I have an original stock Chrysler stock bell housing. If you use a dummy input shaft or purchase a plastic one for clutch installation I get the clutch centered and bolted with the dummy shaft in place. After tightening the pressure plate make sure you can pull and push the dummy shaft in and out easily. After you tighten the pressure plate that won’t move at all. Of course don’t let the trans hang during installation. You can deform the bronze pilot bushing or bend the clutch plate. If you don’t have an extra driveshaft yoke to turn the trans during alignment you can put the trans in gear and rotate the trans a bit to align the splines. Once inside put the trans back in neutral. Just my thoughts but others have different ideas.

It never seems to fail those four speeds fight you that last quarter inch. The old timers would crucify me, but if it hangs up that last little bit I’ll start the bolts and use a very light touch with a wrench. Not to the point things start to get tight, but just a little pressure from the bolt is often times enough to get them to seat.

Yep, you’re exactly right. The splines are already engaged by that point.

This was painful to watch. Having done this many times I learned to use an extra input shaft to make sure the clutch disc is lined up correctly and tighten the pressure plate down. They sell plastic input shafts to align the disc. Once you tighten the pressure plate check that the input shaft goes in and out easily. Put the throw out bearing in the fork inside the bell housing. It will stay on after you clip it on I thought the trans jack would make it easier but MAN that was painful. Put your trans in gear with an extra drive shaft front yoke or use the drive shaft to turn the trans gear to line up the spline of the clutch disc. Or if you can rotate the trans or engine with a socket. I know people use those studs to align the top bolt holes but once you use them you can’t get the top bolts on first which prevents the transmission from angling down. If you have a trans jack they shouldn’t be necessary. Every attempt is a learning process. I can’t believe I used to do that under the car by pulling it up on my chest and pressing it in. Now I use a floor jack!

Very valid points, and if I had a yoke to install on the output shaft it would have been much easier as you said. Unfortunately I do not have one.

What bell housing are you using to make the combination work with the transmission?
