Thank You for your this video. It might not have been your intention, but I am convinced now, that quilts are not for me: to save a few ounces and dollars just to have to think about how to move in my sleep to avoid drafts - hmm no thank's. If it works for somebody else: fine. I like the idea of saving weight by including the sleeping pad more thoroughly into the sleeping system and I am musing about a sleeping bag with no filling on the bottom but a compartment to shove the sleeping-pad into instead. That would sacrifice the versatility of a quilt but make it draft-proof like a bag and save some weight. I don't know about someone making such a sleeping bag/pad system though. Will be a MYOG project I guess...

Great advice as usual! Thanks. I got into top quilts because of hammock camping, but definitely found on a recent trip I was pushing the limits of my sleep system for ground camping. Looking at the pad used, pad straps (have not used previously but will now) and other ways to deal with issues like drafts and condensation (e.g. layering a synthetic quilt over down for colder trips).

I am enamored of your gear! I make do with a vintage forest service firefighter, cool weather, synthetic sleeping bag used as a top quilt. I wish you had layaway. I want a coat, bag and sleeping quilt! Alas I fear will never own your stuff. kek. I will just make do with my vintage gear. Good to dream though.

Top quilts are a great way to go. I am 6' 4" and have a 54 inch chest. Most of the time I use a hammock, but can go on the ground. Will the new size of the quilt work for us bigger folks?

I’m a fan of Outdoor Vitals, but not necessarily quilts. I have struggled to get my UGQ Bandit 20F quilt with a Exped insulated pad (R 4.2) working for me at freezing temperatures. I’m more of a cold sleeper that flips side to side at night. The quilt sounded like a great solution for us side-sleepers. I’ve tried to seal the quilt to the edges of the pad but this leaves too much dead air to heat. I’ve tried to bring the edges of the quilt more under my body but discovered something that nobodies appears to talk about. The “cold sink” is at the line formed where the quilt and pad meet. I’m impacted mostly at the hip to knee area just above the foot box. The heat is NOT draining down through the pad but horizontally through the top surface or skin of the pad. The pad doesn’t insulate well laterally through the skin. I’ve given up trying to use the quilt for anything below 35F. The good news is I’m about to buy a Summit bag for the colder trips. Keep up the good work!

The middle baffles on my quilt are completely collapsed and empty after one trip and proper storage. 👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽 I’m going to try and fix it but it’s not usable at this point. 3 nights.

Question I didnt see answered is the "down vs sythetic". How does one decide this? Im in Oregon and doing majority of hiking on west coast. And is it better to get a quilt thats rated warmer than need. Like I will see at coldest 30 degrees. So a 30 would work but a 15 is really going to work. So is the 15 a better idea to have?

The 15F topquilt would be a great 3 season option. The Pad compresses down a little smaller than a nalgene bottle.

Hey It looks like someone emailed you back on Wednesday so you might want to double check that. Our sleeping bag ratings are closest to the middle "Lower Limit" rating also often referred to as the Men’s rating. Thus, a 15° rated bag will be comfortable for the average man at about 15° outside. A lot of factors can affect how warm a person is at night. For example body fat, clothing worn, your tent, your sleeping pad (don't overlook this; the pad is a critical part of your insulation), metabolism, humidity, how windy it is, how acclimated you are to cold weather, etc. External factors can make a big difference. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sH20qoKar82cg68

I’m super disappointed with my quilt. The baffles around my core and shoulders is barely full of down. After one trip and following their care instructions the middle baffles are completely clumped. I can shine my phone light right through it. I handled this thing with kid gloves.

Stoked on the new top quilts! Been using the 15° Stormloft down both on the ground, and in your hammock, 4 seasons for 2 years or so now. Paired with your regular rectangle insulated pad on the ground, I've gone down to 12° and been warm. I've chosen that quilt, and pad for my 83 mile "Hike for the Catskills" fundraiser that starts in 4 days. It's to show the importance of a "Ridge Runner " on our more popular trails.
