A few months ago you taught me the notes on the fretboard. Then you taught me to meander, then you taught me the Pentatonic shapes 1 through 5, and then you taught me about how you can play in nearly any key as long as you accentuate the root notes to stay melodic. And now because of you I can look at my fretboard and go okay he wants me to play C on the E string, I memorized that for Steve months ago, then D, then down a string to E, F or F# G, and then slide to A. And i can see that on the neck as you tell me to do it. I still can't do hammer on pull off riffs at blinding speed like you but i've unlocked the whole fretboard because of your teachings and my will to practice.

Yes once you figure out the fret board alphabet it's such an amazing feeling i had to comment to say keep at it man if you can keep up with steve on a scale like that you have potential to exceed the sky us the limit.

This video was just what I needed to move my playing and my understanding forward. I’ve tried to learn scales, modes etc. over the last few years but this has made so much sense of something that I just couldn’t tie together until now. I’m now starting to really see the fretboard, my playing sounds better already. Many thanks Steve.

@SketchEtcher
@SketchEtcher 3 жыл бұрын
The CAGED way of learning arpeggios really puts me off. I get the concept, but memorizing the arpeggios everywhere seems to be taking things too far-at least for a beginner or intermediate player. Finding the arpeggios within the major scale is much more fun, and probably musically relevant, way to learn them.
@tomercohen3701
@tomercohen3701 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve, great concept of keeping the arrpegio compact and simple. What can also be very halpful (at least for me) is to see you improvising with this concept over a jam track with 3-4 chords, without sounding too mechanical

When you started showing how to connect the triads, my ears grabbed onto something familiar, and I jumped awake. Wow thanks for this Steve... hugely helpful. My brain always defaults to 1/4, 1/3, 1/3, 1/3, 1/4, 1/4 pentatonic shape and it hasn't been easy to break free from that rut. Thanks!
@SketchEtcher
@SketchEtcher 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t really understand why the Pentatonic scale is so popular or why it was created except for ease of use. I find the major scale by far more melodic. The sound of the half steps is awesome, as hopefully this video has proven. Maybe I shouldn’t hate on the pentatonic but I learned it when I was 16, and never once was inspired to go anywhere with it. Every guitar melody that I found really intrigued me always seemed to be using the Major scale. Maybe it’s because I love pop punk so much, which is very Major (I,IV,V) and rarely Minor or blues-like.

He cares too much about what people think of him, apparently, but if it were me I'd take pride in my State and say "ruut" all damn day long, lol. He's great, tho.

Super cool lesson. Lots of useful suggestions... broken down really clearly. Loved the melodic example of the higher octave string pair.. as some other commenter says it'd be great for a performance from you over a backing track showcasing the techniques you have demonstrated.
