I love their design and manufacturing. Hate their sales and service operations. There are plenty of vintage Rolex watches out there. The great thing about Rolex having such conservative design sensibilities is that one of their watches from 30 or more years ago looks almost exactly like one they made yesterday. I do agree with one of the comments below about clickbait titles on KZbin like "Rolex Killer" or "Submariner" killer. After studying horology for over 25 years I agree 100% with this video. Like most watch enthusiast, I own both brands and am very happy wearing each. However, at the end of the day, Omega hands down offers more bang for the buck. Rolex watches are great, but they have become more of status symbol, and with that, comes double the price tag. Rewind back 15 years ago I would have said different as Omega offered mostly ETA based movements and Rolex offered their in-house 31XX series. In my opinion, the 31XX out performed the ETA based calibers and the 31XX was made with higher quality materials. With Omega's release of their in-house 8XXX / 99XX- (Chrono) movements it gave Rolex a run for their money in terms of performance, accuracy, and quality. Omega definitely offers more model variations, more choice of metals, more choice of complications, and you don't have to go on waiting list or be a "VIP" to purchase one. Not to mention, in most Omega models your now getting an in-house movement which is also a certified chronometer. Just my 2 cents. You as a collector/buyer must make your own determination.

A good overview of Omega over Rolex, I don't believe the quality of Omega is over Rolex. When you put the two side by side there is a clear quality build difference. Totally on the button with pricing though Rolex is an investment watch and people with more money than sense are keeping the Rolex prices high for paying way over the retail price, I do believe this is partly to blame with Rolex not selling their watches to people who genuinely want to own a Rolex and enjoy wearing it. Omega are currently discounting some of their range at AD's here in the UK but this is the AD's stock so they can offer discounts to move stock that is not selling. I don't see the point of Rolex AD's and boutique's when you can't buy one. All very frustrating but a good topic for discussion. I will be picking up a new Rolex with the 32xx movement and the “Chronergy” escapement in the next couple of months, and I plan on taking measurements once a week with a timegrapher, as I don’t fully trust Rolex’s new escapement design as of yet, with a decent number of reports of low amplitude over time, resulting in loss of accuracy. I suspect this may be down to issues of lubrication of the escapement, something that isn’t anywhere near as much of an issue with the coaxial design.

I agree. I took my Omega speedmaster Reduced to their Regent Street, London, boutique, a year or so ago simply to have the bracelet adjusted after a period of non-use. They set the watch up completely, provided an archive copy of the original sales info. (I'd bought it from a reputable auction w/o papers) and offered me a tea/coffee while I waited, as though I were a regular buying one of their most expensive models. Somehow, I don't think Rolex would have done the same (if they'd even let me in through the doors)!

Through judicious purchasing (waiting for sales, used market etc.) I have a decent watch collection, which includes 2 Omegas. A Speedy Racing, and a Railmaster. If I could afford a Rolex I'm not sure I would buy one. From what I understand they treat 99% of their clientele like S#1t. 7 years ago I bought a 57 speedmaster over a Rolex Datejust. Everyone told me I made a mistake and since then I have been absolutely thrilled with my decision. Not only did I spend half the amount, I got a more complex watch with the chronograph. Second, to this day, I’ve never seen anyone with the 57 speedmaster model that I purchased. It stands out amongst all the other cookie cutter Datejust and GMTs that everyone else has. Just this week, after three years of trying to get a Wimbledon or Daytona watch through Rolex, I was finally fed up. Kissing the ass (building a relationship) of salespeople across three different Rolex boutiques proved to be futile and I decided to purchase an IWC portugeiser chronograph. I now have two unique watches that I love for the same price of a Rolex that would never be sold to me. Rolex’ hubris in being the best watch manufacturer and manipulation of their demand should compel everyone to look at all the other competitors who provide better customization, warranties, and value.

What you count towards the pros, I would count as a BIG red flag 🚩 Omega just spread its catalog too thin! It’s much more difficult to define Omega’s 🧬 than it is for Rolex …. Rolex stayed the course and kept its catalog sleek and clean ….. Omegas catalog is kind of messy 😅😉

I cross shopped the AT and OP and choose the Rolex for mostly pragmatic reasons. It was less expensive, had better value retention, wore better, had a better bracelet with better clasp and fit system, longer warranty, and service interval. The technical spec advantages of the Omega were insignificant to me as I don’t work around enough magnetism to require 15k gauss protection (I own several vintage watches and have never had to de-magnetize any of them). The accuracy is basically the same and the longer power reserve on the Rolex gave it the edge for my purposes. I also happened to like the classic under-the-radar looks of the OP better…ironic since many criticize Rolex for being too blingy. Another irony is that I put myself on the list for the OP and the Shades AT, and got the call from Rolex first.

Appreciate the perspective and don’t disagree with everything you say. My first nice watch was an Omega Seamaster Pro 300 (the diver) - after doing a lot of back and forth between that and the Rolex Sub - around 20 years. I do think the points you make about the significantly more variety at Omega are both pros and cons. To me, the endless options at Omega somewhat cheapen the brand and make it come off more like a fashion brand rather than timeless horology. If you buy a submariner - Rolex may change the styling slightly - but in 20 years the design will still be similar. If you buy one of Omega’s designs - they may discontinue it and move in an entirely different direction. That can be a plus or a minus - you may end up with a very rare/unique piece. I buy watches with the intention to own them forever - so I don’t personally care - I believe you should buy what you like and will enjoy wearing. But Rolex is very consistent - so despite being hard to get at retail - you know that when you do - you have a very solid, consistent product. The Omegas you are taking some fashion risk. And not everyone who buys a high end watch wants to do that. They just want a nice, quality piece of metal that they can feel good about on their wrist. They don’t want to do a lot of research. Rolex is the safe choice for most people.

I was kind of torn between a Rolex GMT Master II and a Omega Planet Ocean GMT. I contacted Rolex via the website and ended up with a reply saying I had to contact an AD and they could arrange a meeting where basically they would interview me and if I was suitable I would be allowed to join the waiting list. I got bored with the whole thing and went to my local Omega store. I walked in bought the Omega, had the bracelet resized for me and walked out with a brand new shiny Omega Planet Ocean GMT and a bank balance that was a lot lighter.

@thetimeteller, these are great points. However, I think there's a fifth point here that many don't realize. Longevity and Heritage. Omega is the original king of production watches and not until after the Quartz crisis did Rolex become the market leader. Before that, Omega was the market share leader by a good margin. I believe this heritage over multiple centuries has granted them that design prowess and boldness that is sometimes overlooked by many. To me, it's not better because it's "same for less." Thank you for your insight. I stumbled across your video while studying on Omega as a possible next watch. Rolex has not and will not be on my radar because I have no patience for dog and pony shows like you called it. I have exactly one nice timepiece - it's a stainless IWC Pilot's Chronograph. It never leaves my wrist and I use the chronograph function routinely. I want a gold watch for formal and special occasions and I have it narrowed down to IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar, IWC Automatic 42, and Omega Speedmaster Moonphase. I was also thinking about an IWC Pilot's Chronograph in gold, but I don't want to duplicate the watch that I already have just for 'upgraded' case material. I think the perpetual calendar is one of the coolest set of complications ever. I like the simplicity of the Automatic 42. And I know I would use the heck out of the chronograph on the Omega and would likely wear it more often because of that. Do you have any suggestions among these three?

A couple of counterpoints: What good is a complication if you're not buying it. Omega having a tourbillon model won't influence your choice of dive watch. Availability wise, you can't walk into an AD and buy a new Rolex, but there are plenty previous models available at jewelry stores. And let's face it, most (neo-)vintage models outshine the newest variants. Omega releases a new limited edition every 5 seconds. Many of those are pretty much impossible to get as well. The MilGauss used to be resistant to 1,000 Gauss (hence the mil), but with the new hairspring it's resistant to 15,000 Gauss as well. The Ultra Deep (6,000m) only trounces the Deepsea (3,900m). Not the Deepsea Challenge (11,000m). Couple of things for Omega that you neglected to mention: Coaxial movements and exhibition casebacks.

On a rubber strap I'd consider one, but I have a DeepSea and like the way it looks and wears much better. It's all preference. I can't speak to Omega's sturdiness as I have never owned one, but I've owned a few Rolexes over the last 20 plus years and the two longest I've had went over ten years each before needing any service with minimal time loss. People complain other brands don't hold their value as a Rolex does. They don't love (nor know much about) watches imo. For those who think a watch is a mean for speculation, I have just one thing to say: buy some gold instead. I think your video intrigues me enought that I could see owning a vintage (or maybe a new) Omega, but Rolex will always seem like a boring watch brand to me. JMO.

I bought a ‘91 two-tone Sub five years ago and rarely ever wear it since it’s useless at nighttime and have a phobia about scratching it. I really enjoy wearing my Planet Ocean since it’s huge compared to the Sub, but still fits me nicely on my small wrist.

People who know watches will get an Omega. Those who don't, Rolex. Next up for me - Omega Speedmaster Racing, white face, white subdials.
