In California, another major gold source was old river channel gravels dating back to the Pliocene or earlier. These are accumulated along the eastern edge of the Great Valley. They were dredged leaving hills of washed cobbles behind. Around Folsom, they are known as Folsom Potatoes. Occasionally, really big nuggets are still found in the dredge tailings. The dredge system washed the fines down through screens where the heavy material was processed. The waste mud poured out behind the dredge. The cobbles were dumped on top of the mud to prevent the mud washing onto ag fields and into streams. Larger nuggets and specimen gold fragments could be too big to pass the screens and could be dumped along with the rest of the washed gravel.
