The new M1 Pro and M1 Max Macbook pros have been released and I KNEW it was time to switch. I have been using a Macbook air for a significant portion of my work as a Digital Artist/ Designer and it has been a huge help to my workflow. The only thing I needed to make the full switch was a little bit more power...

Well if you don't care about battery and power consumption, then any laptop with a dedicated GPU could give you similar if not superior performance depending on your activity and software. Don't sweat it, I'm afraid Josh is too excited with his new toy, which I understand, but it is still a laptop, not magic.

im an artist and gamer as well, and i got a macbook air recently, and it has made my pc pretty useless, because my pc is old and slow now (i literally only use it for gaming now, and even that is getting hard), and because of my travel plans in the future i have to upgrade to a laptop for gaming. i plan to have a beefy windows laptop for gaming, and my macbook air for carrying with me, as it weighs half as much the windows laptop i want. and using my ipad+apple pencil with my macbook while traveling just cannot be beaten.

I recently watched a lot of your videos to get a sense of what Art KZbin is like (thinking about joining the club), and recently you expressed that you felt inconsistent in your channel and that it was hurting you. I can't argue with analytics, but I never really felt the inconsistency. Your channel functions like a maven, pointing new artists to useful information, tutorials, ideas to consider, and tech (like in this video), and pitfalls to avoid. That can look like you're doing a dozen different types of content, but behind it all is one guy acting as a torchbearer to light up the path.

Funny thing is I’m not even an artist, I’m a musician/music producer but all of these points you brought up are still really relevant. I definitely want to get a MacBook Pro someday but its really hard to justify when I have a $2000-$3000k PC that slams through most tasks I throw at it. Definitely more justifiable for someone like you who’s time is more important. Your art is your source of income so any boost in productivity is worth it I’d imagine. Maybe if I ever get to a position like you I’ll pull the trigger and buy myself one! :)

Holly Molly, that thing is SMOOTH! and Streaming finally works with M1 directly when using a Fuji cam as a webcam. PLUS, the sound quality of that beast, stunning, especially while watching your video :-D super bass, super clear, crisp image... and last but not least, the design feels really nice in the hand. I only switched to Macbook 10 years ago because it was the "cool" thing to have when you're a designer and you show up at the office with one, it seemed to me like just a silly statement. But to this day I will sit back and remember spending entire weekends trying to clean a virus out of my PC, or it just freezing up (ctrl+alt+delete 100x a day), the random windows updates, the ports that just never worked, restore to previous restore point, finding device drivers?! It still baffles me that those problems completely disappeared. I assumed PCs are doing better now but it sounds to me like if I switched back I would be spending more time fixing things again. I'm going to wait until the power up the iMacs. I'm tired of trying to draw on a tablet and it pushes the keyboard and monitor so far away, and then staring down at the screen. And since everything is done from home these days, I would like a good built in webcam (laptops can't have decent webcams since the lid is so thin).

@estycki
@estycki Жыл бұрын
@@MrBlueberry33 You're right that you must compare price points, but I bought a Macbook Air in 2012, it was probably closer to $1000 in US dollars. I was using it up until this year. It was smooth sailing for 10 years with that little guy. I think the previous PC I was using I had purchased for CAD$500 at a Costco and had done minor upgrades to it, lasted me through university at least (4 years). Was it a cheapo PC, absolutely, but my "gamer" friends were laughing at me this year, claiming they could build me a powerful PC for $500 that would equal the operating power of my new mac studio, when that was not my experience at that price point. When I tried to get a quote from an IT colleague this year for a custom PC that would equal the operating power of the mac studio, it was around the same price (not including cost of his labour), and it would have been MASSIVE.

If money is no object, I completely agree that the Mac is a great platform. I still prefer to pay the Apple Tax for iPads as the drawing experience as well as the apps (Procreate and Art Studio Pro) are second to none. The PC is a great platform. It's cost effective and if you can build your own PC it's even better. Now, not everyone can do this, but with a PC you can easily extend its life it by adding a new, bigger SSD, storage, and memory. With an Apple laptop or an iMac expanding it can be difficult or impossible. With Apple laptops, expanding memory or the SSD is near impossible. Apple wants you to pay the Apple Tax, buy new products, and isn't consumer friendly.

Plus the one thing no-one seems to have mentioned. Repairs, you cannot do anything with the Macbooks if something fails. A PC can swap out components and screens as and when. With Apple you are at the mercy of "genius" bars.

The brush engine is excellent and i prefer the Art Studio brushes to Procreate. For sheer features Procreate is incredible. You can’t go wrong with either. I use both of them. If you do Manga or comics nothing beats iPad Clip Studio Pro. The downside is that it is subscription based at $24 US Dollars per year. It’s basically the desk top app and insanely powerful.

5:00 Well to be fair there is actually a setting in Windows where you can suspend updates for 35 days. Then every 35 days you can click the same option. Its a bit more work but at least when you know you are doing something important, like a project or portfolio piece(in my case) you can pause the updates so that doesn't happen.. You could literally make every 35 days your "update everything" day if you wanted to. Where you update windows, then all your drivers, etc.. (after video): Honestly, I'm never going to get an Apple product. They are way too limiting and take away control from the user. If something goes wrong its much more complicated to fix. Apple stores won't even fix them unless its something easy and even then they will charge a ridiculous amount (everything they do is to get you to just go and buy a new device.. they don't even make their computer plans public so that there aren't a whole lot of small shops out there that can reasonably fix the device. All most will do is replace a screen if it gets cracked). Not to mention this is the company that was caught rolling out updates to older devices to purposefully slow them down just so Apple users would feel the necessity of dishing out another large amount of cash just to get a faster device. You may be planning on keeping that laptop for 5 years but I guess we'll see what happens. At least with a PC you know the parts you are currently using will likely go down in price over time. So in a couple years you could replace one part with an identical part for not too bad of a price. By the time a repair may be necessary it may even be that you are able to upgrade for a reasonable price anyway. But add on top of that that you can't really game on them... honestly if you are going to get a laptop it shouldn't cost more than 2 grand anyway. I got an asus ROG for that price and have been able to game at least mid graphics settings at 60 fps, 3D model / render, use any art program without any problems and have been doing so for the last 5 years now. A 2 grand laptop now should be able to get you even better than that. (and keep in mind I am hesitant to recommend a laptop at all, portability is great but if you want the best bang for your buck its always going to be a computer tower.

@@katielaine28 That's because there is no real reason other than "because they like it" which is fine but don't lie and say there aren't better alternatives for less money. The interface is nearly identical anyway what could they possibly be talking about that magically made them more productive? Did they actually start finishing more projects faster? Surely nothing that requires graphics acceleration because I'm nearly guaranteed to be more productive than someone using a computer with no dedicated gpu considering some brushes and tools hardly work without it.

As a software developer almost everything I do on my mac is simple. I just install things and they work. They always work. The terminal is powerful and I don't have to worry about cmd or using powershell. Powershell always suggesting to visit a link for a new improved version of powershell and then have that one tell there's another one lol. Windows still has screens that looked like they shipped with windows 98. Spotlight search is something windows will apparently NEVER catch up on for some reason. There's no blue screen of death on my mac. They are ridiculously expensive but my experience with Apple products has been that if it breaks under warranty they will most likely give me a replacement. People only hate mac because of the price. It's the same thing with android. It's so annoying tbh. I could tune a cheap car and turn it into a race car that can wipe the floor with a Ferrari but maybe I just want a Ferrari. Lastly macs hold retail value so well!

A windows update has NEVER, ever erased all my work. People mention this all the time, and I just can't relate or even imagine how this would work. I have a Macbook pro 2019 for work and a Dell laptop for personal use and gaming. I honestly love them both. And with both, what they do well, they do exceptionally well, and what they do poorly, is akin to train-wrecks. Also, most of the things you mention not working on you PC seems to me as a motherboard issue which can be easy and fairly inexpensive to fix, good luck fixing your motherboard on your Macbook, let me know how many loans you have to take out to fix that. PS. you mentioned portability... is you Razor laptop not portable? It is a windows machine, is it not?
@EwanLim

I think it is definitely his motherboard. My experience with Mac and PC is that everything changed and starts to “just works” when I stopped using intel on both Mac and pc. Not sure why. I used to hate pc, switched to Mac and although it works better, things still doesn’t work sometimes but that is due to the “adobe experience”. When I got an AMD PC build and was like, “so this is what a PC is suppose to be like”. Everything just works and adobe products rarely does adobe things. I got the M1 MacBook and it was soooo much better, lesser things disconnecting compared to their intel boards and aside from ram memory leaks while using adobe products, adobe runs great (the arm versions). Still have to drop cash to get things to work though (stuff like loopback). It was at this point of time that I realized that I should never trust intel. At the end of the day, a PC and a Mac just works and people need to find out why. It could be as simple as a bad motherboard or intel.

@@mohammedalmamun7093 Less ports, an i5 at $1.5k, actually harder to get in and replace parts, a low-end GPU barely equal to the M1 Max at the top configuration, at a price several times higher what would get you a decent one, not EMR, etc. Why is it a better contender if it fails at almost everything a Windows PC stands for? When Apple is both the budget and the performance option that should tell you something. If you like the aesthetics or something specific of the build and money is not a problem however, then yes it could be an option, it just isn't competing against anything in any field IMO. If you don't need a powerful GPU something like a Galaxy Book Pro 360 will get you similar performance at way less price (to get the i7 Studio you need to go up to $2k, meanwhile you max out the Galaxy book at 1.5-6k or less with frequent sales, that's including other features like storage), including EMR digitizer and pen. You could actually combo a 360 and a Tab S or a Macbook Air and iPad Air at the same starting price as the Surface Studio, getting better processors in each case and two screen set ups everywhere, and that's an M1 included for the Apple combo and 2 pen for the Galaxy one! Plus the Alder lake versions of the Book should release early next year if waiting is an option. Microsoft chose not to bother (even if they were partnered with Intel to make Alder Lake and Windows 11 work, shows how much they pride their job there...) even tho they could've perfectly delay it a little bit more and just released a Tiger Lake product at the end of its lifetime, and the end of the 4-core era altogether (and again not at a competitive price on top of it...), and doubt they'll do a refresh any time soon. If you need a GPU then there's tons of other options to choose from, even if you need pen functionality. Say an Acer ConceptD7 Ezel which is kinda what the Surface Studio copied gets you a lot more actually "Pro" configurations at the same price, including beefier GPUs, EMR pen (don't get the ConcepD3 tho, that's AES, at that price point the Galaxy is much better), more ports, 4k screen, etc.

I migrated from a late 2013 12-core Mac Pro maxed out on memory (128 GB) and dual D700's to a Threadripper Pro workstation that has double the memory and better performing multicore and a Nvidia RTX 3090. I still use my Mac Pro for general purpose, remoting into work and Apple eco system stuff. The TRP workstation was purpose built and I'm thinking of installing Deep Freeze by Faronics to keep the system files clean from the junk Windows ends up accumulating that causes all the driver & system issues.

I have been using Mac's for the over a decade because my day job is a UI/UX designer and it's just what everyone uses. However I used to buil my own PC's. I have always found that Mac's suck with Wacom tablets they have always been laggy and just not as good as a windows machine. That includes a few years back when I was given a top spec G5 at work(the one that looked like a bin) that cost about £5k and it was tbh a complete waste of money. I have just been sent a brand new M1 chip MacBook about 2 weeks back which I've only actually turned on once to register and install stuff so haven't tried it out yet, I've heard they are good so maybe this will convince me. But people always seem to say Mac's are better but when you ask them what windows machine they were using they'll show you a £400 del, well of course the Mac is better it cost £2500! Saying all that I've not actually plugged in my Wacom tablet since I got an iPad pro last year.

I felt you are able to make the switch more easily because you also slowly use apple products like the Ipad for a long time, and maybe Iphone, to apple watch and the last component is the Mac. I suppose starting from scratch for an artist, which would the benefit most when starting? drawing from the Ipad and later get a Mac, or get a Mac and get the other apple products?

I currently use Windows and have used Windows for most of my life and the biggest reason that I would recommend anyone to use a Mac over Windows is because of the Operating system. Something like a 2 in 1 laptop or the 15 inch screen of Windows laptops tempt me a lot, but over the years I have had so much issues with Windows the operating system itself, I would readily choose a Mac without a thought. Apart from the forced updates, I have had updates which busted my laptop. I have had things that used to work normally (the wifi for eg. or even any design/editing software), malfunction (which led me to search the internet for hours to find a solution and then spend hours implementing it). I have also had horrible virus attacks which robbed me of so many of my precious data. When I buy a product I dont expect to have to do so much troubleshooting myself especially after updates that Windows forces on me, which in theory are supposed to make things better. From what I've heard that is the beauty of Macs. They just work.

It funny, because this is what I went through as I'm working and watching this: I was working on C4D and Maya, those past 5 days, because I wanted to get a project done for my school. I needed to make some MoGraphs for my website, and implement them using web flow. Also, export a model as an object, and then move it to Xcode or Unity, so I can work with it for another class. (I have a windows PC built by NZXT through the build service with 3 years of warranty) 128GB of Ram. Ryzen 7 (5000 something) with RX 6900 XT 4TB NVMe SSD (from Samsung) from the high end line they have (Pro line). Also another 4TB NVMe SSD for backup (in case something goes wrong). So the PC, is not bad (I have it for gaming mainly, but this time, I thought I might use it for work, because I can render faster with Maya and Arnold). Installed C4D, with RedShift to render, and Maya with Arnold, and it went just fine! Moved the files through (One Drive), and started working, everything went fine! it is 5:26AM, and I'm close to being done on a project I'm working on for 5 days, and then blue screen. I was like, okay, it's fine, things happen. I restart, and then went back and opened the project, the files are broken, and don't open anymore. Went to the cached files, to see if they saved at a good point, they didn't, they saved at a point kinda far. So I thought through the backup system (similar to MacOS), I can go back with stages, and get to the point before the blue screen. I managed to do it! (great!!!) praise the lord!, however the files are still broken... All of this, I didn't have to go through, all of this, I didn't need to do, all of this, wasn't supposed to happen at ALL, no matter how you spin it! I never had to face a such issue with MacBooks, and if I did, I can use time machine, and get all my files working. Yes, I need to wait an extra 15 minutes for my render to be done on Maya, because it is running through rossetta, but it will NOT CRASH! I have been using MacBooks long enough to know that wouldn't happen. And, Windows sucks for actual work. If you are using it as a hobby or for video games, it is great! But for actual work it sucks (period).

I kinda agree for most of the reasons, macs by so far has the best color calibration out of the box, and yeah, getting old is is a drag and loosing time to tinker and tweak your hardware. The windows update issue, I never had that where it wipes out my progress even without adjusting the update settings, not sure what happened to your settings or who messed up your PC or just aging hardware, nothing last forever. even macs get busted for hardware failure and VERY expensive repairs (I.e. Louis Rossman) But geek bench tho. . . not the best choice for benchmark and not a fair CPU to compare, a 2019 cpu vs a 2021 cpu, even the latest high end windows laptop can run circles around that CPU, the past 3 yrs really pushed CPU technology forward when AMD ryzen came to town. Tech hardware really never age well by any means and just degrades overtime.
