Yes, this not only makes since but is the best way to look at it. All of a sudden, the music makes since. And your brain is thinking about singing the notes, not what pattern should be. Pattern chasing without hearing the music is only confusing and takes away what we want to say with the instrument. Playing the notes we want to hear is the whole point. Freeing our brains to do that is why this works for me. Thanks Steve.

The word "mode" means application, and that is what you have just described, not the emphasis on the starting note or position on the fretboard but how the notes relate to the background chords. This is what I first understood modes to be when I started learning about them. Then I "got lost in the weeds" as you put it, thanks for pulling me out. Great video.

You have made this incredibly clear. Modes are scales within scales, beginning on different notes of the primary scale. Emphasis on the root notes of each mode changes the sound of the scale. Thanks! I first heard Miles Davis talk about modes and I as totally lost.

This video and the previous one made so many connections for me, I had been improvising over a C Lydian backing track using E minor pentatonic and was trying to work out the relationship so that I could use it for other keys, this makes it very clear that C Lydian being the 4th mode of G major would also be the same as the relative minor of G which was of course E, hence it all worked so well, and as you explain here, it then becomes a simple atter of hearing the music and emphasising in the most musical manner the correct notes to fit the sound. Such an excellent video that trully unlocks the understanding of the modes in a way that allows us to be more comfortable with the modal universe.

I am beginning to understand your explanation of 'modes'. I have been 'sitting down in the 'weeds' never mind lost in them. After your tutorial, I am now at eye-level, and hopefully, with more practise, I will be standing and then out of the weeds. You are right. I am sure we overthink and confuse ourselves trying to see what is not there. Steve, thank you...keep up the great work.

Hi. Thanks for commenting. Glad to know the lesson was helpful. Sometimes modes can be a bit confusing but all they really are is the same notes of a parent scale starting from different degrees/notes. People many times tend to over complicate things that are really much easier than what they seem. Feel free to ask any questions if you need to and I'll be happy to clarify. Thanks again for your comment!

mind blown. thank you I've been playin for so long and this explanation is the best iv ever heard in my life. thank you for this. lessons. ive been goin crazy on memorizing modal shapes, making a mode in a major key I thought I made a new mode, but still its just the major mode. you explained it very clear. i don have to worry moving away just to make a mode. the mode is the backing chord emphasis not my notes because its just major notes.

Of course I understand this video is for the purpose of getting to know and use MODES. For this matter D Mixolydian is just the fifth chord in key of G Major and G Lydian is the fourth chord in the key of D Major. So that when we play G Major pentatonic is going to sound well when accentuating the D notes from it over D Mixolydian and D Major pentatonic is going to sound well over the G Lydian as long as we put the emphasis on the G notes from it✌🏼🙌🏼 😀 Thank you Steve🎸

I've got pretty consistent ADHD, and you, Steve, keep me focused like few other folks or things seem to be able to do. Ergo, I'm finally really learning this massive mess of data to the point of being able to actually apply it. I assumed you were from California or someplace like that, then you mentioned that you're from the Midwest, like me......Just helps me enjoy your lessons even more, which seems to help me learn even more. Thanx, again.

I’m still in the weeds. I’ve been playing since I was 15, and I am 62! Having been raised a trumpet player, I understand notation like another language. To be honest I’m a lefty who plays right handed, and I have used that excuse to focus on technique, and very seriously the past 15 years. I’m going to learn theory this year 2022, and I am still getting an overview of who I understand it better with, if that makes sense. Thanks, I will keep watching.

This lesson has helped so much! I thought I had to learn a ton of different scales. You are the first one that explained that it is merely an emphasis. Now I have a totally new way of looking at it. I just need to buckle down more of knowing the fretboard at a glance instead of taking a second or two to find what note I'm looking for. You Rock Dude!!!

So just to test this theory or lesson....I pulled up a chord progression on youtube in B minor....which according to this lesson is D or D major. So instead of playing the minor pentatonic scale in B....I played the major scale in the D position and Wa fucking La.....OMG. Then I changed my root note fr on D to E then kept on going up. All I can say is WOW! I THEN SHIFTED FROM THE PENTATONIC SCALE IN B TO THE MAJOR SCALE IN D. This definitely opens up the dimensional spectrum for a player or at least me. I know Steve Stevens does this among others but how doI wish SOMEONE would have explained this to me so many years ago. Do not give up on modes ladies and gentleman.....it's so much fun to add them to chord progressions. Thank you Steve! I just need to memorize all the patterns for the major scale which will teach me the seven other modes automatically!

This was really very helpful. I'm just starting to learn how to play, and I have an intense need to learn the fundamentals of what I'm doing. Playing a chord without understanding what a chord is is very confusing to me. So I'm cranking down on scales and positions first and foremost. Then I'll go on to chord progressions and meandering, and only then will I go to modes. But all your videos on music theory and its practical applications have been invaluable to me, and you are largely responsible for getting me to finally learn music and pick up a guitar, something I've been avoiding for decades. Hopefully I'll be able to jam with my old man (he plays the banjo and sings in a choir) soon enough.
