In the ever-evolving landscape of military technology, laser weapons have transitioned from speculative fiction to formidable reality. Watch four groundbreaking advancements in directed-energy technology, each marking a significant milestone in the future of defense.
On January 2023, Lockheed Martin unveiled their DEIMOS laser weapon system, achieving "first light" and signaling a crucial step towards operational deployment. This momentous development promises to integrate laser technology into Stryker combat vehicles, reshaping the capabilities of modern combat.
Decades of research culminated in a dramatic leap forward with the Tactical Airborne Laser Pod. This revolutionary technology, poised to enable combat planes to intercept and neutralize threats at the speed of light, underscores a new era in aerial defense, transforming the conventional approach to threat engagement.
In a unique twist on non-lethal weaponry, the PHASR (Personnel Halting and Stimulation Response) rifle emerged as a cutting-edge solution designed to temporarily incapacitate targets without inflicting permanent harm. Modeled after the concept of “setting phasers to stun,” this rifle represents a significant advancement in minimizing collateral damage while maintaining operational efficiency.
The Active Denial System represents a bold approach to non-lethal crowd control and perimeter security. By emitting a beam of concentrated energy to induce discomfort, this technology aims to protect military bases and manage crowds with minimal escalation. Despite its groundbreaking design, it has navigated its share of controversy and challenges, particularly following a critical incident in 2007.

Rule of thumb: Expect that the public release of information is older than what they say. That is, this information is what they were probably working on 10 years ago and what they have now is more advanced than what they want you to know.

I've had that thought with AGI. Like, if we have GPT5 about to be released trhis summer, & cooperations building multi-billion dollar computing data centers just for AI, then DARPA must have an AGI or something close. Sandboxed hopefully. The coming years will either be super awesome, or a decent in to anarchy. Woot.

Another rule of thumb: Don't believe that they are actually futher with their technology than they show us. It's meant to either make us think that the military is almost unbeatable, either they want to scare us with their crowd control weapons. Further more, the "downsides" they tell us about the common crowd control weapons, is just partially true. Most of those downsides are exaggerated.

There are quite a few KZbinrs that have put out some massive laser builds. Backyard scientist actually had to sign an NDA and cut out part of his video when he made his laser cannon. The optics he used were on par with what the government was using. In actuality laser physics is very easy. The hard part is learning how to coat all your mirrors correctly and having the money to purchase those reflective mirrors that can take the laser light at the right frequency so that they don't overheat. Government lasers are usually chemical lasers. They use a chemical reaction for the lasing medium. The reason they do this is because the power demand is a lot lower and your beam is legitimately on demand. Some of these chemicals are highly toxic. This is why a lot of civilians don't have the access to them, they cannot buy the underlying materials needed for lasing. Also beams affect organics and inorganics differently. The same nanometer beam that can burn a hole in a steel plate will not affect a biological sample as fast. This is why we have different nanometers for tattoo removal. The problem is that a lot of KZbinrs aren't working with the same technology the government is. You think they do but their power outputs are a fraction of what these lasers are.

I've built lasers sence '76 and now have a handheld NUBM37 diode aray that finally works perfectly....electronics aren't the issue, it's optics. Combining 26 parallel beams is more challenging than building the device! I have an optical bench and have done much experimentation to varying degrees of success, including a funnel prism utilizing the Total Internal Reflection principle. I'm under impressed with my results combining the beams. Could you be so kind as to share a little knowledge? Thank you, Doug Riech

This is very old tech, we had this back in 75. The main problem with conventional laser weapons it the time required to be on the target, this was solved prior to 1980. The only reason it was not deployed is the panic it would cause on the global scene. You can bet your bottom dollar that the US is not the only one to have this tech.

Why are we talking like this stuff hasn't been deployed. When it has, the US has energy weapons on naval ships, aircraft, and land vehicles, not to mention drones and satellites that have been deployed with an exception to hand held weapons. Which are in a late stage development. Also, energy weapons involving defensive shields and hand held and or tri-pod type weapons are in the mix. If you know how to research then you'll find the information I'm talking about.

A disadvantage of lasers as weapons is the need for the optics to be exquisitely clean because even a tiny bit of dust or hair on the optics will be heated to insane temperatures ruining the optics. Battlefields tend to be rather unclean environments. Thus I can see such a weapon being used offensively where everything is cleaned just before an attack but I can't see them being used defensively because of the need to be perfectly clean when used.

Would this work against a rocket polished to mirror specs? Would the beam be reflected away? How about using a proton beam?

Just before they mentioned it, I was gling to comment on my aunties ex husband who was a laser engineer. I remember him telling me back in the early 2000s that they had a separate power supply as at the time the power needed for what they were doing was insane. I remember him talking about diamonds and crystals and said that at 5% power, it would slice you in half. What they were working on, I don't know, but it was some serious stuff. Didn't Carson say that tech wise what the US, and probably others have hidden is at least 300 years ahead of of what we think we have now.

Couldn't you just cover all your tanks and planes with mirrors and it would just bounce the lasers off or even back at the weapon itself?

Sure enough. Powerful stuff. Took decades, but the tec is beyond anything most can imagine. Scary as hell, knowing anyone, anything, anytime, can be taken out. Much can be controlled by this and other technologies.

Use dedicated drones with mirrors to extend the laser range, one weak laser to keep mirror angles on drones set ahead of primary laser shot, extend the range and scope of each laser system....

You forgot about all the dead zones in the sea that were popping up that have stopped. Lazers do have an environmental impact. as well as environmental atmospheric heating.
