothing related to trucking and am looking at getting into it as the most entry of entry level people. No permit, CDL, xp, nothing. You already answered quite a few of my questions but I have some more. 1. Holidays/vacation time? 2. Are all their trucks automatic? 3. I know you can have extras on a CDL, like doubles or hazmat. Any of those required? 4. How much of the work is no touch and/or hook and drop? Most of the companies I've seen advertising all no touch and high rates of hook and drop either require a few years of experience or have bad reputations. 5. Distance to and from work. I live in southcentral PA. Pittsburgh and Harrisburgh are each two hours away so I'm not very close to any place I'd imagine a company would have a terminal. Would they hire someone that lives that far away? I live in a location where bringing a semi-truck up is simply not viable, though there is a lot nearby (which I assume is automated since there is no guardhouse) where I see a lot of trucks, with and without trailers, parked that might be viable for leaving the vehicle for a couple days. I'm sure I have more but that's it for now. I know it's a lot to ask a random KZbinr about but I've read the comments sections and you seem to be really good at talking with prospective drivers and answering any questions they have and I imagine I wouldn't get too much, if any, half truths from you as compared to someone whose job is to talk possible drivers into joining up. Thanks for any and all help you give.
@bigsmoothtruckin Жыл бұрын
Wow, there's a lot to unpack, lol. So, here goes nothing. 1.) Holiday pay, yes, which ones, I'm not quite sure because I'm still new, but they do let most drivers off during Christmas, but I don't know if it's vacation time or not for it, but definitely extra pay of you worked it. 2.) Yes, all are automatic 3.) The only requirements are combinations, general knowledge, and airbreak, and for enforcements, you only need tankers (which is easy) 4.) Drop and hooks are completely random. If they say maybe 40/60 for me personally, others may be more or less. But 99% no touch freight. The most you'll have to do is put up a load lock, which takes a few seconds, which I showed in one of my videos. 5.) That's really dependent on your specific living situation. If you can bring just the truck home and not the trailer, that is an option (that's what I do), but I can't confirm entirely since I'm not familiar with your home area. I really hope this helps. Thanks for leaving a comment, bro🙏🏽

@@bigsmoothtruckin Well hot damn, I figured you'd reply but not in such a clean fashion. Thanks mate, this has helped a lot. I do want to keep looking but since I first saw this video, the thought keeps running through my head that I'm probably not gonna find a better starter job out there. Really, long as the company pays for my CDL and I can get 700-800 a week (at least for a while) I'd be a happy boy cause that'd be enough for me to keep up with bills and such and then if things didn't work out, I'd at least already have my CDL and a year or whatnot of experience to put towards the next job. Of course it'd be nice to start with a company and end up staying there for 30 years but that'd really mostly be a bonus. It is encouraging to see you have less a years XP and still be making 1,500ish every week The no touch part is also what I'm mostly hoping for. I wouldn't really mind sitting around for a while waiting as long as it wasn't nothing stupid like an entire day cause that's just silly. I mean, I got my little home away from home in the back so it's all good. I'm looking to quit my current job because I'm outside for 90% of the day (8 to 5/6/7) and while I make 1k a week, I'm just tired of working for 2 hours, walking 2,000 yards (my job involves walking between 3 to 7 miles a day in heavy vegetation) in 91 degree heat and feeling like I've worked for 10 hours and walked 20 miles. Hell, even when my work involves standing around for 5 minutes outside it feels like I'm dying. Ain't bad in winter or early spring but that's only half the year. So one of the biggest pros I see is not having to deal with that stuff nearly as much. Didn't mean to ramble but here we are lol Thanks again.
@bigsmoothtruckin Жыл бұрын
Hey, no problem, man, and I'm not a big texter, so I tried my best, haha. But as far as pay, if you work hard enough, you'll only see $600-$800 on your home time, lol. I'd say my minimum AFTER tax is $900, and that doesn't happen often. But as far as sitting, I'm the same way, as long as I get paid and can start driving, I don't mind sitting with the TV, game, bed, microwave, airfryer, refrigerator, and ac in the back haha. And the days you do sit, the rest of the week pays for it. I look at it like they said I have a day off, lol. And if you do wait too long for a load, they pay you for it. I'll likely go more in-depth on that when I make a video or go live. And yea, I've NEVER helped put stuff in the back. The most I've done was add that load lock, and I don't often have to do that. Oh, and the only time you HAVE to walk is bringing paperwork, going shower, or because you've been driving all day and WANT to walk, haha. Oh, and the final thing, I'll say, DEFINITELY do your research on all companies. KLLM seems like the best starter company for me and a lot of others, but I would for sure say check out other companies as well to make the best informed decision, I don't get paid to promote KLLM, I just genuinely see a lot of good with them for new and experienced drivers. (I also started not knowing anything about trucking, no permit, or anything) Good luck bro🙏🏽

@@bigsmoothtruckin That's the feeling I got. I couldn't imagine that the company was paying a trucker with a 500 subscriber youtube channel (not an insult by the way, small channels almost always feel more "real" to me so I trust them more lol) extra to promote them. And about texting, I write my comments on a computer so I got a proper full size keyboard and since I'm a gamer and a writer (non-publishable works), I know to use it well ha I'm also actually in the middle of watching some team drivers give their review of PAM and then gonna move onto Roehl and TransAM. I've also thought of a couple extra small questions. I knew I'd remember more XD 1. A classic. CB radios. Do they prove and/or allow you to have one? I wouldn't be using it to yap all the time but it'd feel weird to be a trucker and not have one lol 2. City driving. It'll happen sooner or later but I was kinda curious with how many times they ask for you to drive through things like suburbs or outer cities. Loads gotta go where the load needs to go but I'm mostly just curious. 3. The application process. Obviously, I live quite a bit from any of KLLMs offices. For my current job (which is four hours away), I did a phone interview. What does KLLM do?

Actually, you can stack up to 14 days off, so 7 weeks would be 14 days off, and $1,400 paid. If you worked 2 months straight (8 weeks) you'll get paid $1,400 for the 7 weeks you worked but you'd lose the 14 days off and only get the 2 days off because after the 7 weeks it restarts.

It's just life. But I prefer a company that at least stresses safety and "pretends" to care over a company that you can easily see that no one cares. From fast food, to trucking, to major corporations. If you aren't family, you're often looked at as another number.

@@randomlyentertaining8287 . I have heard that same "our drivers are our top priority" BS from Schneider, USA Truck, US Express and JB Hunt. USA Truck wanted me to learn from an older driver how to keep false logs to drive beyond the 10 hour limit. JB Hunt wanted me to turn in my tractor if I wanted to have more than 24 hours home time. Schneider was irate because I stopped after dozing off at the wheel and took a safety break. All they care about is making money. They may be adjusting their rhetoric now there is a driver shortage, but that line " no load is worth dying over" does not reflect the attitude of dispatchers. I finished my driving career hauling yachts and boats. Other than for boat shows, I was free to take my own sweet time delivering. My only criteria was to call ahead 24 hours for offloading. The yard dog isn't leaving the trailers high. Other drivers are responsible for that. The yard dog has a hydraulic 5th wheel that lifts trailers up and down. All the yard driver has to do is hook up airlines, pigtail and go. There's buttons inside the cab to raise and lower 5th wheel, and release the king pin. If drivers would lower the landing gear to about 2 inches off the ground and drop the airbags to lower it, you wouldn't have that problem.

Unfortunately, that is not always the case. I cant drop the airbag in my truck, same with all KLLM trucks so our trailer wouldnt be so high to where i would miss the whole kingpin. @achaosg Жыл бұрын
@@bigsmoothtruckin I have never seen that anywhere in my 8 years of driving or saw a switcher doing it intentionally. I was also a switcher for three years. The only time we get out to raise or lower the landing gear is because the fork lift operator inside the warehouse asked us to do it because their may be an issue with the dock plate and it leveling off in the trailer. Its a rare occurance and is usually done with containers. Last thing we wanna do is keep climbing out a truck to mess or crank the landing gear when you move 80 trailers or so a night on a 12hour shift with a big warehouse and yard and only 2 or 3 spotters working it and moving about the same amount of trailers. Ditch the conspiracy.
@bigsmoothtruckin Жыл бұрын
@achaosg2161 Well, maybe it's something these newer guys are doing. We were warned about it in school and I saw it myself. If/when I see it again I'll record it. Why would a driver do all that work just to raise it that high? I had to ask a yard dog to raise a trailer so I could lower the landing gear of a FULL trailer, no driver had access to it before me. I'm new to driving, I couldn't even think to make something like that up. I'm glad you never had to go through it.

Man I was looking into this company and was thinking about it but then I realized this is the company “Taemon Blair” was working for when he was killed in his truck ..and Karmeisha Thomas .. 2 black truckers under the age of 25 with very suspicious deaths that are both unsolved til this day . Be careful with them bro

I couldn't find who blair had worked for but that's sick. Thank you so much for sharing that bro🙏🏽I feel like they should have told us about this in school. Thank you for making me aware of this. Hopefully the company specifically had nothing to do with this, but I'm 100% keeping an eye out. And I always keep some kind of protection if you understand. Blessing to you bro, thank you again🙏🏽

i dont know why so many new drivers like OTR over local. Local trucking isn't bad and they accepts new drivers like OTR companies.
@bigsmoothtruckin Жыл бұрын
Yea I would like to be local in the future, I just personally like OTR because unless you have experience or your own truck, you make a lot more OTR from what I've seen in my area at least. But I'm always told the money will almost always be better OTR besides a few exceptions. Also you back up more locally, which is the easiest way for a trucker to hit something, so OTR gets you used to backing without doing it all the time. A lot of local companies also require at least a year + OTR before hiring you for local.

@@bigsmoothtruckin how much do get paid doing otr? A lot local companies are willing to take fresh CDL drivers regardless of the 1 yr requirements posted on the site. Most local drivers starting with 80k+

@@AndriaSmith-gp6ms food service like Sysco, us foods, Pfg, McLane etc... Or the driving program in LTL such as fedex freight, old Dominion, Estes, and xpo. These will take no exp or fresh out of trucking school. Both industries are paying 80k+
@bigsmoothtruckin Жыл бұрын
That's what's up. Those (from my knowledge) pay so much because it's touch freight (meaning unloading the truck yourself for those who are new) so they can pay 80k+ but that's great money! And I put a pay video out but it's 70k+ first year. 99% no touch freight. But if you're willing to do the work, local is definitely good money in those cases🙏🏽I want everyone to do proper research. I say how KLLM is good from my experience, but other companies are definitely great options!!
@bigsmoothtruckin Жыл бұрын
@AndriaSmith-gp6ms the money looks to be decent, but I've only driven for KLLM so I can't speak too much on other companies. Maybe I'll start to interview some drivers one of these days

get into trucking for the money? there's no money in trucking, divide your hours into the money. people get into trucking because they just have a love for big truck.
@bigsmoothtruckin Жыл бұрын
This comment makes no sense. What do you do? Do you know what the average two income households make? Truckers make more than most other jobs in America. You can love a truck all you want. Most people will not leave their families to be with a truck if they don't make money. FYI My hours into money puts me at about 28 dollars an hour (not including bonuses and paid home time) The median number Americans make is about 55k a year. And that's usually after some time working at a place. Most trucking jobs start at that or higher. 🙏🏽🙏🏽

@bigsmoothtruckin Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! You can have pets and family. I met a guy who's wife and son lives on the truck with him.🙏🏽

@bigsmoothtruckin alright cool. Thanks for quick response. Like most im sure..im a little weary (alot) weary about doing otr. We're in our 50s and never been apart very long.
@bigsmoothtruckin Жыл бұрын
Oh wow! I can definitely understand that. The pay might be different (less, likely) but I have heard of a company that trains 2 students at once (so 3 people on one truck) and if she don't like driving, she doesn't have to after yall pass but that way yall can learn in school together. I apologize for not being able to remember which company that was. But yea, at KLLM you can definitely have your wife tag along for the ride🙏🏽🙏🏽
